Generator CO2 firefighting system

1. System description
CO2 agent cylinders
System structure

Unit independent system: 1 protection areas is protected with one CO2 firefighting system.

Combined distribution system: 2 protection areas are protected with only one CO2 firefighting
system.
Combined distribution system
Unit independent system
2 Main components of agent cylinder,
actuating cylinder and pipeline system

The Unit independent CO2 firefighting system is applied in Zungeru hydropower plant .

This system mainly consists of agent cylinder (including head valve, weighing device),
actuating cylinder (including head valve with solenoid valve), check valve, pressure switch,
rack, nozzles and pipelines, etc.
2.1 Agent Cylinder

The agent cylinder is used for storing the extinguishing agent.

Once fire occurs, the actuating gas will open the agent cylinder
head valve, and then the fire extinguishing agent is released to
the protection area through the siphon, head valve and selector
valve for fire extinguishing.

Each generator CO2 fire extinguishing system has 37 initial

agent release and 24 extended agent release.
2.2 Head Valve of agent cylinder (ERF12/15)

The head valve is installed on the agent storage cylinder

for sealing agent. When a fire occurs, the actuation gas
opens the head valve to release the agent and extinguish
the fire.

Nominal capacity 4.0 L
Design pressure 15.0 MPa
2.3 Actuating cylinder H 390 mm
Φd 140 mm
The actuating cylinders is used for storing actuating
gas. The actuating gas is N2, and its refilling pressure
is 6.0 MPa. When fire occurred, the solenoid valves of
actuating cylinders is opened to release actuating gas.
The actuating gas opens relative selector valves and
head valves of agent cylinders via actuating pipe to
release agent for extinguishing.

Each generator CO2 fire extinguishing system has one

(1) initial actuating cylinders and one (1) extended
actuating cylinders.
2.4 Solenoid head valve (Head valve of Safety pin
actuating cylinder) HRF/6.6

The head valve installed on the actuating cylinder is used to

seal the actuating gas. In case of fire, the extinguishing
control panel will send out a fire-fighting command to drive
the solenoid valve to open the actuating cylinder head valve Locking device
to release the actuating gas. The actuating gas opens the
agent cylinder head valve and corresponding selection valve
through the actuating pipeline to release the agent and
extinguish the fire.

2.4 Solenoid head valve (Head valve of
actuating cylinder) HRF/6.6
The head valve of the actuating cylinder set has two opening
modes: electrical starting and mechanical manual starting.

In electrical starting, the valve opens under the command

from the agent release control panel; the solenoid acts to
open the valve of the actuating cylinder set.

In mechanical manual starting mode, the handle is turned

upward to open the valve of the actuating cylinder set. The
safety pin should be pulled out before the manual starting,
otherwise, mechanical manual operation will not be possible.

2.5 CO2 Agent Flow Check valve (HYD12/17.2)

The check valve is installed between the discharge head

pipe and flexible metal hose for controlling the flow
direction of the agent.

The HDG0.5/8 back pressure valve is installed in actuating

pipe. If the actuating cylinder head valve leaked slightly (the
pressure of actuating pipe is no more than 0.1 MPa), the
leaked gas can discharge from the back pressure valve to
atmosphere. It is used to avoid false actuation caused by
leakage.

2.8 Pressure Switch/signal feedback
device (XF0.8/17.2)

The pressure switch/signal feedback device is

installed on the outlet pipe assemblies of the CO2
system. When there is fire extinguishing agent
flowing in the pipeline, the pressure switch acts and
sends a feedback signal to the extinguishing control
panel, indicating that the agent cylinder head valve
has been opened and the fire extinguishing agent has
been discharged to the protection area.

of protecting the system.

2.10 Weighing device and leakage alarm
device

A weighing device is installed on each gas cylinder to

weigh the agent cylinder. The output signal of the
weighing device is sent to the leakage alarm unit type
BX-1. When the weight of an agent cylinder is lower
than 90% of the rated value, the leakage alarm unit
sends out a weight loss alarm.

3.4 Agent release control panel

An RP-1002PLUS firefighting control panel is installed

at the outside of each generator pit. After receiving the
fire alarm control signal from NSF2-3030 fire alarm
control panel, the RP-1002PLUS will control the release
of CO2 cylinders.
4 Other components

4.1 SSL24-6 Alarm bell

One SSL24-6 alarm bell is installed at the gate of each

generator pit. When the fire occurs, the alarm bell will act.
3.6 P900 Horn/Strobes

One P900 audible and visual alarm is installed on the top of the
entrance door of each generator pit. The alarm operates when the
generator catches fire.
3.7 Agent released indicator
One FS.C type agent released indicator is installed on the top of
the entrance door of each generator pit. When the generator is in
fire, and the CO2 firefighting system released, this indicator will
light to prompt all personnel not to enter the generator pit.
3.8 Pressure relief device

When the total submerged gas fire extinguishing system is in process of

extinguishing fire, because of the fire extinguishing gas agent, the gas
pressure in the protection area will increase.

A pressure relief device (model ZXYWN10-10) is installed on the wall of each

generator pit of Zungeru Hydro Power Plant and is closed normally. In case
of fire, the fire extinguishing system releases fire extinguishing agent and
the gas pressure in the pit will increase. When the gas pressure in the pit
reaches the set value (1000 ± 100 Pa), the pressure relief device opens.
When the gas pressure decreases, the pressure relief device is closed, so
as to maintain a certain concentration of fire extinguishing agent in the fire
extinguishing area, and control the pressure in the foundation pit will not be
too high.
4 Operation

4.1 Operation mode: 2. Manual start

✓ Electrical manual out the fire automatically, the persons at site can
use the electrical manual mode to start the fire
✓ Emergency mechanical manual extinguishing system.

4.2 Automatic start
Function of the control panel under auto mode:

✓ The generator pit door is closed.

✓ Temperature detector actions.
✓ Smoke detector actions.
✓ Generator differential protection element actions.

 Monitor the fire alarm status and light the

corresponding indicator on the panel. Ring the
buzzer.

 When detecting protection area alarms, the alarm

will be activated.
 When detecting protection alarms, the delay starts.
The screen shows the delay countdown and the
delay indicator lights.

 When the delay time's up, the actuating cylinder and

CO2 cylinder valve will be activated.

 During the delay, the urgent stop button can stop

the delay and all the output. If there is any manual
start signal, the manual start process can be
restarted.
4.3 Electric-manual start

The input of the manual start signal has the starting priority,
which means when the system receives a input of manual start
signal, no matter what circumstances the system is under, it will
enter the delay spraying state:

 Light the manual start indicator and keep it locked until the
reset of the controller or there comes a manual stop input.

 There will be an alarm when starting the buzzer and the buzzer
can be muffled.
 Start the acoustic-optic alarm system and it can be stop or start
alone. During the delay, you can manually stop all the output;
control output 1, selector value. Light the corresponding
indicator.

 When it enters the delay state, the delay indicator lights.

 After the delay, light the start spraying indicator and keep it
locked until the reset of the controller. Start the control output 2、
bottle value and light the corresponding indicator.

 Wait for the gas spraying feedback signal. When receiving the
feedback signal, light the gas spraying indicator and the buzzer
makes a sound of spraying.
4.4 Manual stop

During the gas spraying delay, when the input is When the system has entered the gas
“manually stopped”: spraying status, the buzzer makes a sound
of spraying, all the output can not be
stopped by manual stop, which means that
 Light the manual stop indicator until the reset the manual stop only effects before or
of the controller or there comes a manual start during the delay.
