London Underground corporate identity - Desktop publishing standards

The use of desktop publishing offers a freedom of style for the individual.
However, the existence of variety in both style and quality of presentation

4
is detrimental in maintaining a clear, cohesive and consistent company
image.

With over million passengers every day,

Transport for London runs one of the busiest and
most complex transportation systems in the world.
This document sets mandatory desktop publishing and presentation
standards for London Underground (LU). Its purpose is to achieve high
quality and consistency in the material produced by this means. This will
help to project the image of an efficient, professional, well-run
organisation.

Basic elements

Introduction
This section gives guidance on the basic
elements that make up the LU Desktop
publishing standards. The information covered
includes the use of the corporate typeface,
roundels and logotypes.

Roundel

This page shows the LU roundel.

For detailed guidance on the correct use
of the roundel and for master references,
refer to the LU Basic elements standards.
To ensure clarity and impact when producing a
roundel, no other graphic elements should be
placed within an area equivalent to 0.25 its
width (x) all around it. This exclusion zone is
indicated here by the dotted box around the
grey roundel.

Presentation style

Introduction
The presentation style of all documents
produced for LU or its operating units should be
in keeping with the basic criteria for written
communication described earlier in this
document.
The style therefore should be clear and the
English simple, direct and open.
Designs should be clean and straightforward.
Avoid unnecessary decoration or fashionable
elements that may trivialise LU’s
communications.
Typographic layout and graphic elements
should always aid clear communication to the
reader. Never present information in ways that
may seem visually attractive but overwhelm or
obscure the message or data to be conveyed.
Historically, the networks that are managed by
LU have had a good reputation for design
excellence and thorough and consistent provision
of travel information.
This tradition should be carried forward to the
same high standard on all publications produced
by LU.

Photography and illustration

Documents can be enriched with photographs

or illustrations. Illustrations can be created
using a drawing programme or scanned into the
document along with photographs.
To achieve clean reproduction of scanned
images, it is best to use a scanning resolution
of no less than 300 dpi at reproduction size.
The precise screen value will depend on individual
images and the process and paper stock used. As
a general guide, the higher the resolution, the
better the definition. For this reason, halftone
images should be output at higher resolution to
overcome their slightly ragged effect.
Once scanned in, images can be enlarged,
reduced or cropped as appropriate. Wherever
possible, images should be sized and positioned
to fit the layout grid used for the document.
Consider the appearance of whole pages or
spreads when sizing and positioning images.
If an image needs to bleed off the edge of the
page on one or more sides, remember to
allow an additional 5mm of image beyond the
edge of the page on each side that bleeds.
This will compensate for any movement of the
paper or the trimmer during production.
London Underground corporate identity - Desktop publishing standards 3.9

Usually, images will be rectangular with clearly

defined edges, but cut-outs may also be used.
Take care not to attempt cut-outs of very
complex images where it will be difficult to
produce clean edges and a well defined shape.
Be careful also of images with irregular
backgrounds where lighter edges may be lost
against the background. A keyline box around
such an image may help to define it more
clearly, but the thickness of such a keyline
should be no more than 0.25mm.
If an item is to be printed professionally, it
may be better to use the desktop publication
as a layout rather than an artwork. The printer
can then follow this layout and scan your
supplied images to a professional standard.
London Underground corporate identity - Desktop publishing standards 4

Layouts
The layouts that follow illustrate a range of
material produced by desktop publishing.
Items, such as letterheads, illustrate the use of
an overprinting template on a pre-printed sheet.
Other examples show layouts designed
entirely on PCs. Some of these like fax sheets
and memos, are based on standard templates
that should be followed exactly.
The bulletin and newsletter examples are
recommended designs that should be followed
in principle, but which are adaptable as each
edition needs to appear fresh and interesting,
rather than exactly the same as its predecessor.
In these cases, fixed elements such as the
masthead should be presented consistently,
while the editorial part needs to be more
flexible in its layout.
