Important notes before you start…

- Creating the leaf veins is done by crocheting into the front or back loops
as the pattern requires. Pay close attention to these instructions as they vary
between front, back and both loops.

- Why all white thread?

Although this pattern can be made using any yarn or
thread, I recommend you crochet in all white 100%
cotton thread. This will allow you to dye the leaf
after it is finished.
Painting your crochet items using fabric dye can
open exciting new possibilities…

- Where is the first stitch?

At the end of each row the work is turned over.
After the turn, it is very easy to miss the first stitch,
especially when working with thread.
In most cases after the turn, the pattern will ask for
a ch 1.
Pull your hook slightly to the back to reveal the first
stitch at the base of your chain stitch.
REMEMBER, the first stitch to work into is the last
stitch from the previous row.

How to color your leaves

Blocking

After finishing the leaf, it will have to be straightened

out before coloring. Get your leaf slightly wet, stretch
the leaf ends and adjust every leaf point. Leave it to dry
on a flat surface, no need to stretch using pins or nails.

Preparing paint

Prepare small containers for the different paint shades you will need. Sprinkle only few grains of dye at a time, into
warm water and mix until the right shade is achieved. Test the color on a paper towel or a white cotton fabric.
I recommend preparing two shades for each color, one very light and the other a bit darker.

Coloring

I use pictures of autumn leaves as reference; there

are so many possibilities for color combinations!

I recommend you immerse the whole leaf in a very

light shade of yellow as the first layer of paint. This
stage can also be used for the blocking of the leaf.

You can start coloring while the leaf is still wet - This
way the dye will spread and defuse significantly more
than if you apply it to a dry thread. Use this to achieve
smooth color transitions and ombre effect Vs hard
clear lines and clear borders when coloring to a dry
thread.

Start applying the dye with a small paint brush, using light
shades. More coats of the same shade will make a subtle
difference. For a more contrasted color transition apply a
coat of a darker shade…

Don't expect the coloring of the leaf to be quick.. 

It may take several coats of paint, with some waiting to
do in between for the leaf to dry.
