Since there was difficulty in purchasing of foreign supercomputers

(For academic and weather forecasting purpose). So Government of

India had planned to create their own super computing systems.

· In Indian Government had requested to purchase a Cray X-MP

supercomputer from US.

· Since the machine could have a dual use in weapons development

apart from academic and weather forecasting use. The request was
denied by the United States government.

· After this, the Government of India decided to promote an

indigenous supercomputer development programme.

· Multiple projects were initiated from different groups including :

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing -C-DAC:

Mission-1: PARAM (GFLOPs range)

Mission-2 : PARAM 8000 (100 GFLOPS range )

Mission-3 : PARAM Padma (TerraFLOPS range)

The Centre for Development of Telematics -C-DOT

· C-DOT created “CHIPPS” which means,The C-DOT HIgh-
Performance Parallel Processing System.

The National Aerospace Laboratories — NAL

· Flosolver project (The Flosolver MK1)

· A parallel processing system

· For computational fluid dynamics and aerospace engineering.

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre-BARC

Anupam series

The 12th Five Year Plan of GOI (2012–2017).

· 2.5 billion USD Funding by Indian govt. to supercomputing

research during the 12th Five-Year Plan period

· The project was handled by: Indian Institute of Science (IISc),

Bangalore, to develop a supercomputer with processing power in the
exaflops range.

The Advanced Numerical Research and Analysis Group- ANURAG

PACE series
National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) (2015–2022) [C-
DAC & Indian Institute of Science ]

· In 2015 the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology

announced a “ to install 73 indigenous supercomputers throughout
the country by 2022.

· This is a seven-year program worth $730 million (Rs. 4,500

crore).

· Earlier super computer were assembled in India, the NSM aims to

produce the components within the country.

NSM and National Knowledge Network” (NKN).

· The purpose of NSM is to create a cluster of geographically-

distributed high-performance computing centers linked over a
high-speed network, connecting various academic and research
institutions across India.

· The mission involves both capacity and capability machines and

includes standing up three petascale supercomputers.

Phase-1: The deployment of supercomputers having 60% Indian

components.

Phase-2: To have an Indian designed processor, with a completion

date of April 2021.
Phase-3 and final phase: To deploy fully indigenous
supercomputers, with an aimed speed of 45 petaFLOPS within the
NKN
