Ab Wado mi Ui Ari
(Big Fish and Orphans)
Long time ago in a river near the village of Jirtag, there lived a large fish. When
people go to the market and cross the river, the fish always curse at them. Until one day
people in the village of Jirtag conspired to kill the fish. They prepared arrow, (umat klubut)
and also a spear to kill the fish. When they arrived near the river, some people hid behind
bushes, and some climbed trees. One of them shouted to call the fish "Opo Char-chari,
apang mi netaring" which means if you dare show your face to us. But the fish responded by
invoking "Otou Supach" (invoked men). The person kept calling the fish "Opo Char-chari si
apang mi ne taring" but the fish continued to reply with invective. He then arched into the
river and called the fish with the same greeting. This time he managed to summon the fish.
When the fish appeared, they immediately arched and speared the fish. Everything was right
on target and the fish died. They then cut the fish and took it to the village of Jirtag to hold a
big party. All villagers were invited, except for three orphans who lived in the village. At
night when people are partying, the three children just sleep at home. That night the eldest
son dreamed that a grandfather had come to their house and told them that their village
would soon sink because they had killed the Big fish in the river and ate it. But because the
three of them did not eat the fish, they will survive. But they have to take stove stones from the
kitchen to carry. when the water had filled the village they had to throw the stone into a
puddle if the stone sounded slowly it was a sign that the water was deep so they could not
follow the direction but when the sound of the puddle was large it was shallow so they had to
follow that direction to Bukit. But when they have survived, do they never look back to their
village. The eldest was surprised and flew out of bed. When he wanted to tell the dream to his
brothers, there came a grandfather and told them to do the same thing as the eldest dreamed,
then the grandfather disappeared.

When people were partying came a grandfather with very much wine. He then offered
people to drink the wine until they were all drunk. He stuck a stick in the ground and told
people to pull it out but no one was able to pull out the stick. The grandfather then pulled out
the stick so that the water came out from the stick hole, the longer it grew bigger the more
floods occurred that sank the village. The three children then took the stove from their
kitchen and threw it into a puddle of water; The first sound is so small that the pool is still
deep. they threw away the second stone but it was still small. On the third throw the sound of
the puddle is large which indicates that the water genagan is shallow. They then followed the
direction of the third to the top of the hill. Their youngest brother was so tired that his eldest
brother carried the youngest up the hill. There, they were very curious about their village so
they saw the village again. When he saw the village, the eldest and the youngest turned into a
rock that was holding, while the other turned into an eucalyptus tree. According to the story
that I heard, up to now the eucalyptus trees and rock slinging are still there, and if the wood
is cut or the stone is broken it will bleed.
