READING COMPREHENSION

Read the text and answer the questions.

I. Places with higher English proficiency are fairer and more open

There is an increasingly clear relationship between a society’s

connectedness to the world, its level of equality and freedom, and its
level of English. The simplest relationship to explain is between a
country’s level of outward focus and its English. It is a
virtuous cycle. Places that engage heavily with the world (economically,
scientifically, diplomatically, etc.) need English, so English becomes a
priority. And through their engagement with the world, adults have more
exposure to English, which in turn raises proficiency.

The more complex relationship is between English and fairness, and yet
we find strong and consistent correlations between English and gender
equality, social mobility, and freedom. Inequality appears to dampen
English proficiency, perhaps by leaving a portion of the population
behind when it comes to English learning opportunities.

1) Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word

“connectedness” in line 1?
Connectivity, relatedness, and association.

2) According to the passage, what would happen if there is inequality

in English?
If there is inequality in English, it may result in unequal access to
education, employment, and other opportunities for certain groups
of people who do not have equal proficiency in the language. This
could also lead to language discrimination, prejudice, and
marginalization of non-native English speakers. In turn, this can
negatively affect the overall social, economic, and political stability
of a society.

3) Mention the main points?

On the places that engage heavily with the world (economically,

scientifically, diplomatically, etc.) always need English, so that’s
why English becomes a priority. And through their engagement
with the world, adults have more exposure to English, which in turn
raises proficiency.

Part 2
Choose the correct answers to complete the following short
passage.

Erosion of America’s farmland by wind and water has been a problem

since settlers first put the prairies and grasslands under the plow in the
nineteenth century. By the 1930s, more than 282 million acres of
farmland were damaged by erosion. After 40 years of conservation
efforts, soil erosion has accelerated due to new demands placed on the
land by heavy crop production. In the years ahead, soil erosion and the
pollution problems it causes are likely to replace petroleum scarcity as
the nation’s most critical natural resource problem.

1. As we understand from the reading, today, soil erosion in America —-.

America since the 19th century and despite 40 years of conservation
efforts, it has accelerated due to increased demands for crop production.
The author predicts that soil erosion and the pollution it causes will
become the nation's most critical natural resource problem, replacing
petroleum scarcity.

III. WRITING
• Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

“When people succeed, it is because of hard work. Luck has nothing to do

with success.”

I disagree because on the one hand, In the developed world, people tend to race
to meet social norms and living expenses in order to gain better lifestyles.
Additionally, ambitious person who gives priority to hectic works is prone to
easily raise their wages and climb the ladder of success in their profession,
leading to acquiring several opportunities in their life. For example, Steve job,
who spent most of his time seeking enlightenment and working hard on new
innovations, successfully provides effective inventions to the current world and
generate a bunch of money.

On the other hand, there is something to be said for simply being in the right
place at the right time such as meeting someone by chance who can offer a good
job or rare opportunity. For instance, my comrade who accidentally met some
workers from a well-known company gained an unexpected offer which leads to
various work opportunities. Although the influence of luck offers some benefits,
people should not depend their entire life on that. If one is willing to work hard,
success will eventually be achieved, with or without the added benefit of luck.

In conclusion, while working hard leads to meeting norms and living expenses,
luck can provide unexpected opportunities to them as well. However, they
should not rely on luck all the time of their working life.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
