Education is often viewed as school in a traditional, formal sense. Many people believe that
true learning can only take place in formal classroom setting. Others feel education occurs in
many different forms and environments. They may not be a definitive answer to the question
of, “What is education?” However, we can start thinking about the purpose of education.

In 1990, UNESCO launched EFA, the movement to provide quality education for all
children, youth, and adults by the year of 2015. The unfortunate reality is that for many
countries, larger issues come before improving the quality of education. How can we achieve
the goals of EFA when the numerous countries around the world are faced with challenges
that seem far too impossible to overcome? The answer lies in attempting to bridge some of
the gaps that prevent developing nations to compete with developed nations. One example is
that of providing greater access to technology and narrowing the ever widening digital divide.
In many ways, the most basic access to technology can serve as a valuable educational tool.
Individuals who are not afforded this access are at disadvantage when trying to grasp
opportunities to make life better for themselves, their families, and their community.

Imagine 15 grocery bags filled with plastic trash piled up on every single yard of shoreline in the world.
That’s how much land-based plastic trash ended up in the world’s oceans in just one year. The world
generates at least 3.5 million tons of plastic and other solid waste a day, 10 times the amount a century
ago, according to World Bank researchers. The U.S. is the king of trash, producing a world-leading 250
million tons a year—roughly 4.4 pounds of trash per person per day. And yet there are a growing number
of people—often young millennial women—who are part of a zero-waste movement. Their yearly trash
output can be small enough to fit inside an eight-ounce mason jar. These are not wannabe hippies, but
people embracing a modern minimalist lifestyle. They say it saves them money and time and enriches
their lives. Kathryn Kellogg is one of those young millennials who has downsized her trash pile—
anything that hasn’t been composted or recycled—so two years' worth literally fits inside one 16-ounce
jar. Meanwhile, the average American produces 1,500 pounds of trash a year. (Learn more about Kellogg
in the recent plastic issue of National Geographic magazine). “We also saved about $5,000 a year by
purchasing fresh food instead of packaged, buying in bulk, and making our own products like cleaners
and deodorant,” says Kellogg, who lives with her husband in a small house in Vallejo, California.
Kellogg is one of several zero-waste bloggers who share online the details of their efforts, along with
practical tips and encouragement, for others looking to embrace a zero-waste lifestyle. In three years, she
has gained 300,000 monthly readers on her blog goingzerowaste.com and on Instagram. “I think many
people are ready to cut their waste,” says Kellogg. However, she doesn’t want people to fixate on trying
to stuff all their trash into a jar. Zero-waste is really about trying to minimize your trash and making
better choices in your life, she says. “Just do the best you can and buy less.”

5. What is the main idea of the passage?

Australia is no stranger to wildfires, but this season has been unprecedented in scale and intensity - and
the summer is far from over. So far at least 28 people have died in blazes that have swept the country,
more than 3,000 homes have been destroyed and roughly 7.3 million hectares (17.9 million acres) of land
has been burnt. So what has caused the blazes which have devastated such huge swathes of the country?
The country is in the grip of a heatwave, with record-breaking temperatures over the last three months. In
mid-December the nation saw the hottest day in history - the average temperature was 41.9 degrees
Celsius.
These conditions, which show few signs of abating in the next few weeks, have been accompanied by
brisk winds which fan the flames and push the smoke across Australia’s major cities. Authorities say that
wind speeds have been recorded at 60 miles per hour.
All this follows the country’s driest spring since records began 120 years ago, with much of New South
Wales and Queensland experiencing rainfall shortfalls since early 2017. Trees, shrubs and grasslands
have turned into the perfect tinder for flames.
What is being done to stop the fires?
So far, the response has been largely reactive - aimed at evacuating residents to safety and stopping the
blazes from spreading. Australia relies on hundreds of thousands of volunteer firefighters, who have been
working around the clock to try and bring the fires under control for months.
The armed forces have now also been deployed to fight the fires and evacuate residents and the United
States, Canada and New Zealand have also sent resources including firefighters to help stem the blazes.
But in the long term, experts have said that there should be a review of building standards in bushfire
zones to create resilient homes and larger buffer zones between the bush and properties.
10. What are the causes of the latest Australian wildfire?
A. High heatwave
B. Brisk wind
C. Driest spring ever recorded
D. A combination of extreme heat, prolonged drought and strong winds
E. None of the above

11. What can we conclude from the chart given?

A. The average temperature was lowest few years before 1920
B. Average temperatures have been increasing dramatically
C. Average temperature got slightly under 0 for the last time at 2020
D. There is no data of mean temperature at around 2010
E. All of the above

12. Why does Australia rely on the volunteer firefighters?

A. They are working all night and day to tame the fire
B. They dedicate most of their time to make sure the fire is under control
C. They try to control the fire around the burnt area voluntarily
D. They are working hard without getting paid
E. All of the above

13. The last paragraph of the passage implies that…

A. A revolutionary plan is needed to upgrade the quality of houses in the bushfire area
B. Good building standard will create homes that withstand upcoming disasters
C. A wildfire might occur again somewhere in the future
D. Good building standard is important
E. All of the above

14. The word unprecedented on the first paragraph can be replaced with…
A. Known
B. Unbelievable
C. Massive
D. Predictable

Thomas Matulessy, also known as Kapitan Pattimura or Ahmad Lussy or simply Pattimura, was an
Ambonese soldier and National Hero of Indonesia.
Pattimura was born on 8 June 1783 in Saparua, Maluku; the name Pattimura was his pseudonym. His

Pattimura joined the British army after they took the Maluku islands from the Dutch colonials. When the

1817. He and his fellows were sentenced to death. On 16 December 1817, Pattimura together with
Anthony Reebok, Philip Latumahina, and Said Perintah were hanged in front of Fort Nieuw Victoria in
Ambon.
Pattimura and his war have been used as symbols for both Maluku independence, such as with the short-
