Academic Integrity in Research Paper

Research is defined as the creation of new knowledge and/or the use of existing knowledge in a
new and creative way so as to generate new concepts, methodologies and understandings. This could
include synthesis and analysis of previous research to the extent that it leads to new and creative
outcomes.
This definition of research is consistent with a broad notion of research and experimental
development (R&D) as comprising of creative work undertaken on a systematic basis, in order to
increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of humanity, culture and society, and the use of
this stock of knowledge to devise new applications. This definition of research encompasses pure and
strategic basic research, applied research and experimental development. Applied research is an original
investigation undertaken to acquire new knowledge but directed towards a specific, practical aim or
objective.1

If we had understood the definition of Research, its main purpose is to gain knowledge,
investigate existing knowledge and to create new knowledge. Therefore, academic integrity is a
fundamental principle that researchers should keep in mind when conducting research and of course
when writing the research paper. Lying and cheating about your research will compromise your purpose
of sharing the knowledge gained from the research.
One aspect of research is to cite resources. It is important to cite sources used for your research.
It is to acknowledge the work of your source, to show that your sources are legitimate and valid and also
to avoid plagiarism.
Another aspect is to ensure that all data presented in a research paper is accurate and reliable.
Researchers must be diligent in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data without bias or manipulation.
Falsifying or misrepresenting data not only violates academic integrity but also erodes trust in scientific
inquiry.
If collaborating with other researchers, you should do it with honesty and transparency. It should
be conducted ethically and give appropriate and equal credit to all participants.
In conclusion, maintaining academic integrity with your research paper cultivates trust among
your colleagues, respect of your professors or academic authorities. And ensuring true, honest and
reliable research paper.
