Experiment Name: Study on the material path through Comber


machine.

1.1 Introduction
In the process of yarn spinning, the comber machine plays a vital role to improve the
quality of yarn.The sliver produced in the carding process has poor fibre orientation
and higher short fiber content.The main objective of the comber machine is to remove
short fibre and to improve the fibre orientation.The operation involved in the comber
machine is known as a combing operation.Combing is an intermittent or discontinuous
operation carried out between carding and draw frame.Combing is define as removing
the process of short fibres and impurities by using a comb or comb associated with
knives,brushes,and rollers.The combed yarn has appearance,strenth,evenness,and
luster better than carded yarn.
The major objects of comber are:

• Elimination of precisely pre-determined quantity of short fibers.


• Elimination of the remaining impurities.
• Elemination of a large proportion of the neps in the fiber material.
1.2 Degree of Combing
The wastage which is removed from the comber machine during processing is known
as comber’s noil.The amount of noil during combing operation expressed in percentage
is called the degree of combing.It contains mainly of short fibres and neps.The quality of
combed yarn depends on the degree of combing.

1.3 The contribution of Combing to the Yarn Quality

1.6 Material passage diagram of comber machine:


At first lap is fed by lap roller. Then lap is passed though the condenser. Material is passed
under the feed roller and through the nipper. Here top and bottom nippers are used to nip
the lap. Then lap is passed through the detaching roller. Here a cloth clearer is used to clean
the lap. Then it passes through the condenser and calendar roller. Then it enters into the
drafting zone by the feed table. Then the drafted material is passed by the help of belt into
trumpet. Finally it is deposited into can by passing though coiler calendar roller and coiler
head.

1.7 Function of important parts


1.7.1 Nippers: The nipper assembly is of enormous importance to the design of the
comber.The nipper assmbly has to perform a strong and even clamping operation on a
relatively thick lap sheet(upto 80 ktex).
1.7.2 The cylinder combs: The cylinder combs is combing the forward portion of fibre fringe
that is hold by top and bottom nipper.
1.7.3 The top comb: The function of top comb is to remove the impurities,neps and short
fibres remain in the sheet as the other fibres are detached and this retained material passes
into the noil during the next combing cycle.Top comb is used to hold uncombed portion of
fibre fringe.
