An update on Pronominal Verbs (Verbes pronominaux)
French pronominal verbs are accompanied by the reflexive pronoun se or
s' preceding the infinitive, thus, the grammatical term "pronominal,"
which means "relating to a pronoun." All conjugated verbs, with the
exception of the imperative form, require a subject pronoun. Pronominal verbs
also need a reflexive pronoun, like this:
Nous nous habillons. = We're getting dressed (dressing ourselves).
Tu te baignes. = You're taking a bath (bathing yourself).
There are a few kinds of French pronominal verbs. But in general, we can say
the action and, thus construction, of the pronominal verb is reflexive,
reciprocal, idiomatic or essential.
French students first learn about reflexive verbs, but those are only one of four
types of pronominal verbs. Click on the lessons for more information and a list
of common verbs:
1. Reflexive verbs – subject acts on itself
2. Reciprocal verbs – subjects act on one another
3. Idiomatic pronominal verbs – reflexive pronoun changes the meaning of
the verb
4. Essentially pronominal verbs – verb can only be used pronominally
5.Many French verbs can be used reflexively and reciprocally as well as non-
pronominally.
Par exemple…

Nous nous voyons dans la glace. We see ourselves in the mirror.

Nous nous voyons tous les jours. We see each other every day.

Nous voyons beaucoup de films. We see lots of movies.
