Narration: Do you remember the feeling of making a new friend? Have you ever make a new friend that wasn’t even a person at all? In this
exciting book by Zietlow Miller, we meet a young girl, Sophie, that makes a SQUASH her best friend! After some time, Sophie notices that her
friend is starting to change. Her squash isn’t the same as when she first got it. Sophie quickly realizes that their friendship can’t last forever.

Narration: Sophie is a young girl that loves a good vegetable. She loves vegetables so much, that on a warm fall day she buys a firm, shiny
squash from a farmer and makes it her best friend. She even draws a face on the squash and names it Bernice!

Narration: Sophie adores Bernice. They do everything together, from going to story time at the library to visiting squash at the farmers market.
They would even roll down the hill doing somersaults. As their friendship continues to grow, they become inseparable.

Narration: At school one day, Sophie’s classmates notice that Bernice has some dark spots, and her shape is starting to change. She’s not as firm
or shiny as she used to be.

Narration: Sophie goes back to the farmer and asks how she can save Bernice. The farmer tells her exactly what to do. So, Sophie
takes Bernice into the yard, puts her in a bed of soil, tucks her in, and kisses her goodnight. Bernice will sleep for the whole winter.
