Shaping Our World P-12 PM Design Document

Overview: This unit focuses on the initial exploration of 3D shapes and their relationship to 2D
shapes. The shapes unit is typically taught over a period of 8 or more weeks. This mini-unit is
designed for 1 week of instruction.

Standards:
 MGSEK.G.4 - Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different
sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences,
parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/“corners”) and other attributes (e.g., having sides
of equal length).
 MGSEK.G.5 - Model shapes in the world by building shapes from components (e.g.,
sticks and clay balls) and drawing shapes. MGSEK.G.6 Compose simple shapes to form
larger shapes. For example, “Can you join these two triangles with full sides touching to
make a rectangle.

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to identify the 2D shapes that compose the following 3D shapes:
rectangular prism, pyramid, cube, cylinder, sphere.
2. Students will be able to identify the following parts of a 3D shape: edge, face, vertex.

Learning Tasks – Please see the learning tasks below: Students will engage in game-based
online activities throughout the duration of the week. These activities include Seesaw
assignments, Nearpod assignments, and Kahoots. Student will use Flipgrid to answer any
discussion questions. Lastly, students will complete a group collaboration project in which they
will create an voiceover for a 3D shape book.

Time Flexibility – While students are given the whole week to complete all assignments, it is
highly recommended that students complete 1 activity each day. The group activity will last for 2
days, for a total of 4 activities to be completed throughout the week.

Time Management - Students are encouraged to finish 1 assignment each day to stay on track
and finish the mini-unit within a timely manner. Each assignment should take students about 30
minutes to complete. There are opportunities for extension activities is the student would like to
continue exploring.

Group Composition – Students will collaborate with their peers to create a 3D shapes book
made with an instructor-provided template on PowerPoint. Students will be provided with
sentence stems or frames, pictures of transparent 3D shapes, and a PowerPoint template.
Students will be required to select 1 slide (with 1 3D shape) to voiceover. Within the voiceover,
students will include the following elements: (1) name the 3D shape, (2) give an example of a 3D
shape in real life, (3) the number of faces, (4) number of edges, (5) and number of vertices of the
3D shape. To make the presentation seamless, the instructor will apply transitions between each
slide.

Instructor’s role – The instructor will begin the unit with a synchronous learning session on
Microsoft Teams. During this time the teacher will introduce/review academic content and go
over course expectations with students. The instructor will also provide an overview video for
each week’s module to ensure that expectations are known. These overview videos will be
recorded and posted for viewing on demand for student and/or parent. To continue, the instructor
will (1) provide timely feedback on assignments, (2) ensure that each activity is aligned to
standards and objectives (3) provide accommodations and modifications as needed.

Learner engagement – Each learner is responsible for logging onto the Google Classroom
website each morning. There a daily module will be posted with instructions for what to do for
the day. Each module will include a review component, presassessment, activity, and formative
assessment. Each module should be completed by 9PM the same day unless indicated otherwise
by the instructor. Students are to complete assignments individually unless otherwise noted by
the professor. Students will work collaboratively on one group assignment.

External resources – Please see these external resources that might aid you in further
understanding 3D shapes.
 BrainPop Jr. – 3D Shapes: This resource has a specific target audience (lower elementary
students) and is aligned with common core/state standards. It provides objective and
accurate information while providing a well organize appearance. Instructors are able to
find videos, assessments, games, and projects for various content areas.
 PBS Learning Media – Sesame Street Shapes Hexagon: This resource was selected
because of its authority, it comes from an educational non-profit organization. The
video that is selected is targeted toward young learners and provides objective
information about geometrical principles. The website is well organized and has a
natural flow to it.
 Ted Ed – 3D Shapes Song: TedEd is a credible resource that provides objective
information on an array of topics. This resources was chosen because it has an
informational video with an assessment tool below the video. This link also provides
opportunities for educational extensions and discussion prompts.
 NCTM.org – Patch Tools: This organization was selected because it is from a non-
profit organization. The target audience is identified as being Prek-3 rd and 5th grade

students. Not only is this resource advantageous for mathematics instruction; but the
homepage is also well organized enough to help the user find more resources.
 Georgia Standards – Curriculum Frameworks: This resource is from a state
government website and is a tool for parents and educators to use when trying to
support student learning. It provides various types of resources for different types of
activities (hand on, virtual, and kinesthetic). This document is updated every few years
to ensure relevance and inclusion of the most effective instruction.

Feedback and Formative Evaluation – Students will receive feedback after the completion of
each assignment. Feedback will be in the form of 2 glows and 1 grow to ensure that students
know what they are doing correctly and what needs improvement. Formative evaluations will be
conducted regularly throughout the week.

Addressing the 3 main UDL principles:


 Multiple means of representation: External resources include information in visual and
audial formats which appeal to learners of this age group.
 Multiple means of expression: Within the group composition, students are able to express
their learning through visual, written, and audio representations.
 Multiple means of engagement: Students are presented with online activities and games
to play as well as kinesthetic extension activities and real-life application activities
through the external resource section.
