Introduction
English is known as a universal language and it is being used in different
context such as in school, work and even in our daily lives. Students are one of
the regular users of the English language in and outside od their classrooms.
They use it to communicate, in recitation and speeches. Students have
acknowledged the importance and function of English language as an
international language as well as using it as a communicative tool (Estliden,
2017).
Student leaders are also one of the regular speakers of the English
language. Student leaders has been part of every school as it was mandated by
our government, more specifically the Department of Education (DepEd) in
accordance with department order (DO) no. 47, s. 2014 titled “Constitution and
By-Laws of Supreme Pupil Government and Supreme Student Government in
Elementary and Secondary Schools”, as it has been stated as foremost co-2
curricular learner-ed organized to implement pertinent programs, projects and
activities in schools nationwide.
Thus, other student leaders in Kasiglahan Village Senior High School, like
Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG), and Red Cross Youth (RCY),
and many more are student leaders that implements extracurricular programs
and activities in their respective organizations. In these independent
organizations and dependent organizations or clubs, the student are required
more often use English language, whenever they speak in public and when they
write documents and records. However, some student leaders find it challenging
to speak and comprehend the English language, however, many of these student
leaders are more confident when they are using Filipino Language. Furthermore,
their limited language skills might be one of the determinants directly and
indirectly influencing their success (Matirosyan, Hwang & Wanjohi, 2023).
Other related studies are focused on conducting studies on the importance
of English language in students academic success, however, the focus of this
study is the co-curricular or extracurricular achievement of the student leaders.
This study aims to examine the effect of English professional development on
student leaders, exploring and have a depth-understanding of the factors that
affect the English professional development of student leaders’ achievement.
This study is significant because it will provide insights into the
effectiveness of English professional development in improving the leadership
skills of student leaders. The findings of this study can be a guideline for
educational policies and practices to promote the development of English
proficiency among student leaders therefore enhancing their academic and
leadership achievement.
Background of the Study
One of the most important skills a student can have are his ability to speak
and understand English language, as speaking skill is regarded one of the most
difficult aspects of language learning (Leong, & Ahmadi, 2017). English language
is a universal language, where in the Philippines English is one of the official
languages (Santos, Fernandez, & Ilustre, 2022). English is part of their official
language and more than 14 million Filipinos use this language. This language is
being used in schools, workplace and even in their daily lives.
This study is seeking in depth exploration not only to students, but more
specifically to the student leaders. Furthermore, a review of the literature showed
a strong relationship between the use of extracurricular activities and students’
learning of English (Zakhir 2019), and other study’s scope only focused on
regular students, not on student leaders. Moreover, since having organizations
and clubs is part of school’s co-curricular project in accordance with department
order (DO) no. 47, s. 2014. In addition, there are a variety of clubs and
organizations in Kasiglahan Village Senior High School. Currently, KVSHS has
four independent organizations and four dependent organizations/clubs.
Independent organizations, these organizations are mandated by our
government, whilst dependent organizations or clubs are organizations that are
established based on the school's recommendation. These organizations are
crucial to a student’s achievement. Because after implementing cooperative
learning, results revealed positive effects in developing students’ leadership skills
such as critical thinking, effective communication, decision making, and
teamwork (Petre 2020). Hence, to avoid any deficiencies to the learner’s
performance, this study will reveal the factors why English affects the student
leader’s achievement.
Overall, the findings of this study can become a guideline on how schools
should approach students when it comes to learning English language by
analyzing the findings of this study and come up with the leading effect on how
being proficient in English can affect a student leaders’ achievement.
