Frictional properties
Rolling-element bearings can have less
frictional resistance than high grade partial
journal bearings operating with flooded
lubrication systems. They also have low
starting friction. However, they generate and
transmit noise.

Mounting design aspects
Seals must be included in design to exclude dirt
and foreign matter, and retain lubricant

Contact seals (low speeds, grease):

Non-contact seals (high speed, air or oil):

Mounting design aspects
Interference fits are not enough: locating bearings
must be additionally fixed to shaft or housing

Axial preloading may be used
• To remove internal clearance
• To increase fatigue life
• To decrease shaft slope at bearing

Bearing selection
Definitions
• Bearing life L: # of revolutions of one
particular bearing before first damage to
rolling element or ring
• Rating life LR or L10 (of group): # of
revolutions that 90% of the group completes
before first damage
• Catalogue rating C or C10: load associated
with LR

3.33 C : bearing rated capacity (lbf or kN)

 C  LR : life (revolutions) under rated capacity
L = K r LR  
K F
 a e Fe : equivalent load (lbf or kN)
0.3 L : desired life (revolutions) under Fe
 L 
Creq = K a Fe   K r : reliability factor
 K r LR  K a : application factor

LR = L10 = 90 ×106 revolutions (e.g. Timken)

or
LR = L10 = 106 revolutions (e.g. SKF)
