Bearing

Bearing is a m/c element which support to

another moving element as well as guide
its motion.

Classification
It is classified on the type of friction between
bearing surface and element. Journal

Terminology
– Outer ring, which
contains the outer raceway
– Inner ring, which contains
the inner raceway
– Complement of balls

Load Carrying Capacity or Load Rating
1) Static load carrying capacity (Co ):- It is define as the
static load which corresponds to a total permanent
deformation of balls and races, at the most heavily
stressed point, equal to 0.0001 of the ball diameter.

2) Dynamic load carrying capacity (C) :- It is define as the

radial load in radial bearing (thrust load in thrust bearing)
that can be carried for minimum life of one million (106)
revolution.

3) Life of bearing (L):- It is define as the number of

revolutions (no. of operating hours at a given constant
speed) which the bearing runs before first evidence of
fatigue crack in one of the races or balls.
P G Damle 8
4) Equivalent Dynamic Bearing Load (P) :- It is define as
a constant radial load (incase of radial bearing), or constant
thrust load (thrust bearing), which when applied to the
bearing would give the same life as that when the bearing is
subjected to actual forces.

P  XFr  YFa
5) Load Life relationship :- The relation between the
dynamic load carrying capacity (C), equivalent dynamic
load (P), & bearing life(L) is given by,

Selection of Bearing From manufacturing
catalogue
(i) Calculate the radial & Axial force, & determine the
diameter of the shaft.
(ii) Select the type of bearing for the given application(i.e.
Roller, Ball, Taper etc.)
(iii) Determine the values of ‘X’ & ‘Y’(radial & thrust factors)
from the catalogue.

(iv) Calculate the equivalent dynamic load by;

P  XFr  YFa
(v) Make the decision about the expected bearing life and
express the life ‘L’ in million revolutions.

(vi) Calculate the dynamic load capacity from,

(vii) Check whether the selected bearing has the required
dynamic capacity .

Designation of Bearing
It is designated as 4 ,5 numbers or combination of letters &
figures.
 First digit(letter) indicates the bearing type for exp.
0 – Double Row Angular Contact Ball Bearings.
1 – Self Aligning Ball Bearings.
2 – Spherical Roller Bearing & Spherical Thrust Bearings

3 – Taper Roller Bearings.

4 – Double Row Deep Groove Ball Bearings.
5 – Thrust Ball Bearings.
6 – single Row deep groove ball Bearings.
7 – single Row Angular Contact Ball Bearings.
N – cylindrical Roller Bearing
The second digit indicate the Width (Height) Series
And last two digit indicate the diameter series by multiplying
them by 5.
