READING
2 Read the text and match sentences a–f with gaps 1–5. There is one extra sentence.
When my husband suggested going camping for the weekend last month, I was quite excited. The plan was
simple. We wanted to ride our bicycles to a lake about 40 kilometres away from our town, camp there till
Sunday afternoon and then ride back home. We felt well prepared for the trip. We had been cycling regularly
for the past few months and felt in good shape. 1 _____ But it was on this trip that I discovered some real
truths about camping.
Truth 1: The best spot is right next to you and is already taken.
The ride to the lake went OK, although we got to the lakeside later than we’d expected. To start with, we didn’t
leave home as planned because I had to wait for Frank. He had stopped off at a sports shop to get some fishing
equipment. 2 _____ When we got to the lakeside, we quickly saw a few ideal spots to set up camp, but all
of them were already taken up by other campers.
Truth 2: The Sun goes down three times faster if you’re trying to put up your tent.
Still enthusiastic, we found a decent spot and started unpacking the tent. It was brand new, still in the original
packaging. We hadn’t had time to unpack it at home which proved to be a big mistake. 3 _____ Although we
thought we still had over two hours of daylight left, when we eventually finished putting it up, it was
completely dark. Tired and hungry, we ate some sandwiches that I’d made for the trip and then fell fast asleep.
Truth 3: It’s almost certain to rain during the night if there’s a hole in the roof of the tent.
But the day wasn’t over for us as disaster struck at about 2 a.m. We woke up to discover that the tent floor was
wet through as rain was coming in through a hole in the top of the tent. We’d probably not noticed it because
it was dark when we’d finished putting it up. 4 _____ As a result, all our clothes and things were completely
soaked. The worst thing, though, was that Frank had accidentally broken the box with the worms he’d brought
for fishing. 5 _____ So I had to wait outside in the pouring rain (with no umbrella!) until he’d cleared everything
up and dried out the tent. And we had only been at the campsite for several hours …
