After a very challenging year of demanding classes, exams and relationship problems, by June, I was in urgent
need of a holiday. I searched the Internet for days, looking for destinations that would be inexpensive, relaxing
and enjoyable, and I finally chose the Italian island of Ischia. It offered a wide variety of affordable
accommodation, a stunning harbour, a castle to explore, and the chance to go on several enjoyable excursions.
It sounded ideal – but holidays don’t always turn out as imagined!
The first couple of days were perfect, despite the fact that a delayed flight and a bit of trouble at passport
control slowed things down a little. But the crossing by boat from the mainland was calm, so, for once, I didn’t
get seasick. I was also pleased to find that my room was great, and the breathtaking views were even more
stunning than the photos had suggested.
Actually, it was the views that nearly killed me. On day three, I was hiking along one of the trails, admiring the
sea view, when I caught my foot on something which sent me right over the edge of the cliff. I was lucky there
was a small ledge about five metres down, but as it broke my fall, I heard a sickening sound from my lower leg
and knew I had broken a bone. I took out my phone, thinking I’d call the emergency services, but I’d forgotten
to charge it, and anyhow, I didn’t know what number to dial!
Luckily, a young couple hiking behind me had seen me fall. They rushed over, reassured me that I would be all
right, and rang for the rescue services. Although it felt like hours, it was probably only forty-five minutes before
they arrived, pulled me back up the cliff, and got me into an ambulance. Of course, they had to put a cast on
my leg, so I spent the rest of the holiday sitting on my balcony looking out at a – now inaccessible – view.
As a result of my experience, I’ll never again scoff at those who promote travel safety. I realised I’d made
several basic mistakes, and was, justifiably, paying the price.
Having experienced a challenging year, the narrator felt (1) ____________ to go on holiday. He had three
criteria in mind while searching: (2) ____________, relaxation and enjoyability. In the end, he chose the Italian
island of Ischia.
He experienced (3) ____________ on the way there, but found the island to be even better than he had
anticipated. Unfortunately, while hiking on the third day, he tripped on something and fell (4) ____________.
He was unable to call for help because he hadn’t charged his phone. Moreover, he didn’t know the emergency
number. A young couple who had seen him fall called for help and (5) ____________ that he would be all right.
He spent the rest of the holiday admiring the view from his balcony, but he learnt several lessons about travel
safety as a result of his experience.

Subject: Summer Programme Preparations
This year’s Summer Programme is about to start! Thanks to everyone who’s registered for the four-week
Relantus Challenge Programme! As you know, it starts in just two weeks, so we want you to be fully prepared.
Arrivals commence at 9.00 on 15 July, so remember to be on time! Teens will be welcomed at the Forest
Building, just south of the car park. Pro-Teens should go to the Sky Dome, which is a five-minute walk north of
the car park. Warriors will meet on the west side of the car park at 9.30 and take a coach to the Adventure
Bridge site. Please review our rules and regulations before arrival.
Tekst D
Sally: All packed and ready to go! I’m really looking forward to it. From the article I read, there are pretty
equal numbers of boys and girls, so we won’t feel like ‘extras.’
David: Yeah, that’s great. I’m not packed, though. I simply don’t know what to take.
Karen: Have another look at the list. You don’t need much. And don’t forget to sign up for some of the special
projects. I forgot last year, so all the interesting ones were already full.
David: I thought all of them were worthwhile.
Karen: Yeah, but they’re not equally enjoyable. I ended up cleaning the forest trails last year. Ugh!
David: OK, I’ll have a look. BTW, can I take a digital camera?
Karen: Cameras are fine, but that’s all. No mobile phones is the rule, but you’ll be so busy you won’t even
notice that you haven’t got one!

Hi Lauren!
Have you heard about the Relantus Summer Challenge programme? It takes place from July 15 th to
(3) _______________, and I think it’s going to be amazing! My sister and I are both going, but we’ll be in
different sections because of our age difference. She’s only 12, so she’ll be in the Teens section. I’m turning 17
just before it starts, so I’ll be in the Warriors. It would be great if you could sign up too. You have to pay a 150
pound registration fee, and the programme fees are quite high, but I think it will be worth it. The programme
aims at gender equality as it has almost the (4) _______________ of boys and girls, especially in the older
groups; it also tries to give everyone the same opportunities. The one negative is that participants can’t have
their (5) _______________ with them, but I suppose we’ll get used to it. I thought your brother might like to
come too. I know he’s 19, which means he’ll be among the oldest people there, but I think he’d love it!
Let me know what you think.
