What is the Civil Rights Scholars Program?


This program was created by the CPS Office of Student Protections and Title IX to provide a cohort of
high school sophomore, junior and senior students with an experiential learning opportunity to expand
their leadership capabilities, build community across the District, and shape Chicago Public Schools’
response to bias-based harm. As part of this unique opportunity, students will participate in field trips,
hear from guest speakers, and design a project for their schools to build community and prevent bias-

Who can apply to the Civil Rights Scholars Program?


All sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are enrolled in a Chicago Public Schools high school during the
2023-2024 academic school year.

How long is the Civil Rights Scholars Program?


The program runs from October 2023 to May 2024. Scholars meet twice a month. This entails one
Tuesday evening session focused on skill building and project development, and one Saturday field trip
focused on experiential learning, community building, and exploring new parts of Chicago. Please review

How do students get to and from the program?


The Office of Student Protections and Title IX will provide students with CTA cards as needed.

How can students apply?


Students should use the Civil Rights Scholars Program Application to apply for the program. The
application is due on Monday, September 25, 2023. Students can expect to hear back the week of
October 2, 2023.
