Rick ran his own fund called Pacific Partners &
worked with Munger and Buffett to gradually
acquire a controlling interest in a company called
Blue Chip Stamps.
Rick's track record from 1965 to 1988, against a
compounded gain of 316 % for the S&P, came off
with 22,200 %.
Guerin did deals with Munger and Buffett, but also
invested independently. He became a major
shareholder and director of Pacific Southwest
Airline, which in 1988 was merged into USAir.

Blue Chip Stamps became the vehicle through

which See's Candy, The Buffalo News, and
Wesco Financial were acquired, and these
three companies later became essential to the
cultural and financial foundation of Berkshire.

According to Buffett, Rick Guerin was a very smart man
but unlike Buffett and Munger, Guerin wanted to get
rich quick, so he personally borrowed/leveraged
money to invest in the stock market.

During the market crash in the 1970s Guerin was

forced to sell all of his Berkshire Hathaway stock
to Buffet at 40 dollars per share so he could get
money to pay back his debt/margin calls. Berkshire
Hathaway stock is now over $450,000 per share.

Nespresso is a coffee machine in which a

sealed pod filled with ground coffee is
inserted after which a needle-like spout
pierces one end. Hot water is pumped
through this needle at high pressure

As the capsule becomes pressurised with

water, the foil is forced against a spiked
plate which bursts it inwards, and out
through the spout which runs an espresso.

In 1976, Nestlé filed its first patent for a

single-serve coffee system.

It took 10 years after the first patent was

filed for the product to come to market.
