General Notes

G1. Siniat’s free structural engineering design service has prepared the framing design/s in this document. This framing
design was dependent on the information provided to Siniat and any relevant information not disclosed to Siniat
may invalidate the framing design.
G2. This document from the manufacturer covers framing design tables and details. It does not cover all aspects of
design for a specific project and as such, additional engineering consultants may need to be engaged to cover site

2
specific applications and detailing including but not limited to specific architectural features, transfer of seismic
loads to specific building elements, location of control joints, etc.
G3. When all or part of the design criteria and other related information has been provided to Siniat, Siniat has not
verified its accuracy and it is expected that it has been prepared in accordance with the project’s specification,
relevant Australian Standard/s and Building Code requirements, with the usual skill and diligence required of an
appropriately qualified person in that field.
G4. When the design criteria has not been provided to Siniat, then the design of Siniat products will be conducted using
the typical load cases listed in table 1. If additional load cases other than shown in table 1 are to be analysed or
other serviceability deflection limits are required, then Siniat must be informed prior to construction. By default, no
live loads (Q) or shelf loads are considered. By default, internal pressures are calculated using Table 5.1A from
AS/NZS 1170.2 Structural Design Actions – Wind actions. These internal pressures account for the design case where
there are no combined openings in any external surface greater than 0.5% of the total surface area (ie: no dominant
openings). This design case is able to bring cost efficiency to a project but a building management plan must be
implemented for high wind events to close all openings. If design cases whereby openings greater than 0.5% are to
be considered then please contact Siniat.
G5. If a wind report has been provided to Siniat that clearly identifies the required wind loads for the specific building
elements used in the project, then this will be used.
G6. This framing design document and other related literature from Siniat is issued on the condition that it is subject to
the project’s approval process before construction, which must include a check of the design criteria, loading
conditions, and suitability of the products and systems for the intended application. Product substitution may
render the design inadequate to resist the stated loading conditions, or not be suitable for the intended application
and as such is not permitted.
G7. All products shown must be manufactured or supplied by Siniat, or is a Siniat nominated product, otherwise this
framing design document is invalid.
G8. The wall / ceiling frame design in this document is valid only if products are installed in accordance with the relevant
manufacturer’s technical literature and issued drawings.
G9. The wall / ceiling frame designed herein relies on the surrounding construction to be structurally adequate to resist
the loads imposed, including adequate anchor or fastener capacity into the substrate. The design of the surrounding
construction is the responsibility of others. The surrounding construction must not impose any load back to the wall
/ ceiling frame shown in this document.
G10. Anchors used to fix the wall / ceiling framing to the surrounding concrete construction are Siniat specific anchors as
nominated in the relevant framing tables. Siniat Screw Anchors are seismic rated in cracked concrete. Refer to the
‘Siniat Screw Anchor Product Data Sheet’ on current capacity information into concrete. The capacity of concrete
screw anchors are highly dependent on the grade of concrete used. If the grade of concrete is different to the above
summary table, then Siniat must be notified. Alternatively, the framing tables may show the structural demand for
fastener/s fixed to the surrounding construction. Anchor capacity to the surrounding construction can be affected by
several factors, in particular edge clearance, anchor spacing and substrate strength, which must be taken into
consideration.
G11. The wall / ceiling linings and framing shown are representative only, and some generic details may not be an exact
representation of all scenarios. Some framing members may not be shown for clarity.
G12. Refer to the projects Wall Type Schedule or Reflected Ceiling Plan for specific information on those elements.
G13. Any requirement for higher walls, greater spans or larger openings widths which exceed the allowable maximum
values nominated in this document will require alternative structural framing by others.
G14. This document is copyright protected. Use of all or any part of this document without the written permission of
Siniat may infringe copyright.

Design Standards

Wall and ceiling framing designed in accordance with the following standards:

D1. AS/NZS 4600 Cold Formed Steel Structures,

D2. AS/NZS 2785 Suspended Ceilings.

Steel Framing Manufactured / Supplied By Siniat

S1. Framing screws are to be a minimum of 10 gauge for external framing, and a minimum of 8g gauge for internal
framing unless otherwise noted. All screw fixings to comply with AS3566 or test data obtained in accordance with
AS3566 or AS/NZS4600. Stainless steel fasteners must NOT be used for framing screws.
S2. The steel frame must be protected from prolonged exposure to moisture, liquid water, or airborne contaminants
such as salts to avoid corrosion.
S3. Framing shall NOT come into contact with green wood containing acidic material or CCA treated timbers unless it is
blocked by an impervious non-conductive material.
4
Cold Formed Steel Wall Framing

W1. All walls are non-load bearing (except for self-weight) unless otherwise noted. Non-load bearing walls have an
allowance for deflection at the head of the wall and are not suitable for vertical axial loads, nor are they suitable as
bracing shear walls.
W2. All studs are assumed to be full height. If notched, spliced or penetrations made, they must be in accordance with
Siniat published or designed limits. Splices in studs shall not be used where production lengths are available and also
must not be used in load bearing applications.
W3. Top-hats and furring channels are not to be fixed to noggin tracks and/or head tracks unless specified by Siniat.
W4. Siniat wall framing in this document is designed to resist earthquake actions as determined by AS 1170.4 but minor
damage may be possible even in a serviceability earthquake event.

Cold Formed Steel Ceiling Framing

C1. All ceilings in this document are non-trafficable unless otherwise noted.
C2. Ceiling frame members are required to be continuous to resist earthquake actions. Refer to construction details for
minimum overlap and fixing information.
C3. Minimum gaps between services and ceiling framing must be maintained in accordance with AS/NZS 2785
Suspended Ceilings and the projects requirements.
C4. Wall partitions must not be fixed to the underside of suspended ceiling systems as this will affect the integrity of the
ceiling in an earthquake. In this case, wall partitions must be full height.
C5. Siniat have assumed a serviceability inter-storey drift of H/500. Where the drift on a project exceeds this limit,
please contact Siniat.
C6. Siniat ceiling framing in this document is designed to resist earthquake actions as determined by AS 1170.4 but
minor damage may be possible even in a serviceability earthquake event.

Masonry Veneer Walls

M1. The steel wall frame shall not bear any weight from the masonry wall, including over openings.
M2. Veneer ties shall be installed at maximum 600mm intervals along each stud, so to provide an even distribution of
lateral load to the wall framing.
M3. Veneer ties shall be installed as close to the flange-web junction as possible to minimise torsional rotation.
M4. Veneer tiles shall also be installed in a way that prevents moisture travelling along the tie to the steel frame.
M5. Veneer ties must be compatible with Zincalume coated steel. Stainless steel brick ties and other more noble metals
must be electrically isolated from the steel framing.
M6. Type B flexible seismic-resistant veneer ties must be installed for earthquake actions.
M7. For the serviceability limit state, the support framing for brick veneer walls is typically designed to H/360 to be
consistent with Autoclaved Aerated Concrete and Fibre Cement cladding. AS 3700 Masonry Structures - Clause
7.6.2(b) requires a maximum deflection of H/300.

Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) Walls

A1. Top-hats shall be designed to provide an even distribution of lateral load on the wall framing.
A2. The steel wall frame must not bear weight from the AAC panels, including over openings and be supported directly
on the slab or on shelf angles (as per the manufacturer’s literature).
A3. Top-hats to be spaced at maximum 600mm intervals above all openings for AAC walls.
