SECTION 09 28 13

CEMENT BOARD CEILINGS

PART 1 GENERAL

To be read with Division 1 - General Requirements, Conditions of Contract, all


related Technical Specifications and associated drawings of this Contract.

1.1 DESCRIPTION

A. Work of this section as indicated on the drawings and specified herein,


pertains to the fabricating, furnishing and installing of cement board
ceilings at exterior balconies, associated accessories and suspension
systems.

1.2 RELATED SECTIONS

A. This schedule is intended to be used as a helpful indication of the


related sections within the Project Specifications. It is not necessarily
comprehensive or complete and it is the Contractors responsibility to
ascertain all applicable sections required to understand the full scope
of work intended.

1. Section 09 22 00 : Metal Support Assemblies.


2. Section 09 21 13 : Gypsum Board Ceilings.

1.3 REFERENCES

A. The minimum standards for products specified in this section shall be


including as under but not limited to the following. Except as otherwise
specified herein, perform work in accordance with specifications, codes
and standards cited therein, and their latest editions, revisions,
applicable addenda and supplements. Where there is conflict between
the referenced standards the most stringent of the
conditions/requirements shall be applicable.

1. C 473, Test Methods for Physical Testing of Gypsum Panel
Products.
2. C 1186, Standard specifications for flat fiber cement sheets
3. C 1325, Specification for Fiber-Mat Reinforced Non-Asbestos
Cement Interior Substrate Sheets.
4. C 1002, Specification for Steel Drill screws for the Application
of Gypsum Panel Products or Metal Plaster Bases.
5. D 2394, Methods for Simulated Service Testing of Wood and
Wood-Based Finish Flooring.

1. BS EN 13964, Suspended ceilings. Requirements and test


methods
D. All applicable local codes, regulations, etc of Authorities having
Jurisdiction.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Submit the following under provisions of Division 1 - General


Requirements:

1. Literature: Manufacturer's product data sheets, specifications,


performance data, physical properties for each item furnished
hereunder.
2. Shop drawings: Details of any special conditions.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Applicator, with a minimum of three (3) years documented experience


demonstrating previously successful work of the type specified herein.

1.6 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. Deflection Criteria: Cement board suspended ceilings shall be


designed for deflection not exceeding 1/360 of the distance between
supports.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Deliver materials in original packages, containers or bundles bearing


brand name and identification of manufacturer or supplier.

B. Store materials inside under cover and in manner to keep them dry,
protected from weather, direct sunlight, surface contamination,
corrosion and damage from construction traffic and other causes.

1. Neatly stack board materials flat to prevent sagging. Cement


boards are heavy and can fall over causing injury and damage.

C. Handle board materials so to prevent damage to edges, ends and


surfaces.

1.8 SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING


A. Do not install cement board until all pipes, ducts, conduits, and other
such items which are to be enclosed thereby, have been permanently
installed, inspected and approved.
B. Coordinate the work of this Section with the respective trades
responsible for installing interfacing work, and ensure that the work
performed hereunder is acceptable to such trades for the installation of
their work.

1.9 WARRANTY
A. Contractor shall provide warranty covering the materials, workmanship
and installation against any defects for a period of (5) five years from
the date of Substantial Completion.

PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
A. Subject to compliance with the requirements of the specifications of
this Specification, the following manufacturers are acceptable.
1. Aqua Panels - Knauff
2. Aquaroc Fiber Cement board – Saint Gobain Gyproc
3. Approved equal

2.2 MATERIALS

A. Cement Board:

1. Backer Board: Cementitious, water durable, board; surfaced


with fiberglass reinforcing mesh on front and back; long
edges wrapped; and complying with ASTM C 1186. The ends
shall be square cut and edges reinforced and finished
smoothly. Shall provide a solid, dry base that can withstand
the extreme weathering effects of heat and wind.

b. Edges: Tapered.
c. Dry density: Approx 1150 kg/m².
d. Dry density: Approx 1150 kg/m².
e. Flexural strength: ≥ 6.2.
f. Thermal conductivity: To DIN 4108: 0.36 W/ (m·K).
g. Water vapour diffusion resistance: μ -19.
h. Building material class: Non-combustible: A1.
3. Fasteners:
a. Nails: 1-1/2-in. long, hot dipped galvanized, and in
accordance with FS FF-N-105B, Type 2, Style 20.
b. Screws: Hi-Lo thread screws (No. 8) wafer head,
corrosion-resistant, 1-1/4 in. or 1-5/8 in. long, and
complying with ASTM C 1002.
c. Screws: Drill point screws (No. 8) wafer head,
corrosion-resistant, 1-1/4 in. or 1-5/8 in. long, and

complying with ASTM C 1002.


4. Joint Treatment:
a. Tape: Alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh tape intended
for use with cement board.
5. Bonding Materials:
a. Mortar: Dry-set portland cement mortar in accordance
with ANSI A118.1.
b. Mortar: Latex-portland cement mortar in accordance
with ANSI A118.4.
c. Adhesive: Organic adhesive in accordance with ANSI
A136.1, Type 1.
PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify that all items which are to be enclosed by Work of this Section,
have been permanently installed, inspected and approved.

B. Inspect framing and other substrates; verify that they are in proper
condition to receive the work of this Section.

C. Beginning of installation means acceptance of substrate and site


conditions.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. During the operation of cement board work, protect all wood, metal,
glass, flooring, and other finished materials against undue soilage and
damage by the exercise of reasonable care and precautions. Repair or
replace any work so damaged and soiled at no extra cost to the
Engineer.

3.3 INSTALLATION

A. Metal Framing - Suspended and Furred Ceilings:

1. Secure hangers to structural support by connecting directly to


structure.
2. Install metal ceiling framing per ASTM C754, and space main
runners at 4 feet (1219 mm) on center maximum.
3. Do not connect or suspend steel framing from ducts, pipes, or
conduit.
4. Keep hangers and braces 2 inches (51 mm) clear of ducts,
pipes, or conduits.
5. Sway-brace suspended steel framing with hangers used for
support.

6. Comply with local governing code requirements where


applicable.

B. Cement board - General:

1. Cement Board Application and Finishing Standards: Install and


finish cement board to comply with BS EN 13964 and ASTM C
840.
2. Install cement boards across framing in the manner which
minimizes the number of end-butt joints, and which will avoid
end joints in the central area of each ceiling. Stagger end joints
a minimum of 24 inches (610 mm).
3. Install exposed ceiling board with face side out. Do not install
imperfect, damaged, or damp boards. Butt boards together for a
light contact at edges and ends with not more than 1/16 inch
(1.5 mm) open space between boards. Do not force into place.

C. Accessories:

1. General: Where feasible, use the same fasteners to anchor trim


accessory flanges as required to fasten cement board to the
supports. Otherwise, fasten flanges to comply with
manufacturer's recommendations.
2. Install metal corner beads at external corners.
3. Install metal edge trim whenever edge of cement board would
otherwise be exposed or semi-exposed, except where plastic
trim is indicated on drawings. Provide type with face flange to
receive joint compound except where "U" bead (semi-finishing
type) is indicated.
4. Install cement board reveals where indicated on drawings.
5. Install control joints at locations indicated on drawings, or if not
indicated, at spacing and locations required by referenced
cement board application and finish standard, and approved by
the Engineer for visual effect.

3.4 JOINT TREATMENT

A. General:

1. Inspect areas to be joint treated, verifying that the cement board


fits snugly against supporting framework.
2. In areas where joint treatment and compound finishing will be
performed, maintain a temperature recommended by the
manufacturer prior to commencing the treatment and until joint
and finishing compounds have dried.
3. Apply the joint treatment and finishing compound by machine or
hand tool.

4. Provide a minimum drying time of 24 hours between coats, with


additional drying time in poorly ventilated areas.
3.5 TOLERANCES
A. Install board ceilings with a maximum variation from true flatness of 3
mm per 3 m, non-cumulative.
3.6 CLEANING
A. Daily clean work areas by sweeping and disposing of debris, scraps,
and deposits of compound and fill.
B. After completion of the work of this Section, remove equipment, and
clean all wall, partition, and floor areas free from deposits of plaster, fill,
and other materials installed under this Section.
