SECTION 07550

PROTECTED MEMBRANE ROOFING

PART 1 - GENERAL

1. 1 SUMMARY

A. Provide protected "insulated roof membrane assembly" (IRMA) where indicated on


the Drawings, as specified herein, and as needed for a complete and proper
installation.

B. Related work:

1. Documents affecting work of this Section include, but are not necessarily
limited to, General Conditions, Supplementary Conditions, and Sections in
Division 1 of these Specifications.
2. Section 01421: Roofing inspection services.
3. Section 07600: Flashing and sheet metal.

1.2 SUBMITTALS

A. Comply with pertinent provisions of Section 01340.

B. Product data: Within 60 calendar days after the Contractor has received the Owner's
Notice to Proceed, submit:

1. Materials list of items proposed to be provided under this Section;


2. Manufacturer's specifications and other data needed to prove compliance with
the specified requirements;
3. Manufacturer's recommended installation procedures which, when approved
by the Architect, will become the basis for accepting or rejecting actual
installation procedures used on the Work.

1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Use adequate numbers of skilled workmen who are thoroughly trained and
experienced in the necessary crafts and who are completely familiar with the
specified requirements and the methods needed for proper performance of the
work of this Section.

B. Use a subcontractor approved in writing by the manufacturer of the approved


roofing system.

C. Cooperate as required in performance of the specified inspecting and testing.

1.4 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Comply with pertinent provisions of Section 01620.

B. Storage of materials:

1. Stand roll goods on end, and store on a clean floor to keep ends of rolls free
from foreign matter.
2. Store roofing materials in a dry place, on raised platforms, and cover with
waterproof tarpaulins, inside or in closed vans, protected from the sun and the
weather.
3. Store cartons, insulation, and drums of bitumen on raised level platforms, and
protect them from weather with waterproof tarpaulins.
4. Store solvents, emulsions, and coatings in a cool, dry area.
5. Keep lids tightly sealed on all emulsions, cut back adhesives, and flashing
cements.

1.5 WARRANTY

A. Upon completion of the Work and as a condition of its acceptance, deliver to the
Architect two copies of the following "Warranty and Maintenance Agreement,"
signed by the Contractor and the roofing subcontractor.

1. The undersigned hereby propose, and upon execution of this document by the
Owner, agree for a period of five years after Substantial Completion of the
Work to make immediate repairs as required to stop leaks or correct defects in
the work of this Section, within 24 hours after receipt of notice from the
Owner by telephone, telegram, or letter; and further agree to make such
repairs without reference to or consideration of the cause or nature of such
leaks or defects.
2. Repairs required within the stated period will be provided without cost to the
Owner; except that repairs required consequent to an act of God, abuse,
alterations, or failure of the substrata or the supporting structure (other than
caused by defects in the work of this Section) will be paid for by the Owner
promptly upon completion of the repair in each instance.
3. Repairs completed at Owner's cost shall be in- voiced to the Owner at
prevailing rates, and shall include an itemized breakdown of quantities plus
unit cost for labor and materials, and shall include not more than 15% markup
for overhead and profit.
4. This Warranty and Maintenance Agreement, and the enforcement of its
provisions, shall not deprive the Owner of any action, right, or remedy
otherwise available to him."

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS

A. Dow Chemical, USA, 2020 Dow Center, Midland, Michigan 48640.

2.2 MATERIALS

A. Buildup roof membrane over steel deck (Dow IRMA Specification 5.33 dated
December 1977).

1. Gypsum board:
a. Comply with ASTM C36, type X, 5/8" thick.
2. Adhesives:

a. Cold-applied roof insulation adhesive: (1) Comply with ASTM


D2822.
b. Hot steep asphalt adhesive: (1) Comply with ASTM D312.
3. Fasteners:
a. Provide "Lexsuco Corp." clips and discs, or provide "Berry fast
Corp." nails.
4. Steep asphalt:
a. Comply with ASTM D312, type III, with 190 degree F softening
point.
5. Felts:
a. Comply with ASTM D226, 15 lb weight.

B. Insulation:

1. Provide "Styrofoam RM" manufactured by Dow Chemical, Inc., 3-1/2" thick,


complying with Fed Spec HH-I-524b, type II, class B.

C. Ballast stabilizing fabric:

1. Provide "Confil D-689" manufactured by International Paper Company, 220


East 42nd Street, New York City 10017.

D. Top covering:

1. Provide 3/4" stone or gravel ballast with not more than 10% fines smaller
than 1/2", in source and gradation as approved by Dow Chemical, USA.
E. Flashing system:

1. Cant strips:
a. Comply with ASTM C208, class C, 4" x 4".
2. Asphalt primer:
a. Comply with ASTM D41.
3. Reinforced asbestos flashing sheet:
a. Comply with ASTM D2626.
4. Asphalt felt:
a. Comply with ASTM.D26, 15 lb weight.
5. Plastic cement:
a. Comply with ASTM D2822.

F. Roof walkways:

1. Provide precast concrete pavers 8" x 16" x 1-1/2" minimum thickness, but in
thickness equal to thickness of gravel or stone top covering as required.

2.3 OTHER MATERIALS

A. Provide other materials, not specifically described but required for a complete and
proper installation, as selected by the Contractor subject to the approval of the
Architect.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 SURFACE CONDITIONS

A. Examine the areas and conditions under which work of this Section will be
performed. Correct conditions detrimental to timely and proper completion of the
Work. Do not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.

3.2 INSTALLATION, GENERAL

A. Prior to start of installation; attend the meeting required under Section 01421 of these
Specifications, and reach agreement on procedures to be followed.

B. Verify that substrata are dry, smooth, clean, and free from sharp projections and
depressions, properly graded to outlets, and that metal fittings are in proper place
prior to start of roofing installation.

C. Verify that bitumen kettle has a thermometer in good working order.

3.3 INSTALLATION

A. Gypsum board:

1. Apply the approved adhesive to the steel deck, and immediately install the
approved gypsum board.
2. Around the perimeter of the roof, at a distance of 48" in from the roof edge,
install the approved fasteners at the rate of one fastener and disc per two sqft.

B. Cant strips:

1. Install the approved cant strips in angles of intersection between roof deck
and vertical walls and curbs.
2. Embed the cant strips in hot asphalt.
3. Fit the cant strips flush at ends and to walls and curbs; miter corners.

C. Buildup roof membrane:

1. Starting at the low point of the roof:


a. Uniformly mop the surface of the gypsum board with the approved
steep asphalt at a rate of 25 lbs per 100 sq ft.
b. While the asphalt is hot, embed three plies of the approved felt
shingle fashion, lapping each sheet 24-2/3".
c. Ensure all plies are completely embedded in the asphalt.
2. Do not leave the felts or gypsum board exposed to the weather.
3. Do not apply more gypsum board or felts than can be covered completely
with finished roofing in one day.

D. Complete the installation of flashing in each area prior to installing insulation,


complying in all respects with the manufacturers' recommendations as approved by
the Architect.

E. Pitch pockets:

1. Using the approved flashing cement, attach the flange to the surface of the
membrane.
2. Over the flange apply alternate mopping of two reinforcing plies of felt in a
manner such that the first extends at least 3" beyond the outer edge of the
flange and the second extends at least 6" beyond the outer edge of the flange.
3. Fill the pan flush to the top with the specified flashing cement.

F. Insulation:

1. Uniformly mop the surface of the membrane with the approved hot steep
asphalt at a rate of 45 lbs per 100 sq ft.
2. After the asphalt has cooled to a temperature providing a good bond, but not
so hot as to melt the insulation:
a. Install the specified insulation boards, channel-side down, with closed
joints and staggered ends.
b. Permit no opening between insulation boards more than 3/8".
3. Install the insulation to within 1/4" to 3/4" of cant strips and projections.

G. Ballast stabilizing fabric:

1. Loosely place the approved fabric over the insulation.


2. Do not bond or mechanically attach the fabric to the insulation.
3. Comply with pertinent details of the manufacturer as approved in advance by
the Architect.

H. Roof walkways:

1. Where indicated on the Drawings or otherwise required for access over the
roof, install the specified pavers directly on top of the stabilizing fabric.
2. Install the pavers loose, without adhesive, and tightly butt the edges.
3. Hold pavers in position until gravel or stone covering has been installed.
4. Install the gravel or stone top covering flush with top of the pavers.

I. covering:

1. Immediately after installation of fabric and required walkway pavers, install


the approved gravel or stone top covering at a rate of 1000 lbs per 100 sq ft in
a uniform dispersion.
2. Install the top covering loose, without adhesive or asphalt.
3. Top covering need not be dry, and may be installed in any weather.

3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. During progress of the work of this Section, make visual inspections as necessary
and verify that:

1. All materials used comply with the specified requirements


2. All materials are properly stored and handled.
3. Bitumen kettles are maintained at proper temperature;
4. Bitumen are applied uniformly without skips or voids, and in the proper
quantity.

5. The proper number and types of plies are installed, with the specified
overlaps.
6. The proper number, type, and spacing of fasteners are used. Associated
flashings and sheet metal are installed in a timely manner in accordance with
the specified requirements;
7. All elements of the work of this Section are completed on the same day and not
installed in phases.

B. The Owner reserves the right to require test cuts to be made in the installed roof
membrane.

1. When so directed by the Architect, make such test cuts in dimension of 4" x
42", at right angles to length of plies, and only at locations where so directed
by the Architect.
2. Provide temporary protection at the site of the test cuts as needed to prevent
penetration of water until repairs are made or a new roof system is installed.
3. Upon approval of the test cut sample, immediately repair the site of the test
cut to the same degree of protection as is provided by the roofing system.
