PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 INSPECTION
A. Verify that building framing or backing components are ready to receive work.
3.2 PREPARATION
A. Concrete-to-masonry and masonry-to-masonry interfaces shall be free from mortar, dirt, mud, dust, oil,
B. Take all necessary precautions against mortar dropping into cavity spaces or plugging weep holes or
core vents. Mortar droppings shall be cleaned out of cavity spaces.
C. Take all suitable precautions against visible mortar stains at exposed surfaces.
A. Control joints shall be located as shown on the Drawings. Control joints recommended by the
manufacturer and not shown on the Drawings shall be subject to prior review by the EOR.
B. Mortar shall be mechanically mixed in a mortar mixer for a minimum of 5 minutes, but not more than
10 minutes after all the materials have been placed in the mixer and there is a uniform distribution of
materials. Hand mixing is not permitted.
C. Mortar at the time the masonry placement shall be in a plastic consistency necessary to provide proper
bond. Mortar shall be retempered one time with water as required to maintain the proper consistency.
D. Mortar shall be placed within 2 1/2 hours after initial mixing. Mortar not retempered for 1 hour, has
taken its initial set, has been contaminated by foreign materials, or has fallen on the ground or
scaffolding shall not be placed.
E. Masonry veneer shall be laid up plumb, true to line, and with level courses within the allowable
tolerances as defined in ACI 530.1.
F. Masonry veneer shall be laid-up with a minimum 1-1/2-inch cavity space between the veneer and the
structural backup.
G. Proper masonry units shall be used with a minimum of cutting. Where cutting of masonry units is
necessary, it shall be by saw cutting and neat and accurate to the shape required.
H. Masonry units at the time of placement shall be sound, dry, clean, and free from cracks and other
defects that would affect the proper placement of the unit or the strength and performance of the veneer.
Wet masonry units shall not be placed.
I. Wetting of the units prior to, during, or after placement shall be subject to prior review by the EOR
except as allowed for hot weather masonry construction.
K. Mortar joints shall be straight and uniform in thickness and with full mortar coverage on all faces. Deep
or excessive furrowing of mortar joints and buttering corners of joints is not permitted.
L. Masonry units shall be placed with sufficient pressure to provide proper bond at all joints. No horizontal
adjustment to occur once block is placed.
N. All mortar joints shall be tooled with a round bar to a slightly concave shape. Joints at masonry to be
covered shall be tooled flush.
P. Step back unfinished work for placing subsequent work. The use of toothing shall be subject to prior
review by the EOR.
Q. Masonry accessories shall be located and installed so as to conform accurately to the Drawings within
the allowable tolerances.
R. Install anchors, weep holes or core vents, control joint filler, and other accessories to be built into the
masonry as the wall is laid up.
S. Unless otherwise shown on drawings, anchors shall be installed between the masonry veneer and the
structural backup at top and bottom of wall and at 16 inches by 16 inches horizontal by vertical and
within 8 inches maximum of ends, corners, and openings.
T. Anchors and ties shall have 2-inch minimum embedment into masonry veneer.
U. Shelf angles specified in Section 05_50_00_00(05500), over openings shall extend 4 inches minimum
into the masonry each side.
V. Weep vents shall be installed at 24 inches on center at the bottom of walls and, above shelf angles and
through-wall flashings, specified in Section 07_62_00_00(07620), unless noted otherwise.
W. Anchors and ties shall be attached to the backup studs through the exterior wall sheathing. Attaching
anchors and ties to sheathing only is not permitted.

Specification Section 07_90_00_00(07900).
Y. The position of all pipes and conduits encased in or passing through masonry veneer shall be subject to
prior review by the EOR.
Z. Pipes and conduits passing through masonry veneer shall pass through sleeved holes sized 1 inch in
diameter larger than the outside diameter of the pipe and conduit. Sleeves shall extend full thickness of
