1.4 COORDINATION

A. Coordinate Work of this Section with other Sections of Work in forming and placing openings,
slots, reglets, recesses, sleeves, bolts, anchors, other inserts, and components of other Work.

1.5 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

A. Design, engineer, and construct formwork, shoring, and bracing in accordance with ACI 301
and ACI 318 to conform to design and applicable Town and State code requirements to achieve
concrete shape, line and dimension as indicated on Drawings.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Perform Work in accordance with ACI 347, ACI 301, ACI 318.

B. For wood products furnished for Work of this Section, comply with AF&PA.

C. Perform Work in accordance with NYSDOT Standard Specifications, latest revision.

1.7 QUALIFICATIONS

A. Design formwork under direct supervision of Professional Engineer experienced in design of


this Work and licensed in State of New York.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 WOOD FORM MATERIALS

A. Form Materials: At discretion of Contractor.

B. Lumber Forms:
1. Application: Use for edge forms and unexposed finish concrete.
2. Boards: 6 inches or 8 inches in width, ship lapped or tongue and groove, “Standard”
Grade Douglas Fir, conforming to WCLIB Standard Grading Rules for West Coast
Lumber. Surface boards on four sides.

C. Plywood Forms:
1. Application: Use for exposed finish concrete.
2. Forms: Conform to PS 1; full size 4 x 8 feet panels; each panel labeled with grade
trademark of APA/EWA.
3. Plywood for Surfaces to Receive Membrane Waterproofing: Minimum of 5/8 inch thick;
APA/EWA “B-B Plyform Structural I Exterior” grade.
4. Plywood where “Smooth Finish” is required, as indicated on Drawings: APA/EWA “HD
Overlay Plyform Structural I Exterior” grade, minimum of 3/4 inch thick.

2.2 PREFABRICATED FORMS

A. Furnish materials in accordance with NYSDOT Standard Specifications, latest revision.

B. Preformed Steel Forms: Minimum 16 gage matched, tight fitting, stiffened to support weight of
concrete without deflection detrimental to tolerances and appearance of finished surfaces.

C. Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic Forms: Matched, tightly fitted, and stiffened to support weight of
concrete without deflection detrimental to tolerances and appearance of finished concrete
surfaces.

D. Tubular Column Type: Round, spirally wound laminated fiber, wood, or glass fiber material,
surface treated with release agent, non-reusable, sizes as indicated on Drawings.

E. Steel Forms: Sheet steel, suitably reinforced, and designed for particular use indicated on
Drawings.

F. Form Liners: Smooth, durable, grainless, and non-staining hardboard unless otherwise indicated
on Drawings.

G. Framing, Studding and Bracing: Stud or No. 3 structural light framing grade.

2.3 FORMWORK ACCESSORIES

A. Form Ties: Removable or Snap-off type, galvanized metal, free of defects capable of leaving
holes larger than 1 inch in concrete surface.

B. Spreaders: Standard, non-corrosive metal form clamp assembly, of type acting as spreaders and
leaving no metal within 1 inch of concrete face. Wire ties, wood spreaders or through bolts are
not permitted.

C. Form Anchors and Hangers:


1. Do not use anchors and hangers exposed concrete leaving exposed metal at concrete
surface.
2. Symmetrically arrange hangers supporting forms from structural steel members to
minimize twisting or rotation of member.
3. Penetration of structural steel members is not permitted.

D. Form Release Agent: Colorless mineral oil that will not stain concrete, or absorb moisture, or
impair natural bonding or color characteristics of coating intended for use on concrete.

E. Bituminous Joint Filler: Comply with ASTM D1751.

F. Nails, Spikes, Lag Bolts, Through Bolts, Anchorages: Size, strength, and character to maintain
formwork in place while placing concrete.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify lines, levels, and centers before proceeding with formwork. Verify that dimensions agree
with construction plans.

B. When formwork is placed after reinforcement resulting in insufficient concrete cover over
reinforcement, before proceeding, request instructions from Engineer.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Earth Forms:
1. Earth forms are only permitted if authorized by the Engineer.
2. Trench earth forms neatly, accurately, and at least 2 inches wider than footing widths
indicated on Drawings.
3. Trim sides and bottom of earth forms.
4. Construct wood edge strips at top of each side of trench to secure reinforcing and to
prevent trench from sloughing.
5. Form sides of footings where earth sloughs.
6. Tamp earth forms firm and clear them of debris and loose material before depositing
concrete.

B. Formwork General:
1. Provide top form for sloped surfaces steeper than 1.5 horizontal to 1 vertical to hold
shape of concrete during placement, unless it can be demonstrated that top forms can be
omitted.
2. Construct forms to correct shape and dimensions, mortar-tight, braced, and of sufficient
strength to maintain shape and position under imposed loads from construction
operations.
3. Camber forms where necessary to produce level finished soffits unless indicated
otherwise on Drawings.
4. Carefully verify horizontal and vertical positions of forms. Correct misaligned or
misplaced forms before placing concrete.
5. Complete wedging and bracing before placing concrete.
6. Erect formwork, shoring, and bracing to achieve design requirements according to ACI
301 and ACI 318.

C. Form Removal:
1. Do not remove forms or bracing until concrete has gained sufficient strength to carry its
own weight and imposed loads, and removal has been approved by Engineer.
2. Loosen forms carefully; do not wedge pry bars, hammers, or tools against finish concrete
surfaces scheduled for exposure to view.
3. Store removed forms in manner that surfaces to be in contact with fresh concrete will not
be damaged. Discard damaged forms.
4. Leave forms in place for minimum number of days according to ACI 347.
5. Form Release Agent:
a. Apply according to manufacturer instructions.
b. Apply prior to placement of reinforcing steel, anchoring devices, and embedded
items.
c. Do not apply form release agent where concrete surfaces are indicated to receive
special finishes or applied coverings that are affected by agent. Soak inside
surfaces of untreated forms with clean water. Keep surfaces coated prior to
placement of concrete.
6. Form Cleaning:
a. Clean forms as erection proceeds to remove foreign matter within forms.
b. Clean formed cavities of debris prior to placing concrete.
c. Flush with water or use compressed air to remove remaining foreign matter.
d. During cold weather, remove ice and snow from within forms. Do not use de-icing
salts. Do not use water to clean out forms, unless formwork and concrete

construction proceed within heated enclosure; use compressed air or other dry
method to remove foreign matter.
7. Reuse and Coating of Forms: Thoroughly clean forms and reapply form coating before
each reuse. For exposed work, do not reuse forms with damaged faces or edges. Apply
form coating to forms in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications. Do not coat
forms for concrete indicated to receive “scored finish”. Apply form coatings before
placing reinforcing steel.

D. Forms for Smooth Finish Concrete:


1. Use steel, plywood, or lined-board forms.
2. Use clean and smooth plywood and form liners, uniform in size, and free from surface
and edge damage capable of affecting resulting concrete finish.
3. Install form lining with close-fitting square joints between separate sheets without
springing into place.
4. Use full-sized sheets of form liners and plywood wherever possible.
5. Tape joints to prevent protrusions in concrete.
6. Apply forming and strip wood forms in a manner to protect corners and edges.
7. Level and continue horizontal joints.
8. Keep wood forms wet until stripped.

E. Framing, Studding, and Bracing:


1. Maximum Spacing of Studs:
a. Boards: Maximum 16 inches o.c.
b. Plywood: 12 inches o.c.
2. Size framing, bracing, centering, and supporting members for sufficient strength to
maintain shape and position under imposed loads from construction operations.
3. Construct beam soffits of material minimum 2 inches thick.
4. Distribute bracing loads over base area on which bracing is erected.
5. When placed on ground, protect against undermining, settlement, and accidental impact.

F. Form Anchors and Hangers:


1. Do not use anchors and hangers leaving exposed metal at concrete surface.
2. Symmetrically arrange hangers supporting forms from structural-steel members to
minimize twisting or rotation of member.
3. Penetration of structural-steel members is not permitted.

G. Inserts, Embedded Parts, and Openings:

1. Install formed openings for items to be embedded in or passing through concrete Work.
2. Locate and set in place items required to be cast directly into concrete.
3. Coordinate with Work of other sections in forming and placing openings, slots, reglets,
recesses, sleeves, bolts, anchors, other inserts, and components of other Work.
4. Install accessories straight, level, and plumb, and ensure that items are not disturbed
during concrete placement.
5. Provide temporary ports or openings in formwork where required to facilitate cleaning
and inspection. Locate openings at bottom of forms to allow flushing water to drain.
6. Close temporary openings with tight-fitting panels, flush with inside face of forms, and
neatly fitted such that joints will not be apparent in exposed concrete surfaces.

H. Form Ties:
1. Provide sufficient strength and quantity to prevent spreading of forms.

2. Place ties at least 1 inch away from finished surface of concrete.


3. Leave inner rods in concrete when forms are stripped.
4. Space form ties equidistant, symmetrical, and aligned vertically and horizontally unless
indicated otherwise on Drawings.

I. Arrange formwork to allow proper erection sequence and to permit form removal without
damage to concrete.

J. Construction Joints:
1. Install surfaced pouring strip where construction joints intersect on exposed surfaces to
provide straight line at joints.
2. Just prior to subsequent concrete placement, remove strip and tighten forms to conceal
shrinkage.
3. Show no overlapping of construction joints. Construct joints to present same appearance
as butted plywood joints.
4. Arrange joints in continuous line straight, true, and sharp.

K. Embedded Items:
1. Make provisions for pipes, sleeves, anchors, inserts, reglets, anchor slots, nailers, water
stops, and other features.
2. Do not embed wood or uncoated aluminum in concrete.
3. Obtain installation and setting information for embedded items furnished under other
Sections.
4. Securely anchor embedded items in correct location and alignment prior to placing
concrete.
5. Ensure that conduits and pipes, including those made of coated aluminum, meet
requirements of ACI 318 regarding size and location limitations.

L. Openings for Items Passing through Concrete:


1. Frame openings in concrete where indicated on Drawings. Establish exact locations,
sizes, and other conditions required for openings and attachment of Work specified under
other Sections.
2. Coordinate Work to avoid cutting and patching of concrete after placement.
3. Perform cutting and repairing of concrete required as result of failure to provide required
openings.

M. Screeds:
1. Set screeds and establish levels for tops of and finish on concrete slabs.
2. Slope slabs to drain where required or as indicated on Drawings.
3. Before depositing concrete, remove debris from space to be occupied by concrete and
thoroughly wet forms; remove freestanding water.

N. Screed Supports:
1. For concrete over waterproof membranes and vapor retarder membranes, use cradle-,
pad-, or base-type screed supports that will not puncture membrane.
2. Staking through membrane is not permitted.

O. Cleanouts and Access Panels:


1. Provide removable cleanout sections or access panels at bottoms of forms to permit
inspection and effective cleaning of loose dirt, debris, and waste material.

2. Clean forms and surfaces against which concrete is to be placed. Remove chips, sawdust,
and other debris. Thoroughly blow out forms with compressed air just before concrete is
placed.

3.3 TOLERANCES

A. Tolerances: Construct formwork to produce completed concrete surfaces within construction


tolerances according to ACI 117.

3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Inspect erected formwork, shoring, and bracing to ensure that Work complies with formwork
design and that supports, fastenings, wedges, ties, and items are secure.

B. Notify Engineer after placement of reinforcing steel in forms but prior to placing concrete.

C. Schedule concrete placement to permit formwork inspection before placing concrete.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 REINFORCEMENT

A. Reinforcing Steel: Comply with ASTM A615. Grade 60, deformed.

B. Welded Plain-Steel Wire Fabric: Comply with ASTM A185, fabricated from as-drawn steel
wire into flat sheets.

C. Epoxy Coated Reinforcement Bars: Comply with ASTM A775; with ASTM A615, Grade 60
bars.

2.2 FABRICATION

A. Fabricate concrete reinforcement in accordance with ACI 318.

B. Form standard hooks for as indicated on Shop Drawings.

C. Form reinforcement bends with minimum diameters in accordance with ACI 318.

D. Fabricate column reinforcement with offset bends at reinforcement splices.

E. Form spiral column reinforcement from minimum 3/8 inch diameter continuous plain bar or
wire.

F. Form ties and stirrups from following:


1. Bars For bars No. 10 and Smaller: No. 3 deformed bars.

G. Weld reinforcement according to AWS D1.4.

H. Splicing: No splicing shall be accepted without prior approval from Engineer or their
representative in writing.

2.3 ACCESSORY MATERIALS

A. Tie Wire: Minimum 16 gage annealed type.

B. Chairs, Bolsters, Bar Supports, and Spacers: Sized and shaped for strength and support of
reinforcement during concrete placement conditions.

C. Epoxy Coating Patching Material: Type as recommended by coating manufacturer.

2.4 SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL

A. Certificate of Compliance: When fabricator is approved by authorities having jurisdiction,


submit certificate of compliance indicating Work performed at fabricator's facility conforms to
Contract Documents.
1. Specified shop tests are not required for Work performed by approved fabricator.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION

A. Place, support, and secure reinforcement against displacement. Do not deviate from required
position beyond specified tolerance.

B. Do not weld crossing reinforcement bars for assembly except as permitted by Engineer or their
Representative.

C. Do not displace or damage vapor retarder.

D. Accommodate placement of formed openings.

E. Spacing: Space reinforcement bars with minimum clear spacing in accordance with ACI 318.
1. If bars are indicated in multiple layers, place upper bars directly above lower bars.

F. Install welded wire fabric in whole sheets as practicable, set on chairs or supports with tie wires
to hold a proper elevation. Lap adjoining pieces at least two full meshes, and lace splices with
wire. Offset laps of adjoining widths to prevent continuous laps in either direction.

G. Maintain minimum concrete cover around reinforcement in accordance with Drawings.

3.2 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Field inspection and testing will be performed by Owner’s testing laboratory in accordance with
ACI 318.

B. Provide unrestricted access to Work and cooperate with appointed inspection and/or testing
firm.

C. Reinforcement Inspection:
1. Placement Acceptance: Specified, and ACI 318, material requirements and specified
placement tolerances.
2. Welding: Inspect welds according to AWS D1.1.
3. Periodic Placement Inspection: Inspect for correct materials, fabrication, sizes, locations,
spacing, concrete cover, and splicing.

Unless noted otherwise, compressive strength of 4,000 psi (at 28 days) shall be prepared.

B. Limit water-soluble, chloride-ion content in hardened concrete to 0.15 percent by weight of


cement.

C. Admixtures:
1. Include admixture types and quantities indicated in concrete mix designs only if approved
by Engineer.
2. Use accelerating admixtures in cold weather. Use of admixtures will not relax cold-
weather placement requirements.
3. Hot Weather: Use set-retarding admixtures.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify requirements for concrete cover over reinforcement.

B. Verify that anchors, seats, plates, reinforcement, and other items to be cast into concrete are
accurately placed, positioned securely, and will not interfere with placing concrete.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Prepare previously placed concrete by cleaning with steel brush and applying bonding agent.
Remove laitance, coatings, and unsound materials.

B. In locations where new concrete is doweled to existing work, drill holes in existing concrete,
insert steel dowels, and pack solid with non-shrink grout.

C. Remove debris and ice from formwork, reinforcement, and concrete substrates.

D. Remove water from areas receiving concrete before concrete is placed.

3.3 INSTALLATION

A. Placing Concrete:

1. Place concrete in accordance with ACI 301 and ACI 318.


2. Notify testing laboratory and Architect/Engineer minimum 24 hours prior to
commencement of operations.
3. Ensure reinforcement, inserts, embedded parts, formed expansion and contraction joints
are not disturbed during concrete placement.
4. Exterior Sealer: Apply two coats of specified sealer to exterior concrete slabs, walks,
landings, steps, walls, ramps, and curbs according to manufacturer’s direction. Maintain
continuity of coating and repair damage during curing period.
5. Joint Filler:
a. Separate slabs on grade from vertical surfaces with 1/2 inch thick joint filler.
b. Place joint filler in slab pattern placement sequence. Set top to required elevations.
Secure to resist movement by wet concrete.
c. Extend joint filler from bottom of slab to within 1/4 of finished slab surface.
6. Joint Devices:
a. Install construction joint devices in coordination with slab pattern placement
sequence. Set top to required elevations. Secure to resist movement by wet
concrete.

b. Install joint device anchors, maintaining correct position to allow joint cover to be
flush with floor and/or wall finish.
c. Install joint covers in longest practical length when adjacent construction activity
is complete.
7. Deposit concrete at final position in a continuous operation between transverse joints. Do
not push or drag concrete into place or use vibrator or other method to move concrete into
place.
8. Consolidate concrete by mechanical vibrating equipment supplemented by hand-spading,
rodding, or tamping. Use equipment and procedures to consolidate concrete according to
recommendations in ACI 309R.
9. Maintain records of concrete placement, including date, location, quantity, air
temperature, and test samples taken.
10. Do not interrupt successive placement and do not permit cold joints to occur.
11. If specified, saw cut joints within 12 hours after placing. Use 3/16 inch thick blade, cut
into 1/4 depth of slab thickness.
12. Screed exterior slabs on grade level, maintaining surface flatness of minimum 1/4 inch in
1 ft.
13. Do not add water to concrete during delivery, at Project site, or during placement.
14. Cold weather placement: Comply with ACI 306.1.
15. Hot weather Placement: Place concrete according to recommendation in ACI 305R.

B. Concrete Finishing:

1. General: Wetting concrete surfaces during screeding, initial floating, or finishing


operations is strictly prohibited.

2. Float Finish: Begin Second floating operation when bleed-water sheen has disappeared
and the concrete surface has stiffened sufficiently to permit operations. Float surface with
power driven floats, or by hand floating if area is small or inaccessible to power units.
Finnish surfaces to true planes. Cut down high spots, and fill low spots. Refloat surface
immediately to uniform granular texture.

3. Medium Broom Finish: Apply nonslip medium broom finish to exterior concrete walks.
Immediately after float finishing, slightly roughen concrete surface by brooming with
fiber bristle broom, perpendicular to main traffic route. Coordinate required final finish
with Landscape Architect or Engineer prior to application.

C. Curing and Protection:

1. Immediately after placement, protect concrete from premature drying, excessively hot or
cold temperatures, and mechanical injury.
2. Protect concrete footings from freezing for minimum of five days.
3. Maintain concrete with minimal moisture loss at relatively constant temperature for
period as necessary for hydration of cement and hardening of concrete.

3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Field inspection and testing will be performed in accordance with ACI 318.

B. Provide free access to Work and cooperate with appointed firm.

C. Submit proposed mix design of each class of concrete to inspection and testing firm for review
prior to commencement of Work.

D. Concrete Inspections:
1. Continuous Placement Inspection: Inspect for proper installation procedures.
2. Periodic Curing Inspection: Inspect for specified curing temperature and procedures.

E. Strength Test Samples:


1. Sampling Procedures: Comply with ASTM C172.

2. Sample concrete and make one composite sample for every 100 cu. yd. or fraction thereof
each concrete mixture placed each day.
3. If volume of concrete for a class of concrete would provide less than five sets of
cylinders, take samples from five randomly selected batches, or from every batch if less
than five batches are used.

F. Field Testing:
1. Slump Test Method: Comply with ASTM C143; one test at point of placement for each
composite sample, but not less than one test for each day’s pour of each concrete mix.
Perform additional tests when concrete consistency appears to change.
2. Air Content Test Method: Comply with ASTM C231; pressure method for normal weight
concrete. ASTM C173, volumetric method, for structural lightweight concrete; one test
for each composite sample.
3. Temperature Test Method: Comply with ASTM C1064; one test hourly when air temp is
40 deg F and below and when 80 deg F and above, and one test for each set of
compressive-strength specimens.
4. Unit weight: Comply with ASTM C567, fresh unit weight of structural lightweight
concrete; one test for each composite sample, but not less than one test for each day’s
pour of each concrete mix.
5. Compression test specimens: ASTM C31; on set of five standard cylinders for each
compressive-strength test, unless otherwise indicated. Cylinders shall be molded and
stored for laboratory-cured test specimens unless field-cured test specimens are required.
a. Measure slump and temperature for each sample.
b. Measure air content in air-entrained concrete for each sample.

G. Cylinder Compressive Strength Testing:


1. Test Method: Comply with ASTM C39.
2. Test two field-cured specimens at 7 days and 28 days.
3. A compressive strength test shall average compressive strength from two specimens
obtained from the same composite sample and tested at age indicated.
4. Dispose of remaining cylinders if testing is not required.
5. When strength of field cured cylinders is less than 85% of companion laboratory cured
cylinders, current operations shall be evaluated and corrective procedures shall be
provided for protecting and curing in-place concrete.
6. Strength level of concrete will be considered satisfactory if averages of sets of three
consecutive compressive-strength test results equal or exceed specified compressive
strength and no individual compressive-strength test results falls below specified
compressive strength by more than 500 psi.

H. Test results shall be reported in writing to Engineer, manufacturer, and Contractor within 48
hours of testing.

I. Additional tests: At Contractor’s expense, testing agency shall make additional tests of the
concrete when test results indicate slump, air entrainment, concrete strengths or other
requirements have not been met, as directed by Engineer or their Representative.

J. Patching:
1. Allow Engineer to inspect concrete surfaces immediately upon removal of forms.
2. Excessive honeycombing or Embedded Debris in Concrete is not acceptable. Notify
Engineer upon discovery.
3. Patch imperfections as directed by Engineer.

K. Defective Concrete:
1. Description: Concrete not conforming to required lines, details, dimensions, tolerances,

1.7 AMBIENT CONDITIONS

2.2 APPLICATION EQUIPMENT

A. For application of crosswalks, intersections, parking spaces, stop lines, legends and other
miscellaneous items by walk behind stripers, hand spray or stencil trucks, apply with equipment
meeting requirements of this section. Do not use hand brushes or rollers.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION

A. Do not apply paint to concrete surfaces until concrete has cured for 28 days.

B. Agitate paint for 1 to 15 minutes prior to application to ensure even distribution of pigment.

C. Maintenance and Protection of Traffic:


1. Provide short-term traffic control as necessary.
2. Prevent interference with marking operations and prevent traffic on newly applied
markings before dry.

3.6 CLEANING

C. Barrier cones are satisfactory protection for materials being dried. If vehicle crosses a marking
and tracks it, or if splattering or overspray occurs, eradicate affected marking and resultant

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION

A. Install framework, fabric, accessories and gates in accordance with ASTM F567.

B. Set gate, posts plumb, in concrete footings with top of footing 1 inch above finish grade. Slope
top of concrete for water runoff.

C. Corner, Gate, Terminal, and Line Post Footing Depth Below Finish Grade: ASTM F567;
minimum 3.5 feet.

D. Brace each gate and corner post to adjacent line post with horizontal center brace rail and
diagonal truss rods. Install brace rail one bay from end and gate posts.

E. Install top rail through line post tops and splice with 6 inch long rail sleeves.

F. Install center and bottom brace rail on corner gate leaves.

G. Place fabric on outside of posts and rails.

H. Do not stretch fabric until concrete foundation has cured 28 days.

I. Stretch fabric between terminal posts or at intervals of 100 feet maximum, whichever is less.

J. Position bottom of fabric 1 1/2 inches above finished grade.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify site conditions and foundation soil bearing capacity after excavation.

B. Verify with Engineer base of undercut, if any, to complete necessary removal of unsuitable
material and replacement of material with coarse aggregate.

3.2 DEWATERING

A. Furnish, install, operate and maintain satisfactory dewatering systems as required to maintain
excavation in dry and workable condition. Provide equipment and materials, and continue as
long as necessary.

B. Lower ground water levels within excavation areas 12 inches minimum below bottom of
excavations.

C. Place dewatering system in operation before excavating below ground water level. Operate
system continuously, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, until construction work below existing
ground water levels is complete.

3.3 EXCAVATION AND FOOTER

A. Provide temporary support of excavation when required in accordance with Section 312316,
“Excavation” and shop drawings.

B. Excavate to indicated lines and elevations in accordance with Section 312316, “Excavation”.

C. Grade foundation for units level.

3.4 DRAINAGE AND BACKFILL

A. Set geotextile fabric as indicated in drawings and as directed by the manufacturer.

B. Place and compact soil backfill material above free draining backfill from top of wall to
finished ground in accordance with Section 312323, “Fill”.

C. Maintain optimum or less moisture content of backfill materials to attain required compaction
density.

D. Allow no heavy compaction equipment within 3 feet of back of wall fascia.

E. Seed and mulch finished ground from wall to existing grade in accordance with Section 329219,

3.5 INSTALLATION OF MODULAR UNITS

A. Assemble units as shown on shop drawings and in accordance with manufacturer's


recommendations.

B. Handle and erect concrete units carefully so as to avoid damage to units. Replace any members

A. Mulching Material: Oat or wheat straw, free from weeds, foreign matter detrimental to plant

B. Fertilizer: For the establishment of temporary or permanent vegetative cover shall be in


compliance with the latest NYSDEC regulations. A soil test prior to fertilizer application is
recommended.

C. Lime: ASTM C602, Class T agricultural limestone containing a minimum 80 percent calcium
carbonate equivalent.

D. Water: Clean, fresh and free of substances or matter capable of inhibiting vigorous growth of
grass.

2.3 SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL

A. Provide recommendation for fertilizer and lime application rates for specified seed mix as result
of testing.

B. Testing is not required when recent tests and certificates are available for imported topsoil.
Submit these test results to testing laboratory. Indicate, by test results, information necessary to
determine suitability.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify prepared soil base is ready to receive the Work of this section.

B. Any area of soil compaction shall be scarified prior to seed application.

3.2 FERTILIZING

A. Apply lime at application rate recommended by soil analysis. Work lime into top 6 inches of
soil.

B. Apply fertilizer at application rate recommended by soil analysis.

C. Apply after smooth raking of topsoil.

D. Do not apply fertilizer at same time or with same machine used to apply seed.

E. Mix fertilizer thoroughly into upper 2 inches of topsoil.

F. Lightly water soil to aid dissipation of fertilizer. Irrigate top level of soil uniformly.

3.3 SEEDING

A. Apply seed at a minimum rate of 150 lbs. per acre evenly in two intersecting directions. Rake in
lightly.

B. Do not seed areas in excess of that which can be mulched on same day.

C. Planting Season: Between April 1 through May 31 and August 16 and October 15. If season
prevents the establishment of temporary or permanent seeding, exposed are to be stabilized with
mulch as indicated above.

D. Do not place immediately following rain, when ground is too dry, or when winds are over 12
mph.

E. Immediately following seeding and compacting, apply mulch to thickness of 1/8 inches.
Maintain clear of shrubs and trees.

F. Apply water with fine spray immediately after each area has been mulched. Saturate to 4 inches
of soil.

3.4 HYDROSEEDING

A. Apply fertilizer, mulch and seeded slurry with hydraulic seeder at a minimum seed rate of 150
lbs. per acre evenly in one pass.

B. After application, apply water with fine spray immediately after each area has been
hydroseeded. Saturate to 4 inches of soil and maintain moisture levels two to four inches.

3.5 SEED PROTECTION

A. Cover seeded slopes where grade is 3:1 or greater with erosion fabric. Roll fabric onto slopes
without stretching or pulling.

B. Lay fabric smoothly on surface, bury top end of each section in 6 inch deep excavated topsoil
trench. Overlap edges and ends of adjacent rolls minimum 12 inches. Backfill trench and rake
smooth, level with adjacent soil.

C. Secure outside edges and overlaps at 36 inch intervals with stakes.

D. Lightly dress slopes with topsoil to ensure close contact between fabric and soil.

E. At sides of ditches, lay fabric laps in direction of water flow. Lap ends and edges minimum 6
inches.

3.6 MAINTENANCE

A. Mow grass at regular intervals to maintain at maximum height of 2-1/2 inches . Do not cut more
than 1/3 of grass blade at each mowing. Perform first mowing when seedlings are 40 percent
higher than desired height.

B. Neatly trim edges and hand clip where necessary.

C. Immediately remove clippings after mowing and trimming. Do not let clippings lay in clumps.

D. Water to prevent grass and soil from drying out.

E. Control growth of weeds. Apply herbicides. Remedy damage resulting from improper use of
herbicides.

F. Immediately reseed areas showing bare spots.

G. Repair washouts or gullies.
