III-Discussion
Contemporary art is defined as the art of now. These are artwork that are produced in the present. It is difficult
to define the actual starting point of contemporary art since the present is in constant motion and what we might consider
as contemporary art today might not be true in the future. The classification encompasses the different disciplines of
human culture such as the visual arts, music, theater, film and etc. Contemporary art covers a broad and diverse content
that would be difficult to be sufficiently covered in one reference. Intended as a reaction to preceding modern art
movements, contemporary art is thought to have begun on the heels of Pop Art. In post-war Britain and America, Pop
Art was pioneered by artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. It is defined by an interest in portraying mass
culture and reimagining commercial products as accessible art. While the movement lasted roughly from the 1950s
through the early 1970s, it was reborn as Neo-Pop Art in the 1980s thanks to artists like Jeff Koons. So, contemporary
arts has a classification that encompasses the different disciplines of human culture such as the visual arts, music, theater,
film and etc. Contemporary arts cover a broad and diverse content that would be difficult to be sufficiently covered.
What is art?
Art is a diverse range of human activities in creating visual, auditory or performing artifacts (artworks), expressing
the author's imaginative, conceptual ideas, or technical skill, intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional
power. Other activities related to the production of works of art include the criticism of art, and the study of the history of
art.
The three classical branches of visual art are painting, sculpture and architecture. Music, theatre, film, dance, and
other performing arts, as well as literature and other media such as interactive media, are included in a broader definition
of the arts. Until the 17th century, art referred to any skill or mastery and was not differentiated from crafts or sciences. In
modern usage after the 17th century, where aesthetic considerations are paramount, the fine arts are separated and
distinguished from acquired skills in general, such as the decorative or applied arts.
Though there is no generally agreed definition of what constitutes art and ideas have changed over time. General
descriptions mention an idea of imaginative or technical skill stemming from human agency and creation. The nature of
art and related concepts, such as creativity and interpretation, are explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics.
Art is defined as the manifestation or use of the various creative disciplines such as literature and media arts but the most
familiar is visual and performing arts.
What is visual arts?
It is a product of human creativity and skill to express oneself. Visual arts are a term used to describe a wide
array of artistic disciplines that are appreciated primary though sight. The visual arts are art forms such as painting,
drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, filmmaking, design, crafts, and architecture.
Many artistic disciplines such as performing arts, conceptual art, textile arts also involve aspects of visual arts as well
as arts of other types.

1. Fine Arts
Fine arts are the artworks we readily associate with art. The term “fine arts” was first used to describe the art. The
term "fine art" refers to an art form practiced mainly for its aesthetic value and its beauty ("art for art's sake") rather than
its functional value. Fine art is rooted in drawing and design-based works such as painting, printmaking, and sculpture. It
is often contrasted with "applied art" and "crafts" which are both traditionally seen as utilitarian activities. Other non-
design-based activities regarded as fine arts, include photography and architecture, although the latter is best understood
as an applied art.
2. Fine Arts Brochure
To create a brochure, it shows at least five “5” of the different fine arts that are found in your community. Each
art form should have a picture and a caption explaining the artwork. The notion “art for art’s sake” arose at the turn of the
19th century, when artists grew increasingly more inclined to use art as a freedom of expression, rather than to document
and represent historical and cultural events. Complementing this notion, the term “fine art” was used to differentiate
works by artists who were the sole agent of creative expression from works that were created by commission,
or objects with utilitarian functions that fall into the category of craft or decorative art. Art influences society by
changing opinions, instilling values and translating experiences across space and time.
3. Decorative Arts
Decorative arts, also known as decorative crafts, are artworks that are both aesthetically and functional. While the
fine arts are primarily concerned with beauty and aesthetics. The decorative arts are not only beautiful but are useful as
well. Decorative art, any of those arts that are concerned with the design and decoration of objects that are chiefly prized
for their utility, rather than for their purely aesthetic qualities.
Example and most common decorative arts:
1. textile art
2. glassware
3. jewelry
4. furniture
5. earthenware
6. metal craft
7. interior design

What is performing arts?

This is art form in which artists make use of their voices, body movements or non-living objects to express
one’s emotions and feelings. Performing arts are meant to be performed in front of a live audience to provide
entertainment in theatres or opera houses, open air stages, on stages in tents such as circuses, and on the street.
Artists who participate in this form of art in front of an audience are called performers. They are usually more
known as actors, circus artists, comedians, dancers, magicians, musicians, and singers.
Performing arts are classified every so often into: theater, dance and music. Let us now have a short discussion
of each.
1.THEATER ARTS
Due to Covid-19 that has affected the whole world, including the Philippines in the first quarter of 2020, the
musical play “Ang Huling El Bimbo” became available for streaming on ABS-CBN’s Facebook and YouTube
pages for 48 hours as a fundraising activity for the victims of the pandemic. Originally, the production ran at the
Newport Performing Arts Theater at the Resorts World Manila in 2018 and a second run played in 2019. But
because everything was shutdown to help flatten the curve through social distancing, the play was cancelled. If
you were lucky to have watched this musical play, then theater arts is very clear to you.
Also known as play, this branch of performing arts involves the integration and combination of the visual and
performing arts. Theater Arts involves performers who act out stories that are based on reality or imagination
using a combination of speech, gesture, music, dance and visual arts as props to convey the story in front of an
audience.
Common examples include:
a. Mime b.Puppetry c.Tragedy d.opera
e. Musical Theater f. Traditional Theater
2. DANCE
Dance is defined as regulated or deliberated order of body movements. This form of performing arts typically
refers to human movements that have aesthetic value and are often performed with music accompaniment. Dance
comes in various forms and styles and the art of making dances is called choreography while the person who
practices this art is a choreographer.
Among the many styles of dance are:
a. Ballet b. Contemporary Dance c. Modern Dance d. Ballroom Dance e. Folk Dance
f. Traditional Dance g. Belly Dance h. Improvisational Dance i. Break Dance j. Hip-hop Dance

3. MUSIC
Who does not love music? A lot of you would agree that music changes our behavior as it affects our emotions.
Being a universal form of art, music is defined as the manipulation of sound and silence. This form of art
combines different elements such as pitch, rhythm, dynamics, timbre, and texture to create sound, which happens
to be the material of music. It is performed using musical sounds from various musical instruments, or using the
human voice with style or technique, or a combination of both. Further, a music can be improvised or planned,
and can occur in recorded formats or even performed live.
Common among the many genres of music are:
Art Music – is the umbrella term used to refer to music that stems from Western Classical Music. It is usually
presented and preserved through written musical notations that were developed in Europe.
Popular Music – generally refers to music that is accessible and commercially available to the public. It is
played or disseminated through different mass media outlets such as radios, television, and the Internet.
Traditional Music – are musical forms that are community and culturally based. It is diverse with one
community or group often having a different form from another. It is learned and preserved by passing it to one
generation to another through oral communication and actual performance

Contemporary art’s definition can be a tricky task. While its title is simplistic and straightforward, its modern-day
meaning is not as clear-cut. Fortunately, understanding what constitutes as “contemporary” is entirely possible once one
traces the concept’s history and explores its underlying themes.
What is Contemporary Arts?
It refers to art—namely, painting, sculpture, photography, installation, performance, and video art—
produced today. Though seemingly simple, the details surrounding this definition are often a bit fuzzy, as different
individuals’ interpretations of “today” may widely and wildly vary. Therefore, the exact starting point of the genre is still
debated; however, many art historians consider the late 1960s or early 1970s (the end of modern art, or modernism) to be
an adequate estimate.
