1. Why are the Himalayas important to us?


Ans: The Himalayas act as a wall along the northern boundary of India. They protect us
from the cold winds coming from the north. The rivers that originate in the Himalayas
provide water for irrigation and other uses. These rivers bring down silt and make the
Northern Plains fertile.

2. Why are the Northern Plains so fertile?


Ans: The Northern Plains is extremely fertile owing to the heavy silt deposits left by rivers
that flow through this region.

3. Which is the most densely populated region in India?


Ans: Northern Plains is the most densely populated region in India.

4. How is the Western Coastal Plains divided?


Ans: The western coastal plains are divided into two main parts: northern part is called the
Konkan Coast and the southern part is called the Malabar Coast.

5. Name the two island groups of India.


Ans: Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep Islands are two island groups of
India.
