General Information

About the BACpac Portal The Simplex Model 4190-9008 BACpac Portal is a microprocessor-based
communication device that provides seamless, one-way communications
between a 4020/4100/4120 Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) and the industry-
standard Building Automation and Control Network (BACnet). The portal acts
as a protocol translator between the Simplex 4100 Computer Port Protocol and
the industry-standard BACnet Protocol. When the BACpac Portal receives
system status messages from the FACP, it translates the messages into BACnet
Protocol and communicates the information to other BACnet devices.
The BACpac Portal can be used with either a stand-alone FACP or a 4120
Network of up to 600 points. (See Figure 1.)

LED Power-Up Sequence During power-up, the module goes through an initialization and self-test
sequence. Proper module power-up can be verified by observing the LEDs as
follows:

1. The Run and Error LEDs turn on and begin blinking.

2. The Error LED will then turn off.
3. The Run LED will continue blinking.
Note: The Error LED flashes three times in sync with the Run LED when the
module is formatted. The Run LED should never stop flashing. If the
Run LED stops flashing for 1.5 seconds, the watchdog timer will reset
the module.

Address DIP Switch Default The Address DIP switch (see Figure 8 for location) is configured using eight
Settings individual sliding DIP switches that are located on the module. The default
settings are shown in Figure 7. The value of each switch is indicated on the
module to the left of the individual switch. Switch 1 controls the transmission
Baud Rate and is set to the 9600 bps position (or OFF). Switches 2 through 8
are used for addressing. The module’s address is indicated by taking the sum of
the switch values set in the ON position. As shown in Figure 7, Switch 7 is in
the ON position. Therefore, the module’s address is two.

Figure 7. BACpac Portal Addressing DIP Switch Default Settings

Address Procedure
Use the following procedure to set the BACpac Portal address.
1. Turn the BACpac Portal power switch to the OFF position.
2. Set the BACpac Portal’s CMnet Baud Rate to 9600 baud using Switch
1 of the 8-position DIP switch as shown in Figure 7.
3. Use DIP Switches 2 through 8 to set the BACpac Portal’s address.

Wiring the 4190-9008 BACpac Referring to the 841-731 Field Wiring Diagram and Figure 7, wire the 4190-
Portal 9008 BACpac Portal in accordance with the following procedure.
1. Turn the BACpac Portal power switch OFF to prevent the module from
being powered up until proper voltage is verified.
2. Route the 120 VAC wiring to Terminal Block TB-3. (See Figure 10.)
Note: AC Wiring must be kept in the top-half of the enclosure. All
power-limited wiring (RS-232 on TB1 and TB2) must be kept in
the bottom half of the enclosure with a physical separation from
the non-power limited AC wiring.

3. Verify that 24 VAC is present across AC Secondary Fuses F1 and F2.

4. Turn the BACpac power switch ON.
5. Verify that the ‘Run” LED on the BACpac Portal is ON and blinking. If
this does not occur, turn the power switch OFF and check for wiring errors.

Programming the BACpac The Simplex Technical Representative (TR) is not required to program the
BACpac Portal in the field. The TR simply reprograms the 4020/4100/4120 via
Custom Control. The Portal has been preprogrammed with 4020/4100/4120
digital pseudo points already linked to BACnet objects. If the TR wants to send
a point out to the BACnet world, all he or she must do is tell a pseudo point to
turn on; the BACpac Portal sends out a related BACnet object.

Example:
If the customer wishes to add a point that is sent to the BACnet world, the first
available 4020/4100/4120 digital pseudo point that is linked to a BACnet object
is P513. The TR must write an SMPL equation similar to the following one:

In:
M1-1 ALM ; Alarm Status of Simplex Point
Out:
TRACK P513 on ; SIMPLEX 130-1-0 TO BACNET OBJECT 1
End:
;
In:
M1-1 TBL ; Trouble Status of Simplex Point
Out:
Track P514 on ; SIMPLEX 130-2-0 TO BACNET OBJECT 2
End:

When Pseudo Point P513 turns on, the BACpac Portal will send out the related
BACnet object. (See Default Configuration Worksheets.)
