Health-Related Laws
1. Consumer Act of the Philippines (RA 7394) It is a national policy which aims to protect the interest of the
consumers and buyers of products and services, promote consumers’ general welfare, and to set and
maintain standards of conduct for both the business and industrial sectors.
2. Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act of 1997 (RA 8423) It is an act creating the Philippine Institute of
Traditional and Alternative Health Care (PITAHC) to accelerate the development of traditional and
alternative health care in the Philippines, providing for a traditional and alternative health care development
fund and for other purposes.
3. Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012 (RA 10354) The Responsible Parenthood and
Reproductive Health Act of 2012, also known as the Reproductive Health Law or RH Law, is a law in the
Philippines that guarantees universal access to methods such as contraception, fertility control, sexual
education, and maternal care.
What is Reproductive Health (RH)? It refers to the state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being
and not merely the absence of disease relating to the reproductive system and to its functions and
processes.
Pillars of Reproductive Health
Pillar 1: INFORMED CHOICE To ensure the health of the mother and the child, an effective and quality
reproductive healthcare services, which are ethically and medically safe, legal, accessible, and affordable,
shall be given primacy to them.
Pillar 2: RESPECT FOR LIFE The Act recognizes that abortion is illegal and punishable by law. However,
mothers who will be identified to have aborted an unborn child will be served with post-abortive treatment
and counseling in a humane, nonjudgmental, and compassionate manner.
Pillar 3: BIRTH CONTROL Reproductive healthcare, information, and supplies shall be made available most
especially to poor beneficiaries. However, the Act also provides that the government must respect the
citizen’s individual preferences and choices of family planning method.
Pillar 4: RESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD Couples determine their ideal family size. In addition, the government
shall equip each parent with needed information in all aspects of family life, reproductive health, and this
pillar.
What is Family Planning? Family planning is a means to improve the quality of life of every Filipino. It is a
program which enables couples and individuals to decide freely and responsibly the number and spacing of
their children.
What is Responsible Parenthood? Parenthood is about raising children and supporting their needs
financially, morally, teaching them good values, and giving them love and care. It is one of the most
important duties in our society.

competence ❖ Encourage learning ❖ Give opportunities for education and self-development ❖ Inculcate

4. Philippine AIDS Prevention and Control Act of 1998 (RA 8504) RA 8504 is an act promulgating policies and
prescribing measures for the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS in the Philippines, instituting a nationwide
HIV/AIDS Information and Education Program, establishing a comprehensive HIV/AIDS monitoring system,
strengthening the Philippine National Aids Council, and for other purposes.
What is Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)? It is a viral infection that attacks and slowly destroys the
immune system of the infected person that leads to “immune deficiency”. It is progressive and can lead to
lack of body defense to all kinds of infection including those that do not normally infect man and can also
lead to cancer susceptibility.
What is Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)? It is a condition characterized by a combination of
signs and symptoms, caused by HIV contracted from another person. AIDS attacks and weakens the body’s
immune system, making the person who contracted the disease susceptible to other life-threatening
infections.
How do you get or transmit HIV? You can only get HIV by coming into direct contact with certain body fluids
from a person with HIV.
These fluids are: Blood, Semen, Rectal fluids, Vaginal fluids, Breastmilk
HIV is transmitted by: • Unprotected sex • Passing from infected mother to baby • Sharing contaminated
injecting equipment • Contaminated blood transfusion
HIV is NOT acquired or transmitted by: Insect bites, Toilet seats, Kissing, Sharing eating utensils, Touching
The first HIV case in the Philippines was reported in 1984. Ma. Dolzura Cortez (died1992) was the first
Filipino AIDS victim who came out in the open to tell about her life and how she acquired the AIDS virus.
5. National Blood Services Act of 1994 (RA 7719) Republic Act No. 7719 promotes voluntary blood donation to
provide sufficient supply of safe blood and to regulate blood banks. This act aims to inculcate public
awareness that blood donation is a humanitarian act.
6. Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (RA 10175) The act aims to address legal issues concerning online
interactions. With the advancement of technology, there are various platforms where you may express
yourself. This may do both good and harm to you.

7. National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008 (RA No. 9512) This act provides for the
promotion of environmental awareness through environmental education which shall encompass
environmental concepts and principles, environmental laws, the state of international and local
environment, local environmental best practices, the threats of environmental degradation and its impact on
human well-being, the responsibility of the citizenry to the environment and the value of conservation,
protection and rehabilitation of natural resources and the environment.
8. Seat Belts Use Act of 1999 (RA No. 8750) This act aims to secure and safeguard its citizenry, particularly the
passengers and drivers of private and public motor vehicles, from the ruinous and extremely injurious effects
of vehicular accidents. The policy includes the mandatory wearing of seat belt devices by the drivers and
front seat passengers of private and public motor vehicles.
9. Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 (RA No. 9165) The Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of
2002 (RA No. 9165) safeguards the well-being of its citizenry, particularly the youth, from the harmful effects
of dangerous drugs on their physical and mental well-being, and to defend the same against acts or
omissions detrimental to their development and preservation.

 The characteristics and functions of mobile devices are to make a phone calls, text messages, provide
direction, capture/edit/modify images, play music, allow us to read and edit documents through the
downloading application.

1 .Instagram-is a free online photo sharing application and social 3 network that was acquired by Facebook
in 2012. It allows users to edit and upload photos and videos through mobile application. It is interactive and
easily comment on pictures and allowing users to photograph memories, places and objects they admire
with effects.
2.Snapchat-it is an application where you can share photos, videos and messages with other people. The
essential function is to take picture or video,add filters,lenses or other effects and share them with friends

• Mobile phone art is the use of mobile devices to produce an image with creative effects and filters
• The other major function of mobile phone is for communication purposes where you can text messages, call, and
chat with other people.
• Mobile devices can capture, edit photos and videos, create, manipulate, and share works of art.
• Mobile Applications are Instagram and Snapchat.
Instagram is a free online photo sharing application and allows users to edit and upload photos and videos through
mobile application. While Snapchat is where can only share photos, videos and messages with other people and
online platform application.

Walking and Running Program

Walking as an Exercise
Walking exercises have a lot of benefits to each individual. A study in 2014 found that people who are suffering from
chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer, and the like were “half as likely to die during a one-
year period” when they often engage in walking compared to those who rarely hit the streets. Another study on
more than 50,000 adults who walked regularly at a quick paced were about 20 percent less likely to die, 24 percent
of which were less likely to die from heart disease. Walking is generally considered as a moderate physical activity
but it is effective in promoting metabolic fitness and overall health. You can burn 100 calories per mile. It varies
depending on the individual, speed, terrain, etc.
Yoga exercises on the other hand, increase respiratory efficiency and improve posture and balance.
In choosing shoes during walking exercise, you should consider the following:
✓ low heels
✓ flexible sole
✓ lightweight and breathable fabric
✓ great fit

Brisk walking is defined as walking continuously at a fast speed. It is one of the easiest and most effective cardio
workouts. You do it indoors or outdoors without any special equipment. Some well-researched benefits of brisk
walking include: weight loss, improved cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure and blood sugar, and improved
mental health.
Shin pains are very common for new walkers. It can also be a problem when increasing speed or distance. To avoid
aching shin, increase speed and distance gradually; wear good, flexible, walking shoes with low heels; perform ankle
circles; and toe points before and after your walk.

To have a successful walking exercise, you should eat something high in carbohydrates, whole grain cereal, whole
wheat bread, and banana. Avoid fatty and heavy meal that might upset you stomach. You should also bring water to
drink during and after the walk.

Walking at least 5 kilometers an hour counts as moderate exercise while 8 kilometers is considered as vigorous
exercise. Healthy people should try 10,000 steps per day to improve their health.

A. Running as an Exercise
Running are cardio exercises that are very simple to do. This activity can help burn calories and can build
strength, among other things. Researchers have found that people who run at least 40 miles per week have
healthier hearts than those who run 13 miles a week. Running also improves working memory and focus.

What do you usually do everyday? Do you attend fun run or run for a cause? Do you accomplish household
chores? During your free time, do you go outside and play badminton or any sports activity? Do you like to walk,
jog and run rather than riding a motorcycle when going somewhere near? Do you love to dance or have a yoga
exercise? If yes, then you are really physically fit and far from any health risks. Physical fitness is being active. It
can be as simple as choosing to go up and down through a lift or just walking your way through.

Running is a great way to get fit and feel better. After you started your walking program, you can start now

B. Types of Runs

1. Recovery Run - A slow run that helps you recover from a fast pace run. A longer run that is done to build
muscle. When you do the recovery run you should be able to have a comfortable conversation
2. Base Run - Short run at a normal pace not too long or too short.
3. Long Run - Long slow run that’s anything from 1 – 2 hours. You should feel tired after the run.
4. Progression run - Start slow then go to your race pace and then end slow again.
5. Fartlek - It could be a mix of jogging and sprinting, but for beginners, it could be walking with jogging.
6. Hill Repeats - Repeat short segments of hard uphill running. Increases your aerobic power.
7. Tempo Run - Easy start and then time trial lactate threshold, then a cool down.
8. Sprints - To run shorter distances at a faster than normal pace with multiple repeats during the workout.
9. Interval - A mixture of low-moderate and high-intensity run.

Lifestyle and Risk Factors

Lifestyle is the way which an individual lives. It includes the typical patterns of the individual’s usual activities at
home, school, work or community. It also covers the big details of his life like principles, priorities, financial
management, even the smallest details of his habits like eating, sleeping, doing exercise, or anything related to his
individual role.

Risk factors are variables in one’s lifestyle that may lead to certain ailments. Examples of these are genetics of
heredity, age and physical composition which likely affect your lifestyle. Human activities and motion can also
become risk factors such as sedentary lifestyle which causes obesity; smoking which causes lung malfunctions;
alcohol intake which causes abnormal functioning of the nervous system; and imbalance diet which makes one more
prone to underlying diseases and health risks.
MUSIC
Afro-Latin American and Popular Music

You might know the continent of Africa as a place with jungles, deserts, wild animals, and is blazingly hot but this
area of the planet is one of the oldest in history. The first known species of man was excavated from this region. Its
music is also one of the earliest in time. Music has been a vital part of the lives of Africans. It was primarily
performed during rituals in the monumental parts of their lives like birth, marriage, death, and war. Music was
usually performed with dancing as a part of gatherings whether it is social or political.

African music is one of the most influential styles of music in the world. It has greatly influenced the music of
Contemporary America, Latin America and European music. Its highly energetic and rhythmically challenging beats
are quite universal. Jazz, Gospel and Spiritual, and Rhythm and Blues (RnB) are genres of music that have deep roots
to African music.

The music of Africa is the product of the diverse history, topography, and unique musical heritage of more than 50
countries. It is the result of the fusion of traditional and European influences which was a result of the colonization
of Europe to most of the continent until the 19th Century.

TRADITIONAL MUSIC OF AFRICA


African traditional music is mainly functional in nature which is used primarily in ceremonial rites, such as birth,
death, marriage, succession, worship, and spirit invocations. Others are work related or social in nature, while many
traditional societies view their music as a form of entertainment.

Some Types of African Music


1. Afrobeat – It is a term used to describe the fusion of West African with Black American music.
2. Apala (Akpala) - It is a musical genre from Nigeria in the Yoruba tribal style to wake up the worshippers after
fasting during the Muslim holy feast of Ramadan.
3. Axe - It is a popular musical genre from Salvador, Bahia, and Brazil. It fuses the Afro-Caribbean styles of marcha,
reggae, and calypso.
4. Jit - It is a hard and fast percussive Zimbabwean dance music played on drums with guitar accompaniment
influenced by mbira-based guitar styles.
5. Jive - It is a popular form of South African music featuring a lively and uninhibited variation of the jitterbug, a form
of swing dance.
6. Juju - It is a popular music style from Nigeria that relies on the traditional Yoruba rhythms. A drum kit, keyboard,
pedal steel guitar, and accordion are used along with the traditional dun-dun (talking drum or squeeze drum).
7. Kwassa Kwassa – It is a music style that begun in Zaire in the late 1980s popularized by Kanda Bongo Man. In this
dance style, the hips move back and forth while the arms move following the hips.
8. Marabi – It is a South African three-chord township music of the 1930s-1960s which evolved into African Jazz. It is
characterized by simple chords in varying vamping patterns and repetitive harmony over an extended period.

VOCAL FORMS OF AFRICAN MUSIC


1. Maracatu – It is the combination of strong rhythms of African percussion instruments and Portuguese melodies.
This form of music is being paraded along the streets by up to 100 participants.
2. Blues – It is one of the most widely performed musical forms of the late 19th century. The melodies of blues are
expressive and soulful. The slaves and their descendants used to sing these as they work in the fields.
3. Soul – It is a popular music genre of the 1950s and 1960s which originated in the African-American community
throughout the United States. It combines elements of African-American gospel music, rhythm and blues, and often
jazz.
4. Spiritual – It originated in the Unites States and created by African-American slaves. It is also known as “Negro
Spiritual”. It became a means of imparting Christian values and a way of venting their hardships as slaves.
5. Call and Response – It is likened to a question and answer sequence in human communication. The slaves used to
sing these songs while simultaneously doing all their tasks in a day.
