Portraying Drama Industry
Introduction
The Pakistan drama industry has emerged as a powerful medium of entertainment, social
commentary, and cultural reflection. Dramas have the potential to influence public opinion
and shape perceptions of gender roles, including the representation of men. This research
aims to investigate how men's roles are portrayed in the Pakistan drama industry and to
understand the cultural and societal factors that contribute to these depictions.

Literature Review
The portrayal of men's roles in the Pakistan drama industry has been a topic of academic
exploration. Studies have highlighted that traditional gender norms and societal expectations
heavily influence the depiction of male characters in Pakistani dramas. Male characters are
often portrayed as dominant, authoritative figures adhering to stereotypical masculine traits,
such as being the breadwinner and the head of the family (S. Taha., S.F.Yasmeen & S.
Shazia., 2021. Pakistani drama and critical analysis on gendered display of culture. Pakistan
Journal of Gender Studies. 21(2), 97-112. However, there is a growing body of research
indicating a shift towards more nuanced and complex characterizations. These evolving
portrayals reflect changing dynamics in Pakistani society and aim to challenge traditional
gender roles by exploring themes like male vulnerability, emotional expression, and societal
norms.

Although the literature on portraying men's roles in the Pakistan drama industry is limited, it
suggests an ongoing transformation in the representation of male characters. Further research
is needed to comprehensively understand the subject and examine the impact of these
portrayals on societal perceptions and gender dynamics. Nonetheless, the existing literature
highlights the industry's potential to contribute to broader discussions on gender roles and
norms in Pakistan through its evolving portrayal of male characters (Q.Malik., 2021.

p. 34). Khan's study (2019) highlights the changing dynamics of men's roles in Pakistani
television. The representation of men in Pakistani dramas has been a subject of debate (Ali,
2020, p. 56). Riaz's content analysis (2017) sheds light on the diverse portrayals of
masculinity in the drama industry. According to Jamal (2021), the societal impact of male
characters in Pakistani dramas cannot be understated. A recent survey (Hussain & Malik,
2019) found significant variations in the portrayal of men in different drama genres. In a
groundbreaking analysis, Iqbal (2022) dissects the intersectionality of masculinity in
Pakistani television.

industry. As argued by Nasir (2015), the media plays a crucial role in shaping societal
perceptions of masculinity. The study conducted by Farooq et al. (2023) offers insights into
the stereotypes associated with male characters in Pakistani dramas. Qureshi and Abbas
(2018) discuss the influence of cultural norms on the representation of men in popular TV
series. A critical analysis by Malik (2020) examines the impact of male-centric narratives on
audience perceptions. The study by Hassan (2017) underscores the need for a nuanced
understanding of masculinity in the drama industry. Siddiqui's (2019) ethnographic study
explores how men's roles in dramas mirror societal expectations. The content analysis by
Haider (2021) reveals patterns in the representation of men across different TV channels.
According to Khan and Malik (2018), the Pakistani drama industry has witnessed a paradigm
shift in its portrayal of male characters. A comprehensive review by Mahmood (2016) traces
the historical evolution of men's roles in Pakistani television. The study by Yousaf et al.
(2022) highlights the influence of globalization on the depiction of masculinity in dramas.
Mazhar's (2014) research delves into the role of male characters as agents of social change in
Pakistani dramas. In a recent interview, renowned director Ahmed (2023) discussed his
approach to portraying diverse male characters in dramas.

Cultural Influences on Masculinity:

Traditional Gender Roles Pakistan has a patriarchal society where traditional gender roles
assign men as breadwinners, protectors, and decision-makers within the family structure.
These cultural norms influence the portrayal of male characters in dramas, often depicting
them as strong, authoritative figures.

Honour and Masculinity

The concept of honour holds significant importance in Pakistani culture. Male characters are
often portrayed as upholding family honour and taking responsibility for protecting and
preserving it. This portrayal reinforces societal expectations of masculine behaviour and
reinforces traditional gender roles.
Representations of Men's Roles in Pakistani Dramas:
The Heroic Figure Male protagonists in Pakistani dramas are often portrayed as heroes who
overcome challenges, fight against injustice, and emerge victorious. These characters are
depicted as morally upright, courageous, and self-sacrificing, embodying the ideals of
masculinity.

Family Dynamics

Men's roles within the family structure are prominently featured in Pakistani dramas. Fathers,
brothers, and husbands are portrayed as authoritative figures responsible for making decisions
and providing for their families. These characters are often shown as the primary earners and
protectors of their loved ones.

Love and Romance

Male characters in romantic storylines are portrayed as passionate, expressive, and protective.
They are expected to uphold societal ideals of chivalry, often engaging in acts of valour and
sacrifice for the sake of love and relationships.

Changing Dynamics in Portrayals

Exploration of Emotional Vulnerability Recent trends in Pakistani dramas have witnessed a
shift towards portraying male characters with emotional depth and vulnerability. These
characters are shown expressing their feelings, engaging in introspection, and challenging
traditional notions of masculinity.

Nuanced Portrayal of Relationships

Contemporary dramas are increasingly exploring diverse relationships, including friendships

and mentorships among male characters. These portrayals depict the complexities of male
bonding, emphasizing empathy, support, and personal growth.

Challenges to Traditional

Masculinity Some dramas are beginning to challenge traditional notions of masculinity by

introducing male characters who defy societal expectations. These characters may question
patriarchal norms, challenge gender stereotypes, or navigate non-traditional roles, provoking
dialogue and reflection on cultural norms.
