El artículo en inglés

Cuando hablamos del artículo en inglés, debemos saber que tenemos determinado e
indeterminado. Hoy vamos a ver el determinado the (el, la, los, las) y en concreto lo que
se conoce en inglés por el nombre de ‘zero article’, que quiere decir cuándo no se pone
el artículo the en inglés.

The zero article

the is used when we mean school, hospital, university, prison as specific

buildings. the is not used when we mean these places as a general meaning.
Con “general meaning” queremos decir, cuando se utilizan estos edificios para lo que
se han construido. Por ejemplo, el colegio es para estudiar, al igual que la
universidad, el hospital para gente que está enferma, etc.

Sam’s a student and at school now (a general idea)

Sam’s mother is at the school to talk to the teacher ( a specific building, place)

He was sent to prison for six months (a general idea)

We went to the prison to visit my friend ( a specific building, place)
Ted stayed at hospital for three weeks (a general idea)
He works at the hospital ( a specific building, place)

He was taken to the prison ( a specific building, place)

She was collected from the hospital ( a specific building, place)

She doesn’t have to go to university (a general idea)

Where is the university? ( a specific building, place)
What time do you go to bed? (a general idea)
She sat on the bed for a while ( a specific bed as an object)

We were jumping on the bed ( a specific bed as an object)

With school, university, prison, hospital, church, bed, work and home we use the when we are talking about a
particular one, and zero article when we are talking about the idea of school, university… Con “the idea of”
queremos decir cuando se utilizan estos edificios para lo que están construidos. Es decir, el colegio es para
estudiar, si voy allí a eso, a estudiar, no pondría artículo the (I go to school every day t 9). Si por el contrario voy
para otro propósito, por ejemplo, un padre para hablar con un profesor de su hijo, está yendo al colegio no para
estudiar, en este caso sí pondría el rticulo the: John’s father went to the school to talk to his teacher.

The church on our street was built in the 17th Century. (a particular church)
I go to church every Sunday (the idea of church, not a particular building)
My friend works at the prison outside the city centre.
My husband is in prison.

I was feeling sick yesterday so I didn’t go to work.
The new bed is bigger than the old one.
I put my children to bed a 8pm.
