SUBCUTANEOUS INJECTION

Draws up drug to be injected from AMPOULE/ VIAL into syringe: Same as
Intramuscular injection.
6. Identification of area for needle insertion
Select area based on patient preference/ drug characteristics: Upper arm,
anterolateral thigh, anterior abdomen, upper back (scapular region), dorsogluteal
region. Site should be free of any rashes, lesions, moles, hardened or swollen area.
7. Preparation of site of the injection
Perform hand hygiene and wear gloves
Clean the site using alcohol swab in firm circular motion
Allow the site to dry
8. Process of Subcutaneous injection
Pull the cap from the needle.
Using the non-dominant hand, pinch fold of skin (in thin patients) or pull
taut of skin of the site of injection
Using the dominant hand, hold the syringe between thumb and forefinger
with the bevel of the needle facing up
Insert needle in the base of the skin-fold at an angle of 45-90 degrees
Release skin (to avoid injecting the drug into the compressed tissue and
irritating the nerves)
Aspirate briefly. If blood appears, withdraw needle, replace it with a new
one, if possible, and start again at another site. Inject slowly (0.5-2
minutes). You should feel minimal resistance and a skin bleb must not
appear
Withdraw needle quickly
Do not recap the needle. Discard the syringe in dustbin for sharp waste
In case any blood oozes, pat with a dry sterile gauge piece
Communicate to the patient about completion of the procedure
Remove & discard the gloves
Perform hand hygiene
Evaluate the patient for any side-effects
