The second thing I want to do is thank everyone who is reading this for
being so patient while waiting for this book. The original release date was
October of 2022. It’s been over a year since my last publication, and this
was the longest hiatus I’ve taken from writing in over a decade. I only
planned on taking a break for two months, but time slipped away from me.
My real life became increasingly complicated, and I convinced myself I
was going to die when some serious health issues cropped up. It was a very
unpleasant downward spiral.
In hindsight, I think I was dealing with a pretty textbook case of clinical
depression brought on by the medication for one of those things I was sure
was gonna take me out. Getting out of bed felt too hard some days; any
minor inconvenience was enough to derail my emotions for days. I’m
typically a self-aware human, but I guess when you’re in the middle of
something like that, you can’t see yourself clearly, let alone the rest of the
world.
I didn’t die. I got puppies. And I started writing again when I was sure I
would never be able to create another book in my lifetime. I’m so happy to
be here and to share this book with you. And I’m eternally grateful to those
who waited, and for the fact my readers are unbelievably kind and
understanding.
Thankfully, I didn’t get a nasty gram or email demanding to know
where this book was. That would’ve been an added hurdle to what I was
already dealing with. I don’t know if I could’ve cleared it.
Now onto my notes about the actual book!
I had a lot of fun writing this one. I knew from the start I wanted to
write a Marked Men/Point crossover when I started working on the kids’
stories. And, as I mentioned at the beginning of this book, I specifically
introduced Campbell at the end of Respect to write him as a hero (anti-hero)
in the second-gen series. The more I got to know Daire in the Forever
Marked books, the more I knew she needed a special story. She’s such a
cool girl and such a force to be reckoned with; I knew I needed to take her
out of the comfort of Denver and put her to the test. I knew she needed
someone who would challenge her, and I wanted the kids from Denver to
have connections to others aside from the people they grew up with and had
known all their lives. It was interesting to me to see if Daire could survive a
guy like Campbell and fit into his world. And could he learn to love a girl
like her? Having them bounce back and forth between his world and hers
was such a great opportunity to meld my many worlds together; I couldn’t
pass it up.
Some readers may think I spent too much time on other characters and
in other locations, and that’s a valid critique. I’m aware I leaned more
heavily on character connections outside of the family units in this book.
However, that was the only way I stayed interested in telling this story, and
I wasn’t going to risk another writer’s block or creative crash to give certain
beloved characters more time on the page. For whatever reason, this was
the only book I could write. I hope the majority has as much fun with it as I
did.
Another thing I’m sure some will point out is the impossibility of all the
connections and impossibility of these people knowing or interacting with
one another. It is admittedly far-fetched.
When I write, be it a series or a standalone, I always see each book by
how it connects to the rest of the overall world I’ve written. Think of the
MCU, only it’s the JCU! Each individual piece is part of a larger puzzle in
my mind; there are only a couple of degrees of separation between the sets
of characters. I also set all my books in places I’ve been or base the places
on real locations I’m familiar with, so that narrows down the world even
more. The likelihood of all these interaction points is much more probable
when you see things from my perspective. As I said, I hope most folks have
fun connecting the dots and running into all the familiar faces every few
chapters.
And big shout out to everyone who wants to punch Race in the face by
the end of the book! He’s still one of the best villains in Romancelandia and
never gets enough credit for being truly diabolical and awful. He’s an
underrated bad guy, and I hope Campbell teaches him a lesson!
Now that Daire’s book is done, I plan to jump into Zowen’s book
quickly.
The question will follow: how many more books will there be in this
series?
The truth is, I don’t have solid plans past Zowen’s book. There has been
less interest in the second-gen than I hoped. For business and personal
reasons, I only invest money in books that are profitable. I never say never
on any idea, but after Wayward Son, I will definitely move on to something
else.
And now, for the news that probably should’ve been my opener. If
you’re a long-time reader, you more than likely found me through Rule. If
so, I’m excited to announce that my most beloved book, Rule, is being
adapted into a movie by Voltage Pictures! It’s so exciting.
I can’t believe that Rule and Shaw are coming to the big screen ten
years after release, sometime in 2024.
Rule will be played by Chase Stokes and Sydney Taylor will play Shaw.
And my favorite part is that the film was directed by romance movie legend
Nick Cassavetes. He was the man behind The Notebook.
If the movie does well, they plan to adapt the rest of the Marked Men
series as a connected universe, just like the books. Again, THE JCU! I
might have my own cinematic romance universe. It’s special.

I hope you know how much this author appreciates you. For waiting.
For reading. For reviewing. For your time. For interacting. For your
encouragement and support. After ten years, I still feel incredibly lucky and
grateful every day when I realize reading and writing romance is my actual
job. Teenage me, who lost her mind over her first Sandra Brown book and
begged her mom to buy her Nora Roberts novels, would be astonished that
she made it this far and remains able to support herself by writing books in
her favorite genre.
AS I MENTIONED, I want to thank all the readers who have been waiting
on this book. I know it took a lot longer than it should’ve. I appreciate your
patience.
This time around a huge chunk of my gratitude goes to my technical
team. I mean, I’m always super thankful to have them working on my
books, but with this book I leaned on them all much more heavily than in
the past. Writing a book is not like riding a bike. If you take time away from
it, and the whole market has changed in the process, jumping back in is
daunting. There is also the added head-fuckery and crippling self-doubt that
comes with wondering if your readers are still going to be there after such a
long break. It’s rough. But all the folks behind the scenes made sure this
book could hold its own and that it would shine for those who did wait for
it.
Shoutout to my beta team: Pam, Sarah, Teri, Kelly, Alexandra, Cheron,
and my assistant Melissa. They made sure this book came together
seamlessly, which was no easy task since it combined two BIG series with
many characters and settings. They also had to deal with missing
paragraphs and chopped up sentences because I was writing while trying to
wrangle two new puppies. My rough drafts are always ugly, but this one
was a monster. (Kind of on brand for Campbell and Daire, tbh.) I’m so
grateful they offer their time and talent to help me get the best book out to
my readers as possible. If you think they’re always kind and sweet when
they edit my hot messes, you’re wrong. These ladies spare no feelings and
pull no punches when something isn’t working. Of course, they are my
biggest cheerleaders when I get something exceptionally right as well.
And Mel gets even more thanks for riding the waves of feast or famine
with me. Whether it’s a huge dry spell or I have one-million tasks for her to
complete in a minuscule amount of time, she takes it all in stride and
matches my needs perfectly. We’re coming up on close to a decade of
friendship, and being co-workers, which I think is a testament to how
valuable she is in both my professional and personal life.
As for the rest of my technical team, I’m sure you’ve noticed I always
work with the same people on my self-published titles. That’s because they
always come through, and I believe they are worth every penny. They’ve
helped keep my books and brand professional and consistent for over
twenty-ish different titles. Hang comes through with perfect covers based of
my vague wants and needs. Elaine makes sure the story flows and gets my
underlying message across. She even reminds me that no one, even in
romancelandia, needs a six-thousand-word sex scene...lol. We might not
always see eye to eye on some of her changes, but my books have never
suffered for it. Beth is the BEST copy editor (editor, in general). I wish I
had her to fix up all my titles from the very start. She’s taught me so much
over the years. I know for a fact my technical skills now put my early
writing to shame. She also lets me drag her to see K-pop with me, so even if
I didn’t love working with her professionally, I would love her for her
friendship sacrifices. I don’t think I’ve ever officially thanked Wander and
Andrey for always being a breeze to work with when it comes to finding the
perfect guy to go on the cover of my books. Wander is so talented and such
a kind man. (His whole team is really great.) I know there are very few
spot-on cover models, but I feel Wander always gets it close enough. And if
you wonder if inflation has hit the hot boy market...woo-boy...lemme tell
you, buying a picture for your cover is the same as paying a mortgage, so
the image better be worth the investment, and Wander’s always are.
Just...thank you to everyone who helps me keep being able to do what I
do, even when it is really really fucking difficult. You’re the bees’ knees.
