EDWARD DE BONO IS REGARDED AS THE WORLD’S LEADING authority in the direct teaching of
thinking as a skill. His work is in use in thousands of schools around the world and mandatory on the
curriculum in some countries. His instruction in thinking has been sought by major corporations such as:
IBM, Microsoft, Shell, Prudential, GM, Ford and Citicorp. He is the originator of ‘lateral thinking’ which
for the first time in history puts creativity on a formal, usable basis. Based on an understanding of the
brain as a self organising mechanism, Edward de Bono designed specific thinking tools which are now
widely used. He has been called ‘the father of thinking about thinking’.
Edward de Bono defines lateral thinking as the method of "Exploring multiple possibilities and
approaches instead of pursuing a single approach." Edward de Bono has written extensively about the
process of lateral thinking -- the generation of novel solutions to problems. The point of lateral thinking
is that many problems require a different perspective to solve successfully.
