The Holy Quran was revealed to the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in 23 years,
from 610 AD to 632 AD, and the surahs are divided into Makki and
Madani Surahs. The Quran was compiled while it was being revealed,
and the scribes of the Prophet (PBUH) were responsible for the
compilation. The revelation of the Quran concluded with the last
revelation in 10 AH.
The First Revelation
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) received the first revelation on the 27th of
Ramadan in 610 AD in the cave of Hira, which was three miles away
from Makkah. When the Prophet (PBUH) was forty years old, he began
to like solitude due to the corruption in Makkah. Hence, he often went
for meditation in the cave of Hira.
On 27th Ramadan, while he was in the cave of Hira meditating, he
suddenly heard a voice. The voice belonged to Hazrat Jibreal (AS). He
said, ‘Read’ and hugged the Holy Prophet (PBUH). The Prophet (PBUH)
replied, ‘I cannot read.’ The same thing happened again, but when
Hazrat Jibreal (AS) asked to read the third time, the Prophet (PBUH)
asked, ‘What should I read?’.
Then, in answer, the following verses of Surah Al-Alaq were revealed:
‘Read, ˹O Prophet,˺ in the Name of your Lord Who created —
created humans from a clinging clot.
Recite, and your Lord is the Most Generous
Who taught by the pen
taught humanity what they knew not.’ [96:1–5]

How were the Revelations Received?
‘And it is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him except
by revelation or from behind a partition or that He sends a messenger to
reveal, by His permission, what He wills. Indeed, He is Most High and
Wise.’ [42:51]
In Surah Ash Surah, God revealed that revelations were received
through dreams, and they were also imprinted in the Holy Prophet’s
(PBUH) heart. Moreover, Hazrat Jirbeal (AS) sometimes visited the
Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) in his original form or an animal to deliver
the revelations. While receiving the revelations, the Holy Prophet
(PBUH) would hear the sound of bells, his weight would increase
significantly, or he would sweat a lot, even in cold weather.

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) went home unnerved, and his wife, Hazrat
Khadija (AS), took him to her cousin, Warqa bin Nawful, a Christian
scholar. He confirmed that the Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) had been
granted prophethood and helped calm the Holy Prophet (PBUH) after
the incident. After the first revelation, the revelation of the Quran
continued for 23 years.
