NFDN 2004 Assignment 1: Prenatal Teaching Plan

Value: This assignment is worth 20% of your final grade. It is composed of 2 parts.
Prenatal Educational Plan Assessment -5%
Scholarly Paper – 15 %
Purpose:
To provide the student with an opportunity to explore health concerns experienced by a maternal
client. The student will apply the nursing metaparadigm to assess a maternal client and fetus to
identify health priorities that require in-depth teaching.

You will be assessed on how you apply an understanding of the following general learning outcomes:
• Integrate the nursing metaparadigm, nursing theory, and related knowledge to maternity nursing.
• Apply principles of teaching and learning and health promotion to the maternity client and the
family.
• Relate cultural competency to maternity nursing.
• Incorporate research findings in evidence-informed practice in the delivery of maternity nursing
care
Please read through all the instructions before you begin.
• This assignment is to be completed individually.
• The information provided on the teaching care plan must be typewritten and well organized in
the appropriate sections.
• Include template as part of your paper.
• Part 1 and Part 2 must be submitted in a single word document. (no PDF’s, google docs or Mac
pages will be accepted)
• Please see your instructor for guidance or clarification as you work through part 1.

Instructions:
Part 1 – Prenatal Educational Plan Assessment (5%)
• Read through all four case studies provided in this assignment. They are located on the
last page of this document.
Choose one of the following case studies:
• Courtney
• Oksana
• Ekemma
• Stephanie
• Use the information from your chosen case study and complete the Prenatal Teaching
Plan. A Prenatal Teaching Plan chart has been provided on Moodle. Please use as part of
your assignment package.
• Identify the following areas:

• Stage of growth and development of the pregnant person based on a developmental
theory (Erickson or Piaget-PSYC 1060)
• Apply the assessment data/information from the case study to the components of the
nursing metaparadigm on the template.
• If there are gaps in the scenario information for the nursing metaparadigm, it is an
expectation that you identify what further information as a nursing you would need to
assess to fill in the gaps in the metaparadigm. What further information does the nurse
need to know?
This can be used to help you identify the educational needs of the client.

• Identify 3 health learning needs based on the scenario and assessment data. •
Supporting literature required for each education needed
• From these identify one as being the priority.
• Write one outcome for the priority health learning need identified. The outcome should
follow the SMART criteria. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely) What
would you like to accomplish?

Part 2 – Writing a Scholarly Paper (15%)

1. Take your #1 priority health learning need from section D on the Prenatal Teaching Plan chart
(part 1) and write a scholarly paper.
2. Literature support required throughout the paper.
3. The paper should outline each of the following focused areas.
a. Introduction- indicate what your paper is about
b. A brief comprehensive description of the priority health concern
c. Educational content for the priority health concern. Consider the
following areas:
i. Effects the health concern will have on the pregnant person
ii. Effects the health concern will have on the fetus/newborn
iii. Effects the health concern could have in the postpartum period.
d. Conclusion summarizing what your paper is about 4. Your scholarly paper
must include the following criteria:
a. Should be between 3.5 and 4.5 pages in length (no more and no less), plus the title
page and reference page
b. Introduction
c. Body of paper includes the:
i. description of the concern
ii. effects the health concern has on the pregnant person
iii. effects on the fetus/newborn
iv. potential postpartum concerns that need to be considered
d. Conclusion

e. Outside sources and references to support your ideas (this literature support is included
throughout the paper)
f. APA formatting (7th ed.)

• All parts of this assignment must be typewritten, well-organized and utilize proper writing
conventions (see rubric).
• Submit document to the Assignment 1 drop box in Moodle.
• Use the following file submissions in the Moodle drop box:

Assessment:
You will be assessed using the assignment rubric created as part of this assignment package. The rubric
is located as a PDF file in the assignment drop box. Feedback about your assignment will be provided in
Moodle gradebook.

Case Studies

1. Case Study: Courtney


Courtney is 34 years old and has come alone to the clinic for her prenatal check-up. She is 26 weeks
pregnant, and is a gravida 3, para 0 (2 spontaneous abortions). Courtney is wearing heavy makeup
and has dark circles under her eyes, she informs the nurse that she has left her abusive spouse and
is staying at a Women’s Shelter. The nurse notes that Courtney does not make eye contact and has
lost weight since her last check-up. During the assessment, the nurse notices finger marks on her
right arm and bruises on her abdomen. Courtney is crying and expresses concern about the health
of her baby and wants to hear the heartbeat.

2. Case Study: Oksana


Oksana is 39 years old, and 24 weeks pregnant. Oksana has recently immigrated to Canada with her
spouse from Ukraine. She has been married for two years and this is her first pregnancy. Her spouse
accompanies her to all her prenatal visits, is very excited about the pregnancy. Today she has come to
her prenatal appointment with complaints of a headache and puffiness in her hands. She states that
she is worried that stress in her job will have a negative effect on the baby. Her job requires that she
travels a lot and eat out with clients. During the assessment, the nurse notes the following:
blood pressure142/90, pulse 80, respiration 16, urine protein +1.

3. Case Study: Ekemma


Ekemma is 26 years old and is proud of her Indigenous background. Ekemma is married and her
spouse works long hours driving a tow truck. Ekemma is often on her own for many hours at a time.
32 weeks pregnant and recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes that has been diet controlled so
far. At her regularly scheduled prenatal appointment, the nurse notices her blood glucose diary is

missing several entries and that over the past weekend her blood glucose readings were between 15-
19 mmol/L. Ekemma is missing her extended family who live in British Columbia.

4. Case Study: Stephanie


Stephanie is 16 years old, single and in high school. She lives with her mother, father, and two
older siblings (one sister, one brother). She is on the Honour Roll and is active in extra-curricular
school activities. Stephanie is currently 11 weeks pregnant and is attending her first prenatal visit
with her mom. Stephanie does not respond to questions regarding drugs and tobacco however,
she admits to drinking a little on weekends with friends prior to finding out she was pregnant.
She informs the nurse that she wants to keep the baby. Her mother has raised the topic of
breastfeeding. Stephanie appears disgusted at the thought of breastfeeding.
