Our membership for 2008–2009 has remained strong and we are pleased that, despite the downturn in the economy,
our industry partners remain committed to the education of their employees. At Convocation on November 20, 2008,
we celebrated the achievements of 5 GIE graduates, 76 CIP graduates, and 22 FCIP graduates and, in total, 335 people
enjoyed the Convocation event held once again at the Palomino Room at the Roundup Centre. It began with Graduate
photos of which every graduate got to take theirs home that same day. It then merged into the Industry Trade Show &
Graduate Reception followed by the delicious meal and the graduate certificate presentations and award presentations.
We also had a very special and extremely prestigious National Award presented by Peter Hohman to Louise Bevan-
Stewart of Wawanesa (and IISA Past President) for long-term dedication and commitment in sharing and promoting the
Insurance Institute’s vision of continual educational and professional development. In addition, the IISA Council and
staff are very proud and offer our congratulations to Louis Bevan-Stewart as she was nominated and elected to be the
Regional Vice Chair for the Western Provinces.
Wanting to stay actively in touch with our members, we were pleased to have released 3 successful newsletters in the
last 12 months offering better content, format and an overall more professional appearance. As our Academic and
Professional Divisions will report, 2008–2009 has been a very successful year in terms of seminars topics and
attendance, our exposure in career fairs and ambassadorship, our social event with Natalie McMaster and the CPO, CIP
courses being offered, and our Convocation ceremonies.
Our Board has always been focused on the educational needs of our members and being able to exceed our member’s
expectations of customer service. I believe we accomplished this. When our customers needed us, we were there, and
they truly felt that as an Institute, we had given them that special personal interaction that we are all seeking in the
business world. I would like to personally thank the IISA Board for their continued dedication and service to the Institute
and to our industry. Clyde Nobbee, Louise Bevan Stewart, Henry Miller, Lynne Fawcett, Kevin Calbeck, Trevor Grieve,
Vitaly Matyushin, Suzanne Thurlow, Becky Wagner, Jim Fischer, Norma Nielson, Christopher Trollope, Dominic Rozario,
and Punam Makwana gave of their valuable time to serve on our Board or as an advisor and my thanks go out to each
one of them.
The dedicated efforts of IISA staff members Caroline Logan, Paula Alvarez and Lorraine Storm are indescribable and the
number of times when they have put the needs of IISA, its members, and volunteers ahead of their own are immense. It
is they who hold everything together and functioning. We extend our most sincere thanks to each of you as well as to
the staff at the IIC for their ongoing support and efforts in promoting our vision of being the premiere educational body
within the insurance industry. I would also like to thank all of our industry partners for supporting the IISA and allowing
their employees to take the time to attend our seminars, classes, proctor the exams, and volunteer to be on the Council.
It has been an honour and a pleasure to serve as President for the last 2 1/2 years. I would like to extend my
congratulations to Clyde Nobbee as he steps in to fill the role of President. To those leaving Council this year, I’d like to
thank you for your efforts and hope to keep in touch through our future social and academic events. To the remaining
Council Members as well as new members, I look forward to working with you in the coming year as I move in to the
role of Past President.
Respectfully submitted,

Web Based Courses
We are absolutely thrilled to report that IISA ran its first WebClass during the Winter 09 semester - C13-Insurance
Against Liability with Barb Exton. There were 16 students – interestingly almost all of whom were from Calgary. The
format received good reviews from the students and for Spring 09 we are offering C16-The Business of Insurance with
George Cooper as well as C120-Underwriting Essentials with Leah Strader-Goled. We will continue our attempts at
encouraging the out-of-Calgary students to take advantage of this Web opportunity.
To further spread the opportunity to students across the province, we have also invited IINA students to join in although
as of yet we have had no takers. Details are not finalized but preliminary discussions see IINA also recognizing their
share of student revenue and then sharing proportionately in the cost. This type of collaborative arrangement with
WebClasses will benefit the members of Alberta as a whole province as it will increase their options.
In Fall 09, we hope to offer another Red Deer class as well as in Lethbridge (the first in many years also).
InHouse Classes
InHouse classes at employer sites have proven to be popular again in 08/09 contributing just shy of 200 students – this
means that almost 1/3 of our students have taken advantage of this incredibly convenient learning opportunity. The
top employer contenders for offering this convenience to their employees are TD Meloche Monnex (54 students), ING
(53 students), and Cooperators (24 students). We have begun to promote this opportunity – encouraging students to
talk to their employers and for their employers to, in turn, contact IISA to discuss the possibilities and logistics. We also
believe that the convenience and benefits of this offering could sway some individuals from Distance Learning.
As a note, in 07/08, approximately 210 students took InHouse classes – as a percentage of total 07/08 students (547) this
amounted to 39%.
Instructors
IISA is lucky to say that it has a number of outstanding Instructors who regularly go above and beyond in educating our
students. While we were always able to find an Instructors willing to step up to the plate, we were beginning to see that
we were spreading our Instructors thin with some teaching up to three classes in a semester. It is important that IISA
not over-strain our existing Instructors and, with our plans of promoting InHouse offerings as well as WebClass
offerings, we would be stretching things even thinner in the year to come.
With that in mind, in March 09 IISA began to recruit additional Instructors to add to our already impressive roster. On
March 28th and April 4th George Cooper facilitated Train the Trainer for 15 prospective Instructors. There was a lot of
talent at these sessions and in the months ahead Council will be undertaking a selection process to then set up
interviews – we hope to have a number of new Instructors ready for the Fall 09 semester.

This event is a wonderful opportunity for employees in the insurance industry to introduce their children to what Mom
and Dad do all day at the office. Feed the Minds of Youth is very positive exposure for the Insurance Institute.

Convocation 2008
Convocation 2008 was held on November 20th once again at the Palomino Room in the Roundup Centre in the
Stampede Grounds. We began the event with individual Graduate photographs – of which every Graduate took one
home that day. As well, we hosted an Industry Trade Show in which AXA, CanPro, CGI, Ecclesiastical, Mount Royal
College, RSA, Co-operators, and WICC all took booths to honour and show their support for this year’s Graduates. In
addition, ING sponsored the Graduate photos in full, the Co-operators sponsored the programs in full, and Godfrey-
Morrow sponsored the musical entertainment in full. Thank you all for your support of this great event.
For the main portion of the event, Leah Strader-Goled, President of the IISA, acted as Master of Ceremonies and we were
pleased to have Peter Hohman, MBA, FCIP, ICD.D, President and CEO of The Insurance Institute of Canada, as our special
guest and speaker.
We are delighted to report that 335 people attended. Five graduates received GIE certificates, seventy-six graduates
received CIP certificates (two with Honours) and twenty -two graduates received FCIP certificates (three with Honours).
We were also pleased to have our graduates earn four National prizes. Please see the later section in this Annual Report
for the names of this year’s honoured graduates.
This year also saw the delivery of a very special award to a very special person. Louise Bevan-Stewart, long-term
supporter and advocate of the Institute, was presented with the Award of Merit, a prestigious national award
recognizing extraordinary volunteer support and dedication.
Social Events
CIP Society Events
On December 9th IISA delivered its hugely successful second Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra event. The special guest of
the night was famous fiddler Natalie MacMaster. 60 individuals attended the event – one broker even worked it into his
office’s Season Celebration.
Everyone was also thrilled to enjoy the AXA Pacific sponsored hors d’oeuvres and wine before the performance.
Newsletter
After being silent for some time, the IISA newsletter, vIISA-vis ran its three scheduled editions: Spring 08, Fall 08, and
Winter 09. An email is sent out to the membership directing them to the web-link for the posting.
Finance Committee
Please refer to the Audited Financial Statements for the fiscal year 2008-2009 in the final section of this Annual Report.
A small deficit of $7380 has been reported for the Academic budget. However, due to some incorrect processes in
07/08, this number does include some residual 07/08 issues. The CIP Society reported a surplus.
The majority of our marketing efforts are via emails to our membership and various industry lists.
Caroline Logan and her IINA counterpart Wanda Wylie attended the IBAA Convention in Calgary in May 2008 as well
both attended the PYBS Convention in October 2008 and manned an Institute booth.

A solid group of students comprised the officers of the Association of Risk Management and Insurance (ARMI) over the
past year with Colin Wight serving as the year’s President. His effort built upon those of previous year to create good
value through the corporate partnership with ING and to launch a formal alumni mentoring program. An outstanding
executive is in place to take over the leadership of the club in 2009-2010.
Research efforts that has achieved significant progress but that has not appeared in print appear as working papers on
the Haskayne School of Business web site where copyright permits. Anyone interested in monitoring our research

The Risk Studies Centre facilitated two presentations to Calgary professionals and academic colleagues:
• Dr. Dan Anderson, Leslie P. Schultz Professor of Risk Management and Insurance, presented "Sustainability Risk
Management and Business Opportunities" on February 25, 2009. The event was co-sponsored a seminar with
the Institute for Resource Industries and Sustainability (IRIS).
• Dr. Jean-François Outreville, Adjunct Professor HEC, "Internationalization, Performance and Volatility: The
World's Largest Financial Groups" on February 27, 2009.
On the personnel front, Barbara Merlihan joined us as chair secretary in early February and is working Monday-Thursday.
David Chan’s position converted from what was formerly called a “trust employee” into a regular University
appointment. Dr. Ryan Lee continues in his three-year appointment as the Associate Dean of Haskayne’s Undergraduate
Program. The selection process is underway to appoint the first Great West Life Canada Life London Life Faculty Fellow in
Personal Financial Planning.
Overall, I am pleased to report that the risk management and insurance group within the Haskayne School of Business
at the University of Calgary once again had a busy and productive year.

Bylaw Changes
1. Proposal to remove the Secretary-Treasurer position from the Executive Committee roster by deleting it in clause XI(1)(a)
and deleting the responsibilities in clause XI(1)(c)(iv).
Motion tabled
Christopher Trollope expressed concern in relation to this request, and referred to the Alberta Societies Act and suggested that
to fully remove a Treasurer/Secretary position from an executive committee, the committee must first declare themselves a (1)
an advisory committee structure, as opposed to a board of director’s structure, or (2) change the bylaws to indicate that
whenever any position is vacant, it must be temporarily be taken over by the president, and efforts to replace the position must
be immediately taken. The decision was made that more direction and advice is needed from the IIC, as well as the other
Institutes, as well as the fact that more information is needed on the Alberta Societies Act.
Action Item: Christopher Trollope to gather information on the Alberta Societies Act, and distribute to the President, as well as
the Manager of the Insurance Institute of Southern Alberta.
Action Item: Caroline Logan to gain direction from IIC.
3. Proposed to add Past President to the Executive Committee in clause XI(1)(a) and description of the role’s responsibilities in
clause XI(1)(c)(iv).
Motion approved
4. Proposed to add clause describing attendance requirements of Executive Committee members as well as repercussions to
member for not adhering to such in clause XI(1)(c)(vi).
Motion Approved
5. Proposed to add clause XI(3)(d) to formalize a Council spot for member(s) from other duly constituted insurance
organizations.
