ETHICS

Q4: How do your answers to Q1 & Q2 compare with the group answer to Q3? identify your main motivation
that made you decide as you did in Part 1. Particularly, identify what level of moral development you think you
were employing and what ethical framework you were using whether consciously or unconsciously. State any
insights you may have had based on your reflections.

Based on my answers from Q1 and Q2, even though the policy does not directly relate to abortion, I

believe that it can be similar to what our group answered for Q3 since it was able to focus on providing a

method for women to make informed choices through Prenatal Screening. Our policy, which is to make prenatal

screening available to all women, allows women and mothers to have the freedom of choice based on the results

of their tests, as we provide an option to have consultations and referrals available. With this, the policy is

helpful for women as it allows them to have the capacity to decide, be prepared, and be more educated

regarding their situation, especially when it comes to having a child with genetic disorders.

While answering Part 1 of the activity, I also tried looking at the whole picture and putting myself in the

shoes of women facing a similar situation. With this, I believe that the motivation for my decision is also based

on the ethical framework of Utilitarianism as I took into consideration how women are supposed to have a

choice regarding this matter. In our society and as a country predominated by Catholics and Christians, it is

evident that abortion is still an existing taboo and even illegal. However, several Filipinos are living in poverty,

and it is significant to be able to provide those who are experiencing financial instability and insufficient

resources a choice in the events of the situation mentioned. Likewise, having a child is a heavy responsibility,

especially when genetic disorders are present, as this will be a lifelong commitment. Moreover, I also believe

that it would be beneficial in a way that would decrease the number of children who will only live with constant

pain and difficulty brought upon by the defect. Likewise, the answers from both activities were also aligned

with the Post conventional Level of Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development, particularly Stage 5, as we have

made a decision that promotes individual rights that focuses on how moral rules are beneficial for all.
