REACTION PAPER
Should Abortion be Legalized?

Unwanted pregnancy is possible to happen for most couples. Not only for the
couples, it is also possible for the rape victims and sex workers. Yet, are there ways for
them to get rid of unwanted pregnancies? Are these morally right for them to do such
thing? And are these serve as birth controls?

Abortion is a solution for other women to get rid with unwanted pregnancies. It
has two procedures, the surgical and medication abortion. Surgical abortion uses
medical tools to manually remove the contents of a pregnant woman’s uterus, while in
medication abortion, it is also called abortion pills wherein the pregnant woman will take
pills and it takes months to induce pregnancy.

In addition, other sources said that abortion solves overpopulation. Unplanned

pregnancies would not be born and can help countries to control their population. This
would minimize the rapid population growth and help women who are unprepared to be
mothers. Women who chose to do these procedures have this last option to have a
better life for them. Maybe they are single and just got pregnant, or they are just victims
of rape and got traumatized.

They argue that it is their body and it is their rule, they don’t care about what
other people think about them because they are the one who will suffer if they will
continue their unplanned pregnancies. Socioeconomic factors also come into play, as
unplanned pregnancies can significantly impact a woman’s education, career, and
overall economic stability. Legalizing abortion is seen by some as means to address
these complexities.

Abortion is a very controversial issue. It involves legal, ethical and moral

considerations. All of these factors oppose abortion because it is believed that abortion
is a crime because it is an act of killing. Even though fetus is not yet fully developed, it is
still human in progress inside the womb. In religion, it is really morally wrong to kill and
abortion is one of it. That is why it is illegal in the Philippines because religion opposes
it.

In addition, opponents of legalizing abortion raise moral and ethical concerns,

arguing that the fetus has a right to life and terminating a pregnancy is tantamount to
ending a potential life. Abortion is really a higher risk procedure for the pregnant woman
and for its baby inside the womb. The result is not guaranteed especially in abortion pills
because sometimes the fetus will survive and there are many risks like disabilities that
the baby will have after birth. According to the study, babies who were attempted to
abort will have disabilities like dismembered legs and arms, mental disorders and many
more. It would be worser for the part of the baby and for the mother.
These deeply-held beliefs should be considered with seriousness and respect.
Exploring alternative approaches that focus on comprehensive sex education, increase
access to contraceptives and improve support systems for pregnant women may offer
potential middle grounds. Abortion should not be legalized instead Filipinos must be
open in sex education to open the minds of teenagers and women.

Sex education is not about teaching people on how to do it, but to tell them the
consequences of it and to teach them how to use contraceptives to prevent unwanted
pregnancy. It is also important to learn about contraceptives to avoid sexually
transmitted diseases. Although, contraceptives are not hundred percent effective and
most of it have side effects but it is their choice if they want to use one of it either they
will get pregnant.

I believe that adoption is also one of the best options to have rather than
abortion. If the pregnant woman does not want the baby after its birth, she can have it
adopt to other person who really wants to have a baby especially to the infertile couples.
There are adoption facilities that can process legal adoption and they also rescue
abandoned babies.

Abortion should not be legalized considering that I am a firm believer of Jesus

Christ and that matter contradicts how my faith runs. Instead of making favor of it, we
must tighten the policies, principles and rules about family planning. Through these,
unplanned pregnancy can be lessened, therefore abortion can be prevented.

People must be aware about the consequences of unprotected sex and must
responsible and accountable for it. There are women who regretted doing abortion
because it affected their body and health. As individuals, we must be knowledgeable of
unprotected sex in able for us to prevent the negative results that will also affect our
lives forever. We must always pray that God will guide us always to make good
decisions in life. Yes, we have our own body and rules, but we must align our decisions
to our values, beliefs and principles in our lives to distinguish right from wrong.

Women who undergone abortion, most of them regretted it because of the abrupt
decision that they made while experiencing deep emotions while they are pregnant.
Sometimes, they got depressed and took their own lives. Also, most women moved on
and continue their lives but they are unhappy and having nightmares.

For the rape victims, they are mentally distracted because of what happened to
them, that is why having a strong support system is really important for them. Inspiring
them to continue their lives and motivating them to be tougher in life without getting rid
of the baby in their womb because I believe that the baby is out of the sin of the rapist. It
is a gift that must be treasured. Abortion is a choice but there are options that need to
be considered without killing the baby.
