Three-Dimensional Space

SL3.1
Revision Q1:
Two points have coordinates A(4 , 1) and B(9, 4), respectively. Find:
a) the distance of interval [AB]
b) the midpoint of interval [AB]
c) the equation of line AB

Three Dimensional Coordinate Geometry
In three dimensions, the formulae for distance and midpoint
are extended. The equations of straight lines are also simple,
but not covered in SL.
Example 1:
a) Find the distance between the points (1, 3, 5) and ( − 2, 3, 0).

b) Find the midpoint of the points (1, 3, 5) and ( − 2, 3, 0).

Example 2:
The distance of the point ( − 4, a, 3a) from the origin is 4160.
Find two possible values of a.
Example 3:
The midpoint of the of the line joining points A(2, p, 8) and B(−6, 5, q) has
coordinates (−2, 3, − 5).
Find the length of line segment [AB].
Surface Area and Volume
These are the formulae that are provided for surface area and volume:
What you need to be able to do:
The syllabus states on page 45:

Volume and surface area of three-dimensional solids

including right-pyramid, right cone, sphere, hemisphere
and combinations of these solids.

In problems related to these topics, students should be able

to identify relevant right-angled triangles in three-
dimensional objects and use them to find unknown lengths
and angles.
Example 4:
Find the surface area of the hemishpere.
Example 5:
Find the surface area and volume of the composite solid.
Example 5:
Find the surface area and volume of the composite solid.
Example 6:
Find the surface area and volume of the pyramid.
Example 6:
Find the surface area and volume of the pyramid.
Example 7:
The diagram shows a solid made by joining a solid
hemisphere to a solid circular cone. The centre of the
plane face of the cone coincides with the centre of the
plane face of the hemisphere.
The radius of the hemisphere is 3 cm. The volume of the solid is 33π cm 3 .
Find the surface area of the solid in terms of π .
