What is TERMITE (WHITE-ANTS)? “TERMITES (WHITE-ANTS)" as they are commonly known live in communities forming colonies. “THE HIDDEN ENEMY OF ALL HOMES AND PROBABLY THE MOST SILENT OF THEM ALL” Termites Constitutes a separate order of insects called ‘ISEPTORA’. They are found in soil, damage wooden {and building materials. Every colony has a queen who reproduces in thousands and is surrounded by worker ents who guard the colony and look for food which include wood and cellulose materials which they eat and digest. It is, therefore, the worker termites which does damage to building structures heavily. They travel long distance to inhabited areas and prefer well aerated places which ‘are dug deep, for exomple new construction site. 2. How do TERMITE (WHITE-ANTS) attack and damage buildings? “TERMITES (WHITE-ANTS)"” enter buildings and structure undetected from below damaging the foundation and spreading to upper floors through joints, wall cavities and the inter-space of brick ‘and stonework. This way not only brick and stonework but even the RCC columns and beams cannot resits “TERMITE (WHITE-ANT)” attack. Iron when rusts expands and provides channels for “Termites” to enter upper floors. “TERMITE (WHITE-ANTS)” are highly destructive to buildings and woodwork, which they eat up and hollow out buildings and woodwork. They even penetrate the sheathing of electrical wires thus causing short circuit and fire. 3, How to control this “TERMITES (WHITE-ANTS)” Menace? Worker “TERMITES (WHITE-ANTS)" have nests the soil and it is essential for them to return to the soil. The basic of “TERMITES (WHITE-ANTS)" control is to break the contact between the building {foundation ond soil, making it difficult to reach the building foundation from soil. A chemical barrier is created which destroys the “TERMITES (WHITE-ANTS)” completely as soon as they come in contact with this chemical barrier. ‘4, What are Pre or Post construction Anti-Termite soil treatment services? Pre or Post construction Anti-Termite soil treatment services are highly recommended by :~ ()) REGISTRATION COMMITTEE (Ministry of Agriculture-Govt. of india) (li) CENTRAL INSECTICIDES BOARD (Govt. of India) (iii) BUILDINGS RESEARCH INSTITUTE, ROORKEE (Govt. of India) (iv) BUREAU OF INDIAN STANDARDS (Govt. of India) in “code of practices for Anti-Termite measures in buildings” (IS 6313:2001-Part-Il and Part-I!) Pre and Post construction anti-termite (white-ants) soil treatment services are carried out in building foundation to protect the building from attacks of “TERMITES (WHITE-ANTS)” and “Borers” etc. Which appears in buildings within 2 to 4 years after the completion of the building. This is due to the monsoon type of climate of India which supports the growth of “TERMITES (WHITE-ANTS)" and “BORERS”. Hence, to protect the building in the long run Pre or Post construction anti-termite soil treatment (TERMITE CONTROL) should be carried out. 5, Types of “TERMITES (WHITE-ANTS)”: ‘on the basis of their habitat, “TERMITES (WHITE-ANTS)"” are divided into types (0). Subterranean termites or ground nesting termites. b). Non-subterranean or wood nesting termites having mo contact with soil. The subterranean termites are most destructive and are mainly responsible for the damages caused inthe building, they form nests or colonies underground in the soil and some specivs Mov construct aeons ical or dome shoped mound. These colonies may persist for many years and os they mature they contain a population running into millions. 6. Recommendation for carrying out Pre or Post Construction Anti ~ termite soil treatment ‘services by various research institutes and government organisations (i) Recommendation of various Research Institutes for Pre or Post construction Anti-termite soil services (TERMITE CONTROL) in building foundation is recommended by:- (A) Dow agrosciences of USA. Termiticides to be used & their ratios: Termiticides are generally of two types, One that repel termites and the other, which kill termites. Termiticides that repel are risky because foraging termites can randomly attack the home by finding a break in the defense barrier. Chlorinated Hydro-carbons such as Aldrin, Heptachlor and Chlordane were most widely used termiticides having very long residual effect. However, due to their persistent nature these chemicals were withdrawn all over the world, as an alternative other chemicals from Organophosphates and Synthetic Phyrethroids were being used as Termiticides. These chemicals have disadvantages as they act as repelient. The termites in search of food always look for breach or break in the chemical barrier, it has been noticed that this is broken due to various reasons at the time of construction. Termite by its acute sense can immediately notice this and enter the premises. Termites are known to the hidden invaders. By the time, we notice their presence mostly accidentally it turns out to be the tip of the iceberg. The new generation termiticides, which is being used is based on different molecule, environmentally very safe os concentration and quality to be used is very low. This chemical does not repel termites. It has lethal action on termites. When the termites pass through the treated zone, these forges pick up residues on their bodies as well as in tthe food. The chemical start working within few days killing these forges and other colony members {due to their grooming and typical feeding habit such as mouth to mouth and from anus to mouth. In the process, the entire colony population dwindles very rapidly and the colony itself gets eliminated which could not be achieved by the conventional repellent termiticides. Any one of the following chemicals ~ which are effective when applied uniformly over the areas to be treated shall be used in water emulsion for the soil treatment with the concentration shown against it.
