How to replace a CR

roaster gearbox

Overview: This guide will walk you through the replacement of the gearbox. We will need to remove the
existing gearbox/motor setup, disconnect the motor, then connect it to the new gearbox and then
reassemble everything.
Read through the instructions before beginning and contact Diedrich Tech Support if you have any
questions.

Tools Needed:
1/2” socket driver #2 Phillips screwdriver
6” extension 3/16 Allen wrench
3/4” socket 1/8 Allen wrench
3/4” wrench 9/16” wrench
7/16” wrench Crescent wrench

Supplies Needed:
Shop towels/rags Grease gun
Coupling grease, high temp (500°) 2 x 1/4” NPT Zerk fitting
Blue Loctite thread locker

Disconnect power to roaster.


Mark the outline of the gearbox on the rear deck.
Remove 4 Phillips screws to open motor wire box. (picture 1)
Take picture of wire connections.
Disconnect wires – they are connected under wire nuts. Keep wire nuts for
reinstallation.

Disconnect conduit from motor wiring box using the crescent wrench.
Using 9/16” wrench, remove bolts connecting motor to gearbox. (picture 2)
When removing the motor, keep track of the key that sits in the slot on the
shaft.
Set motor aside for now.

Using 7/16” wrench, remove bolts to bearing cover. (picture 3)
Put rags under coupler assembly. The coupler is packed with grease and
you’ll need to wipe it clean.
Using 3/16 Allen wrench, remove 4 Allen bolts from coupler assembly cover –
keep track of the 4 nuts. They are wedged in the coupler cover but may come
loose.
Gently pry the coupler cover apart. There is a gasket between the two halves
Picture 3 that can tear. If damaged, you can purchase gasket material from local auto
parts store to replace.
Use flathead screwdriver to pry up and remove red grid line assembly.

Wipe the red grid line and coupler cover clean.
If your coupler cover does not currently have Zerk fittings:

Remove the setscrew plugs from each half of the coupler cover.
Insert the Zerk fittings in each cover half.

Note: The gearbox is aligned with shims that vary in thickness. Some
are small and paper-thin so you need to be careful when you lift the
gearbox not to lose any and take note of where they are located. They
may stick to the underside of the gearbox!
Remove the gearbox mounting bolts.

Picture 5 Carefully lift the gearbox up and off the rear deck.
Set aside gearbox.
Take a picture of the location of the shims on rear deck – they must all go
back to where they were for the reinstallation.
Loosen set screws on gearbox shaft coupler using 1/8” Allen wrench.

Remove coupler from gearbox shaft – keep track of the key.
Remove the mounting bracket from old gearbox.
Install mounting bracket on the on the new gearbox. (picture 6)
Remove breather vent from old gearbox.
Install breather vent in new gearbox. (picture 7)
Picture 7 Insert the keystock in the new gearbox shaft.
Keeping the setscrews loose, slide coupler on new gearbox shaft and over
the key. (picture 8)
Set the new gearbox on shims
Reinstall mounting bolts but leave them loose
Align gearbox with the outline

Picture 8 Line up the coupler halves allowing 1/8” gap. (picture 9)


Check that the coupler halves are flush all the way around. (picture 10)
Tighten gearbox mounting bolts, alternating between them until they are all snug.

Recheck that the coupler halves are still flush.


Retighten the gearbox mounting bolts alternating in the same pattern.
Tighten setscrews on coupler using blue Loctite
Install red grid line assembly on coupler halves. (picture 11)
Reinstall cover assembly with gaskets. You should have a Zerk fitting
on opposite sides. (picture 11)

Temporarily remove one of the Zerk fittings. Attach your grease gun to
the other Zerk fitting and pump the coupler with grease until it comes out
the other hole. Replace Zerk fitting.
Wipe off any excess grease.
Reconnect motor to gearbox
Reconnect conduit to wiring box on motor

Power up the roaster.
Turn on the drum motor to test the rotation – does everything move
smoothly? Is drum turning clockwise when viewed from the front? Any
strange sounds?
If everything is working as it should:
Reinstall motor wiring cover.
Reinstall coupler cover.

If the drum is turning counter clockwise when viewed from the front:
Check your motor wiring

If you hear squeaking/grinding:
