OVERVIEW

This document provides a guide to the user in setting up a Sepura radio and associated
connections to initiate and use packet data over TETRA for Sepura radio software
versions.up to and including V8.0.

The radio provides, in Trunked mode, a TETRA bearer service for applications that connect to
the radio and use the IP protocol for communications.

• External applications use this service by connecting via the PEI interface.
• The radio supports TETRA standard single-slot and multi-slot packet data.
• The radio supports IP version 4.
• The radio routes IP packets independently of the protocol using IP (e.g. FTP, WAP).

An IP connection is established between the Radio and the device connected to the PEI port
of the radio, allowing the external applications to communicate with the Radio using
predefined IP addresses.

Communication to the device connected externally to the radio via the PEI port is established
using AT commands which are defined in the TETRA PEI standard and detailed in the Sepura
Data Interface User Guide.

IP ADDRESSING

NETWORK ADDRESSING

An IP address may be assigned to the requesting application by the TETRA Network during
the Packet Data context activation. When assigned, this address is used by both the radio
and connected application as the source address in IP packets to be delivered to the
infrastructure, and received as a destination address of the IP packets received from the
infrastructure.

LOCAL ADDRESSING

By default both Radio and connected application have their own IP addresses: "10.0.0.100"
and "10.0.0.101" respectively. These addresses are used by the Radio and connected
application for local packet transmissions and are not transmitted to the network
infrastructure.

Static and Dynamic addresses

Static or dynamic operation is configured in the Radio. If the radio IP address in the
configuration of the radio is set to a non-zero value the static IP address specified is used
when connecting to the TETRA network. If static IP addressing is selected then the remote
application should be configured appropriately to allow the connection to proceed. If the IP
address configured in the radio is set to zero, then the radio will use an address assigned by
the network infrastructure.

USER AUTHENTICATION

User authentication is a method of authenticating the Application user before allowing

activation of the packet data link. Authentication is performed by an authentication centre
connected to the network infrastructure. The radio acts only as a relay for the messages
between the application and the network infrastructure.

The radio will offer PPP user authentication between the authentication centre and the radio
using PAP or CHAP before the IP link is established.

If the network infrastructure does not agree to the authentication method it can reject it.

RADIO USER INTERFACE

RADIO DISPLAY
The radio shows an indication to the radio user whenever the Packet Data context is active.
An active Packet Data context is shown by displaying a symbol depicting the world in the top
right hand corner of the radio display. There is no other indication on the user interface of the
radio to indicate activity on the packet data link.

AT COMMAND INTERFACE
The radio supports the ETSI AT Command set for activating packet data. See the Sepura
Data Interface User Guide for more details.

Set the Baud rate to 38400
Unselect “wait for dial tone before dialling”

Select the Port Settings TAB

Set the connection preferences to:

Data bits: 8 Stop Bits: 1 Parity: None Flow Control: None

Select the TCP/IP TAB

If you are using network assigned addresses (DHCP), select “use server assigned IP
address”. If static IP addressing is required, enter the IP addresses assigned.

Tick, “Use software compression” and “Use IP header compression”

Select the Servers TAB

If you are using network assigned addresses (DHCP), select “use server assigned
addresses”. If static IP addressing is required, enter the IP addresses assigned.

When using a device running Pocket PC, ensure that the action of the ATZ
command (Reset to default configuration) is set to “reset”, rather than “reboot the
radio”. Pocket PC devices send as default an ATZ command as a pre-amble to
sending an ATD command. If the radio is not configured correctly, the Pocket PC
device will re-boot the radio and prevent a packet data context from being
established.

CREATING A PACKET DATA SESSION FROM LINUX

Below is an example for setting up the connection from a Linux environment.

PPP should be started with the following chat script:
pppd connect ‘chat –v “” ATDT*99# CONNECT’ /dev/cua0 38400 crtscts modem noipdefault defaultroute mtu 576
:10.0.0.4
(The trailing “:10.0.0.4” gives an address to the otherwise address-less link. )
The ppp options file should contain the following (shown for the login “fred”):
ipcp-accept-local
ipcp-accept-remote
lock
name fred

If authentication is enabled entries will need to be added to pap-secrets

Example:
fred * password
user * pass

(The second line may be necessary if the SwMI challenges the Linux box). If chap is available
then add entries to chap-secrets.

RADIO CONFIGURATION

The following screen shots show typical settings for a packet data enabled radio. This is a
general configuration aimed at working with most infrastructures and may not be the most
efficient configuration for all circumstances. It is recommended that to get the best
performance from Packet Data, tuning of the IP parameters should be on a system wide
basis.

Further information is available from Sepura Customer Support.

NETWORK TEMPLATE - SNDCP PARAMETERS

Some applications may require parameter VJ Compression to be set to disabled

If Multi-slot Packet Data is supported by the network and is required then parameter
Maximum Supported PD Size [slots] should be set to 4.

There is a risk that the terminal may behave in an unexpected way if the network
does not support Multi-slot Packet Data and the parameter Maximum Supported PD
Size [slots] is set to 4.

parameter PPP Link Inactivity Timeout to zero.

Some applications may require both LCP compression parameters disabled

PROFILE TEMPLATE - GENERAL PEI PARAMETERS

When using a device running Pocket PC, ensure that the action of the ATZ
command (parameter Reset to default configuration on template above) is set to “Do
not reboot the radio”, rather than “Reboot the radio”. Pocket PC devices send as
default an ATZ command as a pre-amble to sending an ATD command. If the radio is
not configured correctly the Pocket PC device will re-boot the radio and prevent a
packet data context from being established.

After Programming, it is advisable to perform a controlled shutdown and restart of the

radio to ensure the serial port is active in the correct mode.

FAQ

Why is one of the following error messages generated when attempting to enter the
dial string for ATD command *99# when the terminal is in packet data mode?

Error number 27
Error number 777
Error number 628

This occurs because when the terminal is operating in packet data mode the logical ports
must be set to swapped over. This can be done using Radio Manager to edit the Profile
template and select the General PEI Parameters, then select the Parameters tab, and then
set Serial Port Usage to Swapped. Please see screen shot and section on Profile Template
– General PEI Parameters.
If using a mobile or Gateway terminal and the Serial Port Usage has been correctly set up,
the error may have been generated because the data cable is not attached to the correct
external interface. In this case disconnect it and reconnect it to the other external interface.
