1. PURPOSE

This specification, and associated documents, governs the minimum requirements for the
design, construction, testing and delivery of Power Transformers to be installed on Floating
Production Installations.

This includes all materials, procurement, fabrication/construction, inspection, testing,


preparation for delivery and documentation as outlined below.

Power transformers above 5MVA are outside the scope of this specification and must be
considered on a case by case basis.

3. DEFINITIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS

3.1 GENERAL DEFINITIONS

May: indicates a course of actions that is permissible within the limit of the
standard (a permission).
Shall: indicates an absolute requirement which shall be followed strictly in
order to conform to the standard.
Should: indicates a recommendation. Alternative solutions having the same
functionality and quality are acceptable.
COMPANY: SBM Offshore or as indicated in the contract or purchase order.

CONTRACTOR: the Supplier, Manufacturer, or Vendor of the goods and/or services


described in the Equipment/Material Specifications and designated
as such in the contract or purchase order.

PURCHASER: means the company designated in the general conditions of contract


or the successor in interest of such company, or the permitted
assignee of such company or such successor in interest.

4. SCOPE OF SUPPLY

CONTRACTOR’s scope of supply shall include, but not necessarily be limited to, Power
Transformer comprising of the following:

• Earthing bullets with spider and clamping tools


• HV termination kit
• Cable glands, if specified
• Multi Cable Transit (MCT)
• Spare parts
• Special tools, if applicable.

5. FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS

5.1 RULES AND REGULATIONS


R Where the Power Transformer is part of a system used to supply services other than Oil or
Gas Production, the transformer shall comply with ABS doc. ref. [1], Part 4 – Vessel
Systems and Machinery, Chapter 8 – Electrical Systems:

R Power transformers for MODU are to be constructed and installed in accordance with the
requirements of ABS doc. ref. [2].

5.2 HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT


5.2.1 Dry-type Transformer
5.2.1.1 Fire Behaviour Class - Class F1

S
Transformers subject to a fire hazard. Restricted flammability is required. The emission of toxic
substances and opaque smokes shall be minimised in accordance with IEC doc. ref. [3], Part-
11.

5.2.2 Liquid-Immersed Transformer


5.2.2.1 Insulating Liquid
S The insulating liquid shall provide the combination of fire safety and environmental protection
properties such as:

• High fire point (>300°C)


• Classified as K-class
• Resistance to ignition
• Self-extinguishing
• Biodegradable
• Non-water hazardous
• Non-toxic and not harmful to aquatic life
• Will not evaporate into the environment.

S The use of dielectric fluid containing PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) or PCTs


(polychlorinated terphenyls) is prohibited.

5.3 PERFORMANCE
Power transformers shall be suitable for continuous duty at the rated power and specified
ambient conditions on all taps without exceeding the temperature rise and without any
deleterious effect of any kind.

Transformer lightning impulse withstand voltage or basic insulation level (BIL), temperature
ratings, over-voltage operation, fault current capability and the losses, impedance, and ratios
shall be within the tolerances in accordance with IEC doc. ref. [3].

5.3.1 Design Lifetime


CONTRACTOR shall design and fabricate the transformer for a minimum operation as
specified in project specifications, in the offshore environment.

5.3.2 Hazardous Area


Liquid-immersed transformers installed in a hazardous classified area shall be suitable for
Zone 2, Gas Group IIA and Temperature Class T3, unless otherwise specified in the
datasheet.

The transformers shall be designed, selected and erected in accordance with IEC doc. ref. [4]
Part-14; inspected and maintained in accordance with IEC doc. ref. [4] Part-17.
Note: Vendor shall submit training and competency records to demonstrate the personnel who are
installing Ex-certified equipment are qualified as per IEC60079 series requirement.

5.3.3 Non-Hazardous Area


Dry type transformers shall be installed indoors, in a non-hazardous area i.e. an area in which
an explosive atmosphere is not expected to be present.

5.3.4 Ambient Temperature and Humidity


The transformers shall be designed for the environmental conditions as stated in the project
specification, with the following exceptions:

• Maximum ambient temperature of 45°C for Topsides


• Maximum ambient temperature of 45°C for Hull, Vess el and Forepeak
• Maximum humidity: 95%.

5.3.5 Ingress Protection


The ingress protection shall be in accordance with IEC doc. ref [7].
5.3.5.1 Outdoors
IP56 unless otherwise specified in the datasheet.

IP23 unless otherwise specified in the datasheet.

5.3.6 Climate and Environmental Classes for Dry-type Transformer


5.3.6.1 Climate Class - Class C1
The transformer is suitable for operation at ambient temperature not below -5°C but may be
exposed during transport and storage to ambient temperature down to -25°C.

5.3.6.2 Environmental Class - Class E1


Occasional condensation can occur on the transformer (for example, when the transformer is
de-energised). Limited pollution is possible.

When a transformer is declared as suitable for a combination of climatic, environmental and


fire behaviour classes, those tests which prove compliance with said classes, are to be carried
out on the same transformer in the sequence given in Table 5 of IEC doc. ref. [3] Part-11.

5.3.7 Short Circuit Withstand Capability


The transformer winding shall be capable of withstanding, on any tapping, without damage,
the electro-dynamic and thermal effects of a full external short circuit on the secondary side,
with the primary side connected to an infinite system fault level. The maximum permissible
average winding temperature specified in the standards shall not be exceeded for the
specified fault duration.

CONTRACTOR shall submit a copy of a short circuit withstand test previously performed on a
"similar" transformer. Test method and definition of "similar" transformer shall be as per IEC
document ref. [3] part 5.

5.3.8 Number of energisations per year


The transformer shall be designed to withstand at least 48 energisations per year – refer to
IEC doc. ref. [3] part 1, clause 5.5 “Unusual service conditions”. CONTRACTOR shall specify
the minimum time interval between two energisations.

5.3.9 Reference Temperature


The reference temperature to which the load loss, impedance voltage and short-circuit
impedance are to be corrected to:

• Dry-type transformer (in accordance with IEC doc. ref. [3], Part-11):
120 °C
• Liquid-Immersed transformer (in accordance with IEC doc. ref. [3], Part-1):
75 °C.
5.3.10 Efficiency
CONTRACTOR shall specify the transformer efficiency at full load, p.f. = 0.8.

5.3.11 Electrical Conditions


R Transformers shall be able to operate at rated power with normal supply variations in
accordance with ABS doc. ref. [1] as following:

• Voltage: +6% / -10%,


• Frequency: ± 5%

and with a voltage waveform total harmonic distortion at any point in the distribution system
not exceeding 8% and any single order harmonics not exceeding 5%.

5.3.12 Noise Level


S Power transformers shall not exceed the following Noise Level (SPL):

• Indoor: ≤ 85 dB(A) at 1m
• Outdoor: ≤ 85 dB(A) at 1m.

Note: Engine Room ≤ 90 dB(A).

5.3.13 Vessel Motions & Accelerations


The assembly shall be designed for the vessel’s motion criteria as stated in the project
specification.

R Emergency service transformers shall be able to operate with 22.5 degree list and 10 degree
trim in accordance with ABS doc. ref. [1].

5.4 CONSTRUCTION, COMMISSIONING AND INSTALLATION


Each transformer shall have a suitable number lifting pads for complete handling and un-
tanking operation as well. A sliding skid and pulling eyes that are required for sliding shall be
provided.

5.5 OPERATIONAL AND MAINTENANCE


5.5.1 Maintenance
CONTRACTOR shall consider in his design (e.g. Sectionalize coil) the constraints of an
installation on board a floating unit, where lifting capacity is limited, access may be limited due
to compact space and movements are present.

Transformers key components that require maintenance shall be easily accessible and shall
not require full disassembly.

5.5.2 Parallel Operation


Transformers of the same rating (e.g. power rating, voltage ratio, impedance, size and winding
connection) shall be interchangeable and suitable for parallel operation.

6. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

General discipline technical requirements section defined in the GTS document ref. [11] that
are applicable to CONTRACTOR package are listed in table format in below sections.

Specific discipline technical requirements that are applicable to CONTRACTOR package are
defined in below sections.

6.1 HUMAN FACTOR ENGINEERING


CONTRACTOR shall comply with the Human Factor Engineering requirements section of
GTS document ref. [11] as defined in below table.

6.3.1 Materials and Corrosion Protection

6.3.1.2 Surface Preparation and Coating Application


Testing and inspection for Liquid-immersed Transformers shall be as per level 1 requirements.

6.3.1.3 Equipment colour coating


The colour of the final coat for dry type transformers should be RAL 7032.

6.4.1 Dry-Type Transformers


The transformer shall be installed indoor, in an environmentally controlled area.
6.4.1.1 Winding Insulation System and Class
HV/LV dry-type transformers shall be cast-resin HV windings and vacuum pressure
impregnated (VPI) LV windings with an insulating Class F. The temperature rise shall not
exceed the Class F requirements as per IEC doc. ref. [3] Part-11, paragraph 11.1, Table 2.

LV/LV dry-type transformers shall be vacuum pressure impregnated (VPI) with an insulating
Class H. The temperature rise shall not exceed the Class F requirements as per IEC doc. ref.
[3] Part-11, paragraph 11.1, Table 2.

In case of an ambient air temperature above the standard conditions (refer to paragraph 5.3.4,
the temperature rise shall be reduced as per paragraph 11.2 of IEC doc. ref. [3] Part-11.
6.4.1.2 Accessories
Dry type transformers shall be provided with the following accessories unless otherwise
specified in project particular specification:

• Temperature indicator
• All transformers that are greater than 50kVA shall have embedded winding temperature
detectors for temperature (overload) monitoring, as follows:
• HV/LV dry-type transformers shall have thermal protection by means PT 100 resistance
type temperature detectors (minimum one active and one spare measurement per
phase) with alarm and trip relays by others
• LV/LV dry-type transformers shall have thermal protection by means of thermistors type
temperature detectors or PT100 (as specified in project documentation, minimum one
measurement per phase) with alarm and trip relays by others

• Air to water heat exchanger shall be equipped with water leak detector (applicable to
AF/WF transformers only)
S • Each transformer shall be provided with an anti-condensation heater to be connected to
a 230VAC, 1-ph, and 60Hz supply provided by PURCHASER.

6.4.2 Liquid-Immersed Transformer


For transformers that are installed outdoors, the accessory devices (such as fans and alarm
switches) shall be suitable for the hazardous classified area in accordance with IEC doc. ref.
[4], Part-14.

For transformers installed in hazardous area, provision shall be made to prevent electrostatic
discharges in accordance with IEC doc. ref. [4], Part-14.
6.4.2.1 Insulation Class
The insulation shall be class A and temperature rise as follows:

• 55°C where the liquid is cooled by air


• 68°C where the liquid is cooled by water

6.4.2.2 Insulating Liquid


S The dielectric fluid shall be synthetic ester, MIDEL 7131, conforming to IEC doc. ref. [8].
6.4.2.3 Accessories
Liquid immersed hermetically sealed type transformers shall be provided with the following
accessories unless otherwise specified in project particular specification:

• Drain and filling valve (including sampling)

• Top liquid dial type thermometer with alarm contact
• PT100 (1 + 1 spare per each winding)
R • Transformer Protection Relay providing the following alarms and protections, as per

6.4.3 Magnetic Circuit


Core assemblies shall be made from high quality, non-ageing grain oriented electrical grade
silicon steel laminations with insulating coating on both sides.

The core laminations shall be accurately cut with alternative lap joints having minimum air gap
and rigidly clamped to result in an assembly with minimum core loss and noise generation.

The core shall preferably be of a boltless construction, i.e. the complete magnetic circuit free
from bolt holes. These structures shall also support windings and shall be provided with lifting
lugs suitable for the total transportation weight.

S The core assembly shall be earthed by a single removable test link, connected to the
transformer grounding terminal or bar.

For three phase transformers, three-limb core-form shall be used.

6.4.4 Windings
R Each HV/LV transformer shall be provided with an earthed metallic screen between each
primary and secondary winding, for the purpose of protecting the LV windings from dangerous
voltage from the HV windings, as per ABS doc. ref. [1]. The metallic screen shall be sized to
withstand the HV winding earth fault current of the intensity and duration indicated in project
documentation.

Windings shall be of copper or aluminium and uniformly insulated as specified in the


datasheet.

Where aluminium windings are utilized for liquid-immersed transformer, the winding to terminal
pad connection should also be liquid-immersed.

6.4.4.1 Winding connection


Unless otherwise specified in the datasheet, the winding connection symbol for transformers
shall be:

• For power transformers : Dyn11 (Delta/Wye),


• For earthing transformers : YN-d (open).
Note: Earthing resistor to be connected at open delta

Refer to Project Transformer Datasheet, as detailed in GTS doc. ref. [12].

6.4.5 Tap Changers


Unless otherwise specified in project datasheet, power transformers shall be equipped with
de-energized tap-changers (DETC) on the highest voltage winding. Tap changers shall comply
with the applicable parts of IEC doc. ref. [5].

Tap changer box for outdoor transformers shall be suitable for Zone 2, IIA, and T3 or better.

6.4.5.1 Dry-type Transformer


De-energized tap-changers (DETC) for dry-type transformers shall consist of a multi-position
link.

6.4.5.2 Liquid-immersed Transformer

without a tool and shall be installed in an easily accessible location to avoid any potential risk

S The tap-changer driving rod shall be sealed against air or liquid leakage and the design shall
be such that it may be set only into the predefined positions where the winding is connected
(no intermediate position with winding disconnected).

S The tap positions shall be clearly marked and a padlocking facility shall be provided to lock the
tap-changer switch in the selected position.

6.4.6 Power Cables Termination


For dry type transformers power cables termination shall be within the transformer enclosure;
no terminal box is required. The HV power connections and HV windings interconnection bars
shall be located on the opposite side of the LV power connections and LV windings
interconnection bars.

The minimum air clearance of non-insulated parts shall be:

• HV - as per ABS doc. ref. [1] 4.8.5 - 3.7.1(a) e.g. 120mm for 11kV nominal voltage
• LV (all voltages) - 25mm

The minimum creepage distance shall be:

• HV - as per ABS doc. ref. [1] 4.8.5 - 3.7.1 (d) table i) e.g. 150mm for 11kV nominal
voltage
• LV (all voltages) - 35mm.

The transformer enclosure shall be equipped with windows for infrared inspection of the cable
connections and coils interconnections bolting.

For liquid immersed transformers power cables shall be terminated inside terminal boxes
suitable for Zone 2, IIA and T3 or better, unless otherwise specify in the datasheet.

In either case, adequate space shall be provided:

• To connect the specified number and size of cables including its HV termination
• To allow the conductors straight connection to the terminals without introducing
excessive cable bending within the enclosure/box, especially if multicore cables are
used
• To avoid applying stress to the bushings and terminations.

Cable entry shall be via cable glands. Multi Cable Transits may be used on indoor
transformers instead of cable glands, if specified in the datasheet.

R Non-magnetic gland plates shall be provided for mounting of cable glands for single core
cables in accordance with ABS doc. ref. [1].

6.4.6.1 HV connection
For each HV/LV Transformer the primary HV connection side shall be provided with:

• Liquid immersed transformers: Euromold (Elastimold) termination and connection kits for
each cable termination
• Dry type transformers: bolted lugs HV termination kit.
Kits shall be supplied based on cable information provided in the datasheet.

If required, supports shall be provided for incoming / outgoing power cables.

6.4.6.2 LV connection
The flags shall have insulated mechanical supports at both sides suitable for the short circuit
level at the secondary side. Measures against galvanic corrosion between aluminium windings
and copper flags shall be provided. (If aluminium windings are utilized, special precautions
should be taken at the terminations).

Size of the flags shall be designed to accommodate multiple cables.

If required, supports shall be provided for incoming / outgoing power cables.

If connections to windings are specified by bus duct, the bus-duct and its flange shall be
supplied by others, however all connecting bus-bar, nuts and bolts and other accessories shall
be provided by CONTRACTOR.

In this case flexible bus-bar shall be used for the connection of bus duct.

6.4.7 Auxiliary Terminal and Control Box


All measuring control, alarms and auxiliary wiring shall be terminated in a single junction box.
Power circuit (230V, current transformer circuits) and IS loops shall be segregated using
individual junction boxes. The connection diagram shall be indelibly marked on the terminal
face of each individual junction box cover.

For cable to the PT100 / PTC, junction box shall be provided with a cable support (flat bar) for
internal wiring. The temperature sensors for the windings shall be clearly marked and wires
shall be marked according to terminal number of terminal strip.

Each junction box shall have an earth bolt at the outside for bonding to the transformer
assembly. For GRP junction boxes, this bolt shall terminate at the inside to provide an earthing
means inside the junction box to the protective earth (PE) bar.

All indoor junction boxes shall have Ingress protection to IP44 and shall be suitable for marine
type installation.

Cable entry into junction boxes shall be from the bottom.

Contractor shall supply cable glands for the cables in his scope of supply. For liquid filled
transformers for outdoors installation, cable glands shall be certified, nickel plated brass
material, Hawke or CMP manufactured compression or displacement seal type with ISO

metric threads.

For dry type transformers located indoors in non-hazardous areas, cable glands shall be
general industrial type.

All outdoor junction boxes shall be stainless steel 316L, Ex e, and IP66.

High quality stainless steel 316L fixings / hinges shall be used to connect the gland plates and
door to the enclosure chassis. Metal to metal contact shall be maintained throughout the
connection of all the independent components.

Terminal strips shall be mounted on a stainless steel 316L back plate or support rail. The
support rail shall be raised 30 mm from base of box chassis by means of stand-off pillars.

6.4.8 Earthing
S Each transformer shall be provided with 2 (two) off earthing bosses on the outside of each
transformer enclosure for fixed earthing and bonding purposes.

S Dedicated PE bar for termination of the single core earthing cable or cable armours (as
applicable).

S Internal earth cables shall be insulated, coloured green/yellow and have a minimum size
35mm2. The colour combination green and yellow shall be such that on any 15mm length of
the conductor where colour coding is applied, one of these colours at least 30% and not more
than 70% of the surface and the other covering the remainder of that surface.

S Each HV/LV transformer shall be provided with earthing bullets on the HV and LV side for
temporary safety earthing.

6.4.9 Wiring
Wiring of auxiliary equipment on the transformers shall be securely fixed to prevent damage by
vibration, excessive movement and other hazards. The fixing of wiring shall not make rigid any
equipment or connecting boxes which have been specially mounted on resilient fixings.

Cables and wires shall be identified by permanent marking such as ferrules in line with the
relevant wiring diagram.

Internal wiring shall be multi-stranded tinned copper, flame retardant, low smoke and halogen

free. Wiring shall have a cross-sectional area not less than 2.5mm2 for CT and PT’s. Control-
circuit cables shall be not less than 1.0mm2. Wire insulation colours shall comply with IEC doc.
ref. [6].

6.4.10 Neutral Earthing


The neutral point of any star connected windings shall be brought out into the cable
connection box. The neutral system is specified in project transformer datasheet.

6.5 MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT


6.5.1 Cooling System
6.5.1.1 Dry-Type Transformers
• Self-cooling by natural air flow and radiation – AN.
If specified in the datasheet, the transformers shall be provided with adequate design and
capability for future upgrading by installing fans (AN/AF). In such case, all necessary
accessories (supports for fans, cable supports, dedicated temperature sensors, etc.) shall be
provided so that future installation of cooling fans can be carried out after transformer delivery
without major modification.

Where specified, forced air with water cooling (AF/WF) shall be provided.

Air to water heat exchanger shall be of the double tube type and shall be designed according
to the cooling water chemistry and operating conditions specified in project documentation.

Following materials are acceptable:

Sea Water Cooling:


• CuNi 90/10 (velocity < 2.5m/s)
• Super Duplex (≤ 45°C)
• Titanium.

Fresh Water Cooling:


• CuNi 90/10 (velocity < 2.5m/s)
• Stainless Steel.
6.5.1.2 Liquid-immersed transformers
• Self-cooling by natural air flow and radiation – KNAN
• Forced air impelled by fans – KNAF.
6.5.1.3 Cooling Fans
Fans shall be in N+1 configuration and shall be able to operate in both automatic and manual
modes. Motor starters shall be provided by PURCHASER. CONTRACTOR shall provide
thermostatic control to be interfaced with motor starters.

6.5.2 Transformer Assembly


The core, framework, clamping arrangement and general structure of the transformer shall be
of robust design capable of withstanding any shocks during transport, installation and
operation.

Access plates shall be stiffened and internal wiring shall be properly supported.

The transformer installation shall have a bolted / welded configuration.

6.5.3 Dry-Type Transformers Enclosure


The transformer shall be equipped with a ventilated construction, removable enclosure made

of steel sheet. Front and rear covers shall be removable to provide access to a terminal
compartment. Covers shall be fixed by means of bolts. This enclosure shall be fixed to the
transformer frame and equipped with lifting lugs. The transformer assembly shall be mounted
on a base frame.

6.5.4 Liquid-Immersed Transformer Tank


Hermetically sealed transformer tanks shall have flexible corrugated or folded walls and a
completely welded construction. The tank, cover and cooling system assembly shall have the
mechanical strength to withstand without any permanent distortion, the internal pressures
caused by the contraction or expansion of the liquid and gas volumes under the specified
service conditions.

The tank material shall be hot-dip galvanized mild-steel and the radiators material shall be
stainless steel 316L.

The tank shall be mounted on a base frame.

The tank cover shall be designed to prevent the water accumulation.

The tank, cover, valves and all accessories shall be hermetically sealed against air, water and
insulating liquid.

7.5.1 CS – Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) Procedures


Factory acceptance test shall be witnessed at CONTRACTOR’s works, with the transformers
fully assembled.

HV/LV three-phase transformers of 100kVA and above are to be tested in the presence of the
R ABS Surveyor in accordance with ABS doc. ref. [1].

7.5.1.1 Acceptance Tests


The acceptance tests shall be performed by CONTRACTOR in the presence of
PURCHASER’s representative. These tests shall include for each transformer:

• Dimensional checks (terminal, overall dimensions, weight)


• Visual inspection (finish, painting, welds, sheet metal works, lifting lugs, terminal
factoring, leaks and weeping, dehydrator, breather condition)
• Qualitative and quantitative check of the contractual technical documentation provided
with the transformer
• Comparative check of the transformer, auxiliaries and accessories according to the
specification data
• Check of the rating plates and any additional markings and labels required by the
specifications
• Electrical tests: Routine tests shall be performed for each transformer as per IEC doc.
ref. [3]
• Witness of temperature rise test (on 60Hz), lightning impulse test, measurement of
sound level test and electrical type tests on one transformer of each type
• Calibration checks of all instruments
• Functional check of tap changers and accessories
• Protection relay test (if applicable).

7.5.2 CT – Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) Records


In addition to GTS doc. ref. [11], a test report form shall be submitted to PURCHASER which
shall include:

• The design values


• The tolerance values
• The real values as measured, including, if any, the intermediate values causing
provisional refusal.
The reports shall be included in the contractual technical documentation of which they form an
