RESISTENCIA AL CORTE EN EL SUELO.

1. What is the shear strength in terms of effective stress on a plane within a saturated soil
mass at a point where the total normal stress is 295 kN/m2 and the pore water pressure
120 kN/m2 ? The effective stress parameters of the soil for the appropriate stress range are
c’=12 kN/m2 and ϕ’=30°.
2. The results below were obtained at failure in a series of consolidated-undrained triaxial
tests, with pore water pressure measurement, on specimens of a fully saturated clay.
Determine the values of the shear strength parameters c’ and ϕ’. If a specimen of the same
soil were consolidated under an all-round pressure of 250 kN/m2 and the principal stress
difference applied with the all-round pressure change to 350 kN/m2 , what would be the
expected value of principal stress difference at failure?

σ3 (kN/m2 ) 150 300 450 600

σ1 - σ3 (kN/m2 ) 103 202 305 410

u (kN/m2 ) 82 169 252 331

3. An unconfined compression test was conducted on a compacted soil sample 50 mm in

diameter x 100 mm long. The sample is 86% saturated but you can assume it is fully
saturated. The peak axial force recorded was 230 N, and the sample shortened by 2 mm.
(a) Wich failure criterion is appropriate to interpret the test data? (b) Determine the
undrained shear strength. (c) Explain how your results may be affected by the saturation
level of the sample.
