The film Pelé is a story about a young boy from a poor area in Brazil, Edson “Pelé”
Nascimento, who greatly helped in the championship of Brazil in the 1958 World Cup. The film
features various parts in his life: his childhood, his adolescent years, his road to success, and
even a snippet of his father’s athletic career which shortly ended due to a mishap. I have realized
that Pelé’s road to success wasn’t sugar and honey in a bowl. He went on super low-lows and
super high-highs which made me realize that there isn’t any sweet and easy road to success
especially for someone who is so young and who knows so little of the world. However, it also
made me realize that it doesn’t matter if you don’t know everything for as long as you are good
in doing something that makes you incredibly happy and makes the people around you proud.
In undertaking the road to success, there is no one-size-fits-all formula. What might
work for others might not work for you. Therefore, it is very important to focus on the task you
have at hand. It is good to know the strengths and weaknesses of your opponent so you will
know what course of action to take if you are being confronted on a game. However, it is more
important to focus on yourself and believe in your skills and abilities. Constant offense is good
but in order to do this, a team must secure its foundation and asset which is their defense. If you
are not able to secure this, then the opponent will constantly score at your expense. This defense
is sometimes our own selves. We must secure ourselves in the sense that we have to believe that
no matter what the circumstances may be, we can do it and we will do it. Cliché as it might
sound but staying true to our unique selves is the best way to beat our insecurities and win
against our opponents. No matter how good we are, if we constantly follow other people’s paces
then we will never be able to create our own pace which is necessary for the growth of an
individual.
Pelé’s father quoted that “when people say mean things about you, and how you play,
you must never fail.” This made me realize that in doing the things I am willing and/or task to
do, there will always be these people who will drag me down and tell me I cannot do it but I
must always be determined to perform and accomplish the task for it is to my benefit to complete
it. And also, giving my best to a task to complete it will absolutely make me feel better and
through it, I will be able to prove people wrong. I’ve realized that it is really important to keep
in mind that opinions, at the end of the day are just opinions, it is up to the person if he or she
will consider it as a fact and that what others might think and say about me will never determine
my behaviour nor my success but theirs.
