The Book of One Hundred Tales

Demorphic Mimic
I can hear it. As I stand here, upon my room, as my eyes
stare blankly at the doorway in front of me, I can hear it.
It’s here.

They had spoken of an easy job - simple, quick. The

place had been scouted; a broken down, shattered ruin,
old and dusty, where the crumbling masonry had
collapsed inwards into a black, voidless crater of broken
nothingness. It was an ancient laboratory, from a mad
wizard that has read scrollsolder than the flesh that
forms our bodies, tablets of crimson clay inscribed with
languages most scholars dare not speak.

We entered, looking for the treasures, the gold coin and

the silver instruments that were waiting for us within
the depths of that place. It was dark, darker than dark,
and our torches flickered and casted strange shadows
upon shattered walls. I saw it first. I heard the first
scream, as the thing bubbled and oozed through the
darkened corridor until the large crater. I saw myself. It
was me, thrashing like a diseased, corrupted blood clot.
Tentacles of the darkest of crimson hues lept and
crashed around. I swung my sword. I could see my face,
my body, my shape, reflected a thousand times upon the
creature, trashing, silently howling. And then it engulfed
- pain and darkness descended upon my skin, a
thousand daggers ripping my flesh. No sound - only the
gurgle of something distant, and the hissing of acid
upon flesh.

I heard it speak to me while it ate me.

It thanked me. It welcomed me. I was there. Warm pain.

It knew me. It embraced me, like a mother to a child, as
it devoured me, as it ripped me apart. Then darkness
came, the pain subsided, and I found myself laying on
the ground, surrounded by the others. The thing had
escaped, back into the darkness from whence it came.
Leaving me behind.

Six years have passed. I stand here, staring at the

bedroom door. It is here. Not outside, but here. Here in
this darkened room. It is with me. It is me. I feel it
bubbling inside of my innards. I feel its calling. I
shudder knowing that no blood runs through my veins,
but a darkened, blood-red ooze. I still hear its voice,
sometimes. Welcoming. Sweet, and dear. It is me, and I
am it. It won that night.

I hear them. I hear the blood cycling in their veins. My

companions are sleeping in the rooms next to mine…
they do not know. I love them dearly. But … I am so
hungry….”

Demorphic Breed
A Demorphic Clone is a fully grown cloned creature that was devoured by the Demorphic Mimic, fully replaced and
composed of both hellish energy, necrotic flesh and mimic ooze. The creature immediately replaces the creature inside
the Demorphic Mimic (via the Engulf ability). These clones are aware they have been cloned, and retain all memories
from the consumed creature - but their own sense of preservation often leads them to hide this fact.
Demorphic Clones are mysteriously driven to find and attract further people to their sire, both feeding it and allowing
it to multiply further. Clones often become adventurers, attempting to lead others into isolated locales where the initial
Demorphic Mimic is located and in waiting.
The Demorphic Clones follow the following rules:
The Demorphic Clone is a perfect copy of the engulfed and devoured creature, and possesses all the memories,
abilities and spells of the copied creature.
The Demorphic Clone bleeds normally and a Medicine check would reveal nothing (as the entire body is cloned). If
the Demorphic Clone ever fails a Death Saving Throw, it must make a Constitution Saving Throw versus 10 + the
result of the failed Death Saving Throw. On a fail, its body struggles to maintain itself and it begins to slowly
dissolve. It regins its form back once it successfully passes a Death Saving Throw or is brought back to 1 or more
hit points.
Demorphic Clone gain a tendency to evil - usually becoming Lawful Evil or Neutral Evil. If a Demorphic clone has
10 Wisdom score or more, they may choose a different alignment, but never Good - some Demorphic Mimics tend
towards Neutrality, and may even fight against the urge to bring further victims to their sire.

The Dungeon Master may create further limitations towards a cloned creature. If a player is consumed, the
Dungeon Master should engage with the player and verify if the player wishes to continue with the now cloned
character. The Dungeon Master may also allow Charisma-based skills checks from the cloned creature to hide its true
nature.

A Thank You Note
Greetings noble readers! The Demorphic Mimic has
been a collective creation in the first live Twitch stream
of the Book of One Hundred Tales! I’d like to thank
everyone that was present during the stream, for the
amazing ideas shared, and for the fun we all had! I truly
wish to create a community where everyone can come
together and create - I will be looking at creating a
Discord in the future so all of you, noble readers, can
come together and create. I’d like to leave some very
important thanks to some people:
A big thank you to Miguel aka @ifritplays for providing
the streaming setup, for the tips and for just being an
awesome friend!
To my amazing girlfriend Margarida, who was present
and who has greatly helped me with her ideas,
inspiration, her technical expertise - and her patience to
put up with me!
A massive cheers to my players who were present -
lordnelsoncovas and *nionfuneralis and for the tips they
provided, and a big thank you to all of my players who
supported me but could not be present: Eduardo,
Carlos, Isabel, Pedro and Ana.
To Diogo and Mónica, who supported me throughout
the entire time!
To VincentShine, who’s as much of a creator of the
Demorphic Mimic as I am, and who came up with the
name itself (it can still copy statues! We got it!).
To Anexa_Nocturna for the awesome suggestiions, for
the creativity, and for introducing me to a mimic that
can copy street lightning and now I’m scared to go out
at night.
To LoveMurderRose - the Bone Javelin is still the best
ability name ever and it shall not go forgotten! Thank
you!
To Bakateme, keyblade_rush, MotoJpas, publ1c_tv,
and the many other who watched the stream and were a
part of this awesome experience!
I will definitely repeat this action in the future! Thank
you all for being there and for being a part of the
chapters of the Book of One Hundred Tales! You can
find us on Instagram at @thebookofonehundredtales
