21. A body weighing 0.4 kg is whirled in a vertical circle making 2 revolutions per second. If the 2
radius of the circle is 1.2 m ,find the tension in the string, when body is (a) at the bottom of
the circle, (b) at the top of the circle.
22 Satellite A is in a certain circular orbit about a planet, while satellite B is in a larger circular 2
orbit. Which satellite has longer period and greater speed? Justify

the same orbital radius, be the same? Give reason.
(b) What is the time period of simple pendulum inside the satellite?
23. A 400 kg satellite is in a circular orbit of radius 2 RE about the earth. How much energy is 2
required to transfer it to circular orbit of radius 4RE?What are the changes in the kinetic
energy and potential energy?
24. The moment of inertia of two rotating bodies A and B are IA and IB (IA > IB) and their 2
kinetic energies are equal. Which of them has greater angular momentum?
25. Two particles of mass 2 kg and 1 kg are moving along the same line with speeds 2m/s and 2
5m/s respectively. What is the speed of the centre of mass of the system if both the particles
are moving (a) in same direction (b) in opposite direction?

26. Define the term coefficient of limiting friction between two surfaces. A body of mass 10 kg is 3
placed on an inclined surface of angle 300.If the coefficient of limiting friction is 1/√3 find the
force required to just push the body up the inclined surface. The force is being applied
parallel to the inclined surface.
27. Two wire, one of steel and other of aluminum , each 2 m long and of diameter 2.0 mm , are 3
joined end to end to form composite wire of length 4m. What tension in the wire will produce
a total extension of 0.90mm?

(a) The ratio of the areas of cross-section of two rods of different materials is 1:2, and

heat are equal. Determine the ratio of the lengths of the rods.
(b) Show graphically the temperature variation with time associated with a cooling hot
body.
28. (a) A car is moving on road with speed 54km/h .What should be the value of 3
torque if the car is brought to rest in 15 seconds? Radius and moment of wheel about
the axis of rotation are 0.35 m and 3 kgm2 respectively.
(b) we place handles at maximum distance from the hinge in a door. Give reason.
29. If the earth supposed to be a uniform sphere ,contracts slightly so that its radius becomes 3
less by R/n than before, show that the length of the day shortens by 48/n hours.
30. A particle starts rotating from rest and displaces according to the formula 3
𝜃 = (3/20)𝑡 3 –(1/3) t2. Calculate the angular velocity and angular acceleration at the end of
5 sec.

31. (a) What is the phenomenon of capillarity? Derive an expression for the rise of liquid in a 5
capillary tube.
(b) What will happen if the length of the capillary tube is smaller than height to which the
liquid rises? Explain briefly.
OR
(a) A body cools from 600 C to 500C in 10 mins. Find its temperature at the end of the
next 10 minutes if the room temperature is 250C .Assume Newton’s law of cooling..
(b) The spectral energy distribution of the sun is maximum at 4753 A 0.If temperature of
sun is 6050 k, what is the temperature of a star for which this maximum wavelength is
at 9506A0?
32 Define orbital velocity of a satellite and escape velocity. Derive expression for orbital velocity 5
of a satellite .Show that the escape velocity of a body from earth’s surface is √2 times its
velocity in a circular orbit just above earth’s surface.
OR
(a) What is gravitational potential energy at a point? How much work is done in shifting a
mass from the surface to height equal to its radius?
(b) Discuss the variation of acceleration due to gravity with altitude and depth graphically
(single graph)
( c) If a body is taken to a height R/4 from the surface of the earth, find percentage
decrease in the weight of the body?
33. What is meant by banking of roads? Why it is necessary? Obtain an expression for angle of 5
banking of a curved road. On what factors, angle of banking depends? Also draw well
labeled diagram to show the different forces and their components acting on vehicle on a
banked road.
OR
Three blocks of masses m1= 2kg, m2=3 kg and m3=5 kg are suspended with the string
vertically, which is passed over a pulley such that m1 is at top and m2 is at bottom. Calculate
the tension T1,T2 and T3 respectively for masses m1,m2 and m3 ,when the whole system (a) is
moving upward with an acceleration of 2 m/s2 and (b) is held stationary.
SECTION-E
34. Gravitational potential at a point in a gravitational field of a body is equal to the amount of 4
work done in bringing a body of unit mass from infinity to a given point without acceleration.
It is a scalar quantity.
(a) Why is the gravitational potential energy negative?
(b) What is the work done in bringing a body of mass m from infinity to the earth’s surface
of radius R and mass M?
(c) What is the change in gravitational potential energy when body of mass m is raised to
a height nR above earth’s surface of radius R and mass M?

What is the maximum value of gravitational potential energy and where?
35. Three cylindrical rods A ,B and C of equal lengths and diameters are joined in series having 4
thermal conductivities 2 K, K and 0.5 K respectively. In the steady state ,the free ends of
rods A and C are at 1000 C and 00 C respectively.
(a) Determine the temperature of the junction between A and B.
Or
Two rods A and B are of equal length. Each rod has the ends at temperature T 1 and
T2..What is the condition that will ensure equal rates of flow heat through the rods A
and B?
(b) Find the equivalent thermal conductivity of the combination.
(c) Write the S.I unit of thermal conductivity.
