The Elizebathean drama is the union of the Medieval theatre and the Renaissence

interests.
The medieval influences are:
- The idea that the play is an animated sermon
- The scenes represent realistic commedies
- The mix of tragedy and comedy
- The idea of man’s place inside and ordered universe
This medieval heritage was combined with the classical works promoted in the
Renaissence, so the Elizabethean theatre inspirations are also:
- The italian commedia dell’arte
- The work of Niccolò Macchiavelli
- The Latin poet Seneca in the divisions of the play into 5 acts (introduction,
development, turning point, complications and resolving of the difficulties).
In the Elizabethean age the drama became the main form of art; London was the
city of entertainment,
London was the city of entertainment even though public performances were
illegal in the city, so theaters were built in the suburbs
