The CSI Masterformat

CSI or the Construction Specifications Institute is a national non-profit organization that

is dedicated in improving the communication of construction information amidst the continuous
development and transformation of standards and format and also to improve project delivery
processes. The CSI developed the CSI Masterformat that is used to provide synchronicity
between manufacturers and builders. In addition, it is to ensure that the products meet the
building owner’s requirements such as size, weight, material types, time and also the budget.

The CSI Masterformat lists and sections numbers for organizing data about construction
requirements, products and activities. Thus, consists of 16 divisions. These divisions are named
as such:
 General Requirements
According to the Construction Market Data, the General Requirements

In Architecture, the CSI Masterformat is needed for specifying the Building Materials that
are needed in creating a project.

According to Civil Seek, specifications are made to explain the formation, type, building
methodology and strength of the constructional work that cannot be expressed through
drawings. Architectural drawings can represent the constructional work and sizes but these
drawings lack to fulfill the remaining requirements like the quality of the construction material,
the ratio of components used in concrete or mortar, and type of material.

To sum it all up, the CSI Masterformat is indeed a fundamental in Architecture

specifically regarding the Building Materials. It also makes an organized communication
between the material provider and the construction professionals. The CSI Masterformat can
fulfill what Architecture lacks.
