The CSI Masterformat lists and sections numbers for organizing data about construction
requirements, products and activities. Thus, consists of 16 divisions. These divisions are named
as such:
General Requirements
According to the Construction Market Data, the General Requirements
division of the CSI is used as the clearinghouse for items that do not apply
directly to the construction, the cost of which are customarily spread out over the
entire project. Under the General Requirements are these subdivisions:

- Facility Decommissioning
Site Construction
According to Buildipedia, the Site Construction division of the CSI focuses
on site assessments and investigations, demolition of structures, and the
remediation of contaminated soil, buildings and groundwater.
Under the Site Construction are these subdivisions:
- Basic Site Materials and Methods
- Site Remediation
- Site Preparation
- Earthwork
- Tunneling, Boring and Jacking
- Foundation and Load-bearing Elements
- Utility Services
- Drainage and Containment
- Bases, Ballasts, Pavements and Appurtenances
- Site Improvements and Amenities
- Planting
- Site restoration and Rehabilitation
Concrete
The Concrete division of the CSI covers both site placed and precast
concrete. This includes basic concrete materials, admixtures and reinforcing, the
forming, the handling and finishing of the concrete and the maintenance and
repair of concrete. The following are its subdivisions:
- Basic Concrete Materials and Methods
- Concrete Form and Accessories

Masonry
This division describes the process of building with individual units of
natural stone, or with artificial units such as a brick or a block. Masonry
represents one of the oldest form on construction. Its subdivisions are the
following:
- Basic Masonry Materials and Methods
- Masonry Units
- Stone
- Refractories
- Corrosion-Resistant Masonry
- Simulated Masonry
- Masonry Assemblies
- Masonry Restoration and Cleaning
Metals
The Metal Division covers a material that is mostly used in most
construction projects. From the structural steel columns and beams that holds
the skeletal framework to the bent and formed metals used to create roofs, floors
or decorative fabrications and metals that are used in the entire building. Under
this division are the following:
- Basic Metal Materials and Methods
- Structural Metal Framing
- Metal Joists
- Metal Decks
- Cold-formed Metal Framing
- Metal Fabrications
- Hydraulic Fabrications
- Ornamental Metal
- Expansion Control
- Metal Restoration and Cleaning
Specialties
This include the prefinished manufactured items that are usually installed
at or near the end of a project, the finishing touches. Under this are the following:
- Visual Display Boards
- Compartments and Cubicles
- Louvers and Vents
- Grilles and Screens
- Service Walls
- Wall and Corner Guards
- Access Flooring
- Pest Control

- Identification Devices
- Pedestrian Control Devices
- Lockers
- Fire Protection Specialties
- Protective Covers
- Postal Specialties
- Partitions
- Storage Shelving
- Exterior Protection
- Telephone Specialties
- Toilet, Bath, and Laundry Specialties
- Scales
- Wardrobe and Closet Specialties
Equipment
This division includes any all equipment that a building, facility or
residence could possibly needed. These are commonly raised during the design
or construction phase of a project so that the structural and the mechanical
needs of the equipment can be met. The following are its subdivisions:
- Maintenance Equipment
- Security and Vault Equipment
- Teller and Service Equipment
- Ecclesiastical Equipment
- Library Equipment
- Theater and Stage Equipment
- Instrumental Equipment
- Registration Equipment
- Checkroom Equipment
- Mercantile Equipment
- Commercial Laundry and Dry Cleaning Equipment
- Vending Equipment
- Audio-Visual Equipment
- Vehicle Service Equipment

- Industrial and Process Equipment
- Laboratory Equipment
- Planetarium Equipment
- Observatory Equipment
- Office Equipment
- Medical Equipment
- Mortuary Equipment
- Navigation Equipment
- Agricultural Equipment
- Exhibit Equipment
Furnishings
The Furnishings cover a broad group of objects that are installed in
finished spaces and considered to be ornamental. The furnishing have a purpose
of making the building aesthetically pleasing.
The following are its subdivisions:
- Fabrics
- Art
- Manufactured Casework
- Furnishings and Accessories
- Furniture
- Multiple Seating
- Systems Furniture
- Interior Plants and Planters
- Furnishings Restoration and Repair
Special Construction
This division has the purpose of addressing structures that are designed
for a very specific use, such as a greenhouse that require detailed construction
specifications and methods that tailors a unique building function. The following
are its subdivisions:
- Air-Supported Structures
- Building Modules
- Special Purpose Rooms
- Sound, Vibration, and Seismic Control
- Radiation Protection
- Lightning Protection
- Cathodic Protection
- Pre-Engineered Structures
- Swimming Pools
- Aquariums

Conveying Systems
Elevators shall be easy to maintain and service. Maintenance of finish
materials is of particular concern, given the frequent use of most elevators.
Installing shall take place based upon the latest applicable code governing
conveyance system. The following are its subdivisions:

Electrical
The electrical systems in building construction can be grouped under four
major headings. Namely; Power, Lighting, Motor Control Centers and Special
Systems. The following are its subdivisions:
- Basic Electrical Materials and Methods
- Wiring Methods
- Electrical Power
- Transmission and Distribution
- Low-Voltage Distribution
- Lighting
- Communications
- Sound and Video
In Architecture, the CSI Masterformat is needed for specifying the Building Materials that
are needed in creating a project.
According to Civil Seek, specifications are made to explain the formation, type, building
methodology and strength of the constructional work that cannot be expressed through
drawings. Architectural drawings can represent the constructional work and sizes but these
drawings lack to fulfill the remaining requirements like the quality of the construction material,
the ratio of components used in concrete or mortar, and type of material.
