Plane stress analysis using ANSYS APDL

1. Question:

A flat rectangular plate with a hole is shown in the following figure. The dimensions of the
rectangle are a width of 150mm and a height of 80mm, in the middle the circle is a radius of
15mm, thickness of the plate is 12mm. E= 200 GPa and Poisson’s ratio 0.3, there is a load of
20N/mm distributed on the right-hand side of the plate and fixed at the left end. Analyse the
plate for deformation, and stress and also generate a graph for stress variation horizontally from
the hole top point to the top edge of the plate. Find out the stress concentration factor from
these results.

2. Learning objectives:
1. To understand the geometry, develop the relevant FEM model using nodes, elements and

options relevant for solving a plane stress problem.

2. To understand the external loads and supports from the question and convert them into

loads & boundary conditions in FEM

3. To Perform structural analysis and derive results, plot path on graphs using ANSYS APDL

3. Software & Hardware:
ANSYS APDL, V19,

4. Procedure:

Step 1: Click on preferences and select the structural analysis.

Step 2: Add element type on pre-processor.

Step 3: Click on material modelling and select the type of material and enter young
modulus and poison, ratio.

Step 4: Now develop the given figure (Rectangle) by 2 corners using Areas in Modelling
and also provide the circular outline at centre using solid circle option in Circle in Areas.

Step 5: To remove the circular area at centre, in Modelling select Operate then Boolean
then Subtract and select the area to remove.

Step 6: In meshing click on mesh tools and set the Area by selecting the figure.

Step 7: Complete the meshing by clicking the mesh option.

Step 8: Apply the load on members at specific length and direction given in problem.

Step 11: Also apply the pressure on line as given in problem using structural option
present in Loads.

Step 12: Now using counter plot in plot result the deformed shape, von misses stress,
shear stress diagram is obtained.

Step 13: Now to get the graph of stress variation, define the path in form of nodes along
which the graph to be plotted using Path operations in General Postprocessor.

Step 14: Then in Path operations, plot path items click on graph select SEQV and apply
to get to obtain the required graph.
